It Had To Be You

March 4, 2013 | Filed under: Stuff

I’ve showed you a pic of Detective Luke Hanover, right? From the upcoming IT HAD TO BE YOU

Luke

Sigh. He’s pretty darn yummy, isn’t he? How about an excerpt?

Lieutenant Detective Luke Hanover had been away from the San Francisco Police Department for exactly one day of his three week leave and already he’d lost his edge, walking into his grandma’s Lucky Harbor beach house to find a B&E perp standing in the kitchen.

She sure as hell was the prettiest petty thief he’d ever come across, at least from the back since she was wearing nothing but a white lace bra and a tiny scrap of matching white lace panties.

“You have some nerve you… you ratfink bastard,” she snapped into her cell phone, waving her free hand for emphasis, her long, wildly wavy brown hair flying around her head as she moved.

And that wasn’t all that moved. She was a bombshell, all sweet, womanly curves, barely contained in her undies.

“I want you to know,” she went on furiously, still not seeing Luke, “there’s no way in hell I’m accepting your break-up message. You hear me, Teddy? I’m not accepting it because I’m breaking up with you. And while we’re at it, who even does that? Who breaks up with someone by text? I’ll tell you who, Teddy, a real jerk, that’s who– Hello? Dammit!”

Pulling the phone from her ear, she stared at the screen and then punched a few keys before whipping it back up to her ear. “Your voice mail cut me off before I finished,” she said. “You having sex in your office while I was in the building? Totally cliché. But not telling me that you weren’t planning to resign the lease? That’s just rotten to the core, Teddy. And don’t bother calling me back on this. Oh, wait, that’s right, you don’t call – you text!” She punched the “off” button on her phone and tossed it to the counter, hands on hips, steam coming out her ears. Then she thunked her forehead against the refrigerator a few times before going stock still, her head pressed to the cool, steel door.

Had she knocked herself out? Luke wondered.

“It’s just one bad day,” she whispered, still in the perfect position for him to pat her down for weapons.

Not that she was carrying – well, except for that lethal bod.

“Just one really rotten, badass day,” she repeated softly, and Luke had to disagree.

“Not from where I’m standing,” he said.

Want more? Feel free to make my day and preorder at Amazon or BN or iBooks, or wherever floats your boat. It’s coming to stores in May.

Yeah, yeah, I know. That’s still a few months away but look at it like this. It gives me lots of time to show you tantalizing pics of Luke.

Oh and before you go … I’m looking to name a dog in an upcoming book. A precious, precocious mutt. Leave me some of your fave dog names?

What about Boo? Or Athena, or Trixie ?

  2. StephaniaAnn says:

Dog names… Abby, for a girl or butch, for a boy.

  3. Mrs. M says:

Just put in my preorder for my Kindle. Son’s dog is Kyra, one before that was Henry. Friends’s sons’ dogs are Cooper and Sam Adams, also, Riley, Bailey and Finley.

  4. Nicole says:

    Jasper :)

  5. Mia Berg says:

Oh lord I cant wait for this book! I think Lou, Max and Charlie are perfect dog names :)

  6. Rose Welke says:

We named two of our dogs Wheatie after the cereal (champions and all that), Houdini, because one of them was an escape artist and Gypsy.

  7. Liza says:

George was my very first dog’s name. We had a mutt who we named Sneaky because he not only found a way to get out of our fenced in backyard, he was even smart enough to go back in and show another puppy how to get out. Probably the best dog we ever owned.

  8. MaryAnne says:

Love the excerpt. Love pix tooooo.
As for precious precocious doggie names how about: Digger, Pooper, Chewy, Dizzie, Baxter, Curly, Popcorn, Jasper, Scratch, Moxy or Peanut.

    Please send more hot pix…

P.S. Am going for surgery tomorrow a.m. Send happy thoughts my way.

  9. Jeanine says:

I don’t think I have a good idea of what Luke looks like. Please show us more ;-)

As for dog’s names (from my family/friend’s dogs): Mookie, Sundance, Midnight, Petey, Sammy, Nola, Casper, Taco, Ginger

I’ve always liked the name Milo for a dog, if I ever get one on my own.

