A Day In The Life

So as most of you probably know, I live in the wild Sierras. And this year, the coyotes are so bold! This morning, Oldest took Coop The Poop outside to … well, he’s not called Coop The Poop for nothing. Anyway, she took Cali, out 80 pound white lab pup. Two seconds later, we hear Oldest screaming and we raced outside.

Four coyotes were in the yard trying to get at Cali. It was terrifying. Cali stood bravely between Oldest and Coop, hair on the back of her neck standing straight up, growling at the coyotes. We called for Cali, but every time she started to come back, the coyotes came toward her. And she knew it too, so she would stop and stand her ground.

Alpha Man, thankfully big and loud, made his presence known and starting toward them, yelling, and his low tone was enough to have the coyotes turn tail. But oh my goodness. Little tiny Coop on his leash would have been a snack on a rope…

To recover, I ate a stack of pancakes. Extra syrup. Extra bacon, crispy. Sometimes this whole misplaced city girl in the mountain isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…

  1. I live in Southern IN and the coyotes are all around this area, even in some populated areas and go after pets all the time. I guess we have taken up too much of their hunting grounds!

  2. Thanks goodness all is okay, we all would have been devastated – damn coyotes. Now I need to eat a stack of pancakes in honor of you and yours this post scared the crap out of me and I wasn’t even there.

  3. OH MY GOSH! I’m so glad it turned out alright. What a brave girl Cali is. I would have eaten lots of chocolate (or cookies, for you) while waiting on the pancakes. Your nerves must have been shot. How scary for Oldest to be standing in the middle of it.

  4. Thank goodness you, Alpha Man, oldest & the dogs are okay. It’s not just by you the coyotes are bad. I live in the city near the Mississippi River and my youngest son has seen a coyote around the road above the river. Too scary!!

  5. Wow Wow Wow … wild big petrifying situation !!!
Glad everyone made out and back into your home safely.
“AlphaMan to the Rescue !!!” thank goodness he was there to chase&scare the coyoteeeees offfff !
You are a brave family living in the wilds … although very beautiful spot in nature landscape .. and I enjoy all the scenic beautiful pics you share with us !
Hugs and glad everyone is safe !

  6. I am so happy Cali was standing her ground against the coyotes. I ma happy oldest screamed to bring help.. I know some neighborhoods in the Metro Detroit, Michigan area are having trouble with coyotes also. News people have been warning pet owners to keep an eye on their pets.

  7. I live on the prairies in southern Saskatchewan and the coyotes here have been seen luring dogs from farmyards.

  8. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ™‰๐Ÿ™Š๐Ÿ™ˆ WOW!!!!!! I think I would have fainted!!!! … then eaten the same as you did!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚

  9. OK – the up side – coyotes will get rid of rodents. And bells and whistles are supposed to deter them. Lights are supposed to deter them. Loud noises – like Alpha Man’s voice are supposed to deter them.

Tell Cali that I admire a heroic girl. And she certainly meets that criteria. She should have joined you with some pancakes and bacon. She deserved it.

  10. OMG! I hope y’all rewarded Cali with as much reward as possible for being so brave and defending her pack!!!! What a brave Alpha she was!!!!!!

Yeah I would have dove into the cookie jar and probably eaten the entire thing!

  11. We recently moved – like 6 weeks ago – to Kalispell, MT. Almost 6 acres, mostly forest. But enough flat around the house we were able to fence a HUGE yard for the dogs. So far our only visitors have been deer, wild turkeys and the dog down the road that liked to ‘borrow’ the kiddies toys before the fence went up. I love it, reminds me of growing up in Burney. So far no Coyotes or other predators…keeping my fingers crossed.

  12. Holy cow, that was close! Perhaps pepper spray should be carried when Coop is outside doing what he does best? (Or, that hornet spray that shoots 20′ in a stream, which would probably be safer since it goes further?) Good for brave Cali for facing down the coyotes & so glad AM was there to lend verbal support – I’d be chowing on sugar of some sort as well. Glad it had a happy ending for all.

  13. So terrifying glad everyone is okay!! And the pancakes with extra everything was just what the Dr ordered!! Alpha man to the rescue!! Hope the rest of your day is less exciting! But maybe this will find a way into your books!! Hugs ๐Ÿค—

  14. OMG! I am so happy that everyone is ok. Poor Oldest. Poor little Coop & Cali was so brave.

    Y’all take care.

  15. Frightening stuff! Very glad all are safe and sound from their adventures in the Sierra wilds. Kudos to Cali for standing her ground, and AM for being scary dude backup!
And hey, sugar helps balance out those fear/anxiety jumps. Otherwise, you would be off-balanced on the jitters side of things. Right? ๐Ÿ™‚