  10. Gwen R. says:

Yetti for a girl and Cassidy for a boy. Dorie and Cleo are good too(my pugs’ names).

Please feel free to post more pics of what Luke looks like anytime!

  11. Judi Siegelman says:

Since my dog is plaster of paris statue as I am not allowed a real one (nasty husband) and the name is Precious. Because any dog is precious to its owner.

  12. Cindy H says:

We have a Lucy and an Ollie..

  13. Tracy Gilpin says:

Can’t wait to see more of Luke (or for the book to come out). As for dog names, mine were officially Barney’s Black Magic (called Magic) and Scooter’s White Lightening (called Scooter). Most recently, had Taz (Tag’s Tazmanian Devil) and Valkyrie. I also have always liked Heidi (Collie), Parker, Floyd. I’ve always felt that a pet’s name should show some of their personality (Magic was a bit sneaky – now you see, now you don’t; Scooter zipped around like lightening; Taz was a bit devilish, etc.).

  14. Irvana says:

    Love it

  15. Michele says:

When I got my 1/2 cocker 1/2 chihuahua, the lady had named her Honey, because she was the only blond in the litter. I lengthened it to HoneyBun :)
As she has aged, she has acquired some black in her coat. She is 11 years old now, but at 14 pounds, she still looks like a puppy. Especially right after she gets a haircut.

  16. Missy says:

Yummy pic! Bella for a girl ~ Gunner for a boy

  17. Bailey Stewart says:

Male or female? Or you’re not sure yet? Einstein, Cliburn, Rosie, Curie, Brooklyn …. what is the occupation of the owner? That often helps. Dewey …. Bart, Beckett, Mocha, Cosmo, Boo (yes, those last three are real dogs). I give up ….. lol

  18. Jada says:

I’ve already pre ordered and I can’t wait!
My dogs were named at the shelter I adopted them from and I kept them the same. Cooper and Hope. Hope especially because she was in quite a sad state when she arrived and needed all the “hope” she could get.

  19. Josephine says:

    Cole

  20. Danyelle says:

Love the excerpt! As for dog names, my sister has a dog affectionately called Ugly. I have another friend whose dog’s name is D.O.G (pronounced Dee O gee – each letter).

  22. Paulette Wolf Reed says:

One of my brother in laws brought home a puppy and told my sister to think of a name for it while he was at work ( at the time she was pregnant and had 3 other little ones running around) well he came home from work and asked her what name she picked out and she said nothing she didn’t have the time to think about a name soooo that’s how he got the name of Nothing!  :!:

  23. Heather says:

Jasper, Honey, Shadow, Henry, Patches, Morgan

  24. Diane Engelhardt says:

Wow!! Cannot wait. And the name? Cruiser!! ❤❤❤

  29. Samantha says:

    Baxter, Brutus, Samson, & Brusier.

  30. Kathy says:

Just preordered!! Can’t wait! Our favorite dog who lived to be 15 was named Houdini because he was an escape artist. He was so ugly that he was cute- looked like dog in Shaggy Dog series. His mom was an ugly, speckled bird dog; and dad was a huge black poodle. We got him from a friend as a pup and loved him everyday.

  31. Rosemarie N says:

Aww, I wanted to read more. Can’t wait till the next LH books to come out.

  52. Barbara K says:

    Can’t wait for May! 8-)

  62. BC says:

Thanks for the sneak peek. Can’t wait till it comes out. Wonderful inspiration pic too. Sorry can’t help on dog names. I did an acronym for my cat – PUDS – Purrfectly Unique Domestic Shorthair. I don’t think Prepem would work for precious, precocious mutt though.

  63. Susan says:

Already preordered. My 18 year old daughter actually wants to get a lab and name it Cabella, but call her Bella for short. She also named her FFA pigs Tod & Copper (from Disney’s The Fox and the Hound) and another Marie (from The Aristicats). *sigh* Thank God they never grow up. ;-)

  69. Tracey S says:

    Benjamin but Benie for short.

  70. Joanie says:

We have a Butchie and a Max. I wish we would’ve went with Hiccup or Brasco instead of Max but he already knew his name :)

I can’t think of any girl names as we’ve always had boys.

  71. Deanna says:

I love the name “biscuit” or “buttercup” for a super-mas-macho type dog, because there’s gotta be a story behind that, right? Who names their dog “biscuit”? Oh… your three year-old niece, who was visiting you for two weeks when you first adopted the dog… and now the dog won’t answer to anything else…

“buttons” also works well in this case.

  72. Regina says:

    Preordered.

Some friends of ours have a dog named Bailey.

She is always bringing random things home from their neighborhood. They finally setup a sign on their front lawn that said “Sorry, our dog is a thief” along with a shelf of all the things she had brought home.

There were several different balls, gloves, yard tools, and even a walmart sack with unopened package of dishwasher detergent inside.

  73. Candice says:

Cain’t wait for the new book!!

    Puppy names:
Echo, Gizmo, Mr. Beasley, Cornbread Carol, Ugabug, Leba or Nitnee.

  74. Quilt Lady says:

Can’t wait for your book. We had a dog named Mut when we were growing up. Then there is always Brut, Charlie, Sassy for a girl.

  75. Sandy says:

You, have become my favorite author. I love your sence of humor and your taste in these delicous looking men! Keep it coming :!: :!: :!:

  76. Margaret Taylor says:

I had many Chow-Chow’s growing up along with Boxers (raised both breeds as Show Dogs) but my favorite animal name is for my horse, Jared. Jared loved the barn cats and would quite often be found with a litter of them in his stall – being the over protective Uncle that he was! I have a pic somewhere of him on the ground with 8 tiny little kittens asleep over various parts of his body – including two right between his ears!

  77. Sena says:

Coffee is a good dogs name, male or female :)

  78. TJ says:

Syd, short for Sydney. Paladin. Chet. All precious dogs I have had the honor of accompanying through good and bad times.

  79. Glittergirl says:

Thanks for the picture and the tease. I can’t wait for this book ;-)

My favorite dog of all time was my brother-in-law’s blond lab…Harley. He was the most awesome dog, loyal and loving.

  80. Gracie says:

    Preordering!!!!

You need a precious, precious dog’s name?

    Ashes
    Chestnut
    Midnight

  82. Jill Davis says:

    Hollie…and Zeus

  83. Kim Akers says:

My dog’s name was O’Malley, named for Tom Selleck’s character in the movie High Road to China. He was a chesapeake bay retriever and still thought he was a lap dog at 95+ pounds! One of my friends has a standard black poodle named Walter, which I think is absolutely adorable. He even looks like a Walter!

  84. Tammy H says:

My Norwegian Elkhound is named Thor. The. We have Pirate and Pixie.

  85. Marcy says:

Loved the pick and the excerpt.

    How about Cotton or Rascal.

  86. Kelly S says:

Hmm, depends on gender and breed and personality. I had an irish setter named Patty.

My cats are named Zephaniah (Zep or Zeppy) and Sophia (Soph or Sophie).

We had a stray visit us and we stopped him from running on. He looked liked a Max. When the person who had been poorly dog sitting came by and reclaimed him, turns out he was named Max.

So, ask again when you post a description of the dog and then it will be easier to comment on naming options.

  87. Carol O. says:

We had a Samoyed named Misha. (That was a long time ago and I was into Baryshnikov at the time lol!) I also like Dogbert from the Dilbert cartoons.

We currently have just cats. Two Siamese, Ping & Mushu from Disney’s Mulan. We also had a tabby named Mrs. Murphy, from the Rita Mae Brown books.

  88. Dory says:

I can lend you mine: Nemo if a boy, bailey if a girl,

  89. Dory says:

Hi Regina, I laughed at your Bailey comment. I have a Bailey, and yes, she has no concept of propriety. Is it a name thing.? I wonder. She is a lab, maybe is the breed, I know labs r crazy

  90. Melissa Hilles says:

    For a girl-Abigail and for a boy-Emmitt

    And BTW – umm YUMMY

  91. mindy says:

    I’d go for Murphy for a boy-mutt.

  92. Judy F says:

    Daisy, Trixie, Max, Princess, Lucky

  93. Kelly Pink says:

Sassy is a really cute dog’s name!

  94. Lee-Ellen says:

My first dog was a Miniature Schnauzer – cute as a button – did not cut off his ears – name was Wellington. A lot of name for a tiny puppy but he did grow into it!!

Our favorite dog came to us as Sweetie which we just didn’t like and we tried and tried to come up with a new name. One night my son came running out of his room after yelling “Lucy you’ve got some’splainin to do” in a Ricky Ricardo accent. And that was the perfect name for her. She was amazing.

We now have a Chloe. She’s a Belgian Malinois/Catahoula Leopard mix and she is beautiful. She passed puppy school with flying colors and after she got her diploma, forgot most of it. Just like a kid!!!!

  95. Karen says:

My first dog was a faithful mutt named Dusty. I now have a purebred Daschund named Shiloh that is my faithful companion.

  96. Aimee says:

I have two golden doodles who are super mischievous, but always make you smile. My oldest one even ate a pair of underwear as a pup. Their names are Cody & Baxter (yes, my husband named the younger one after the dog in Anchorman).

  97. Sherry L. says:

Chief for a boy or lucy for a girl

  98. g_lavo says:

Our beloved oldest dog is named Poopy (like at the vet they call out “Poopy Gonzalez”). The name was derived from calling him puppy using baby-speak which somehow morphed into Poopy. It’s not the most dignified name but somehow it fits him perfectly.

  99. robin says:

I have had a Trixie, Chester, Rusty,Buttons, and Murphy. Or, Smokey or Max?

  100. Debbie says:

Thanks for the hot pic and the tease. Can’t wait!!!

;-)

  103. Linda says:

We have a Jasper in our family who fits that description. He’s a mix of Corgi, Basset and Irish Wolfhound.

  104. Kathy Rando Giannone says:

My beloved German Shepherd was Sassy. We often called her Sassy Girl & Sass. My sister insisted her name was Sweet & Sassy Girl. We now have a German Shepherd Sharpei mix, but she looks like a German Shepherd with red hair where the tan should be, hence… Chili. Her nicknames are Chili Dog, Chilita, Chillins, Chill, Chibby, Chibbins, Grammy’s Girl, Grammy’s Puppy, Miss Chili. Dogs I had growing up & other family dogs: Snooper (black Lab), Buttons (German Shepherd/Collie mix), Tinkerbell (GS/Collie mix), Sabby (GS/Collie mix, looking like collie w/GS coloring), Dodie (mix), Rusty (Golden Retriever), Missy (beagle), Buster (beagle), Rex (GS), Russell (Golden Retriever) & Felicia (Samoyed).

  108. Sheilah Lee says:

Can’t wait for the new book. Any previews of the book or Luke ;-) would be lovely. As for dogs names well I’ve always like Tyrone, Marshall, Gordo, Hamlet and Phydoux (yep that would be pronounced Fido) and for a girl Tessa, Marmalade, Bessa and Alice.

  109. Tiffany S. says:

My friend’s lab mix is named Waffles, he’s pretty darn cute. My other friend has a bagel eating dog named Gracie; she’s pretty darn cute too.

  115. Lynne G says:

I adopted a lab mix from a local lab rescue called CILRA. The black kind of lab…only had 3 legs. He was hit on the freeway and lost one of his front legs. He was called Freeway…and I just couldn’t change his name. But, several of my friends called him Tri-pod or Tri for short. He was a great dog and faster at times than my four legged lab Samantha.

  117. Jill C. says:

    Our previous dog names:

Our family’s current canine chaos makers include a pup(and I use the term loosely ) English Bulldog named Tater tot. He’s a 40 pound bag of potatoes with the IQ of a spud. Our other dog is Dizzy. He looks like the skanky love child of Benjii and Toto, okay, maybe their gay love child. ;-)

  126. Virginia says:

Dog name – Mooch. Job description and personality in one.
