Jill’s Crazy World

April 23, 2012 | Filed under: Stuff

So around 8 a.m on Sunday morning, I was jerked out of deep sleep by a huge BOOM. I looked around, confused as the boom was followed by a weird rolling sensation. It felt like an earthquake. But … not quite. Alpha Man had left a half an hour before for his daily swim. I’d gotten out of the early exercise by telling him I was going to go for a hike with the dogs.

I totally lied. Unless you count dreaming about a hike…

Anyway, the boom. Youngest hadn’t even rolled over. But the dogs … the dogs were worked up, whining and frenetic to get outside. I shoved my feet into my Sorrels, which are big old winter boots for those of you who don’t live in the Arctic. Yes, I made quite a vision in my pj’s (tank and bootie shorts) and winter boots. I walked all the way around the house, thinking that what I’d heard was a tree falling and hitting the roof.

No tree.

Confused (not a new state for me), I went back to bed with my laptop to work. I checked the US Geological Survey. No seismic activity, so it hadn’t been an earthquake. And that’s when the news reports started rolling in. Rumor was that the Sierras had been hit by a meteor shower.

A meteor shower.

Only in Jill’s world, right? But no authority or agency stepped forward to confirm or deny. So I’m left with no choice but to decide that it’s an alien invasion cover up …

They mentioned a meteor shower last night on the news, but nothing about being attacked. I think it’s aliens too!!! You in your get-up and me in my aluminum foil hat would make quite a sight for the front page of the newspapers

  2. Jen C says:

Not quite as dramatic as your experience, but it’s 56 degrees here in North Central Florida and the newspaper said that tonight/early tomorrow morning it’ll be in the 40s and maybe even dip into the 30s! Things are crazy all over, it seems.

  3. Jennifer Hardin says:

don’t worry if it is aliens the Doctor will be there. I just wish it was David Tennent instead of Matt Smith :) I’d get in the TARDIS with David any day :)

  4. Donna M says:

Yahoo has a report on that. I’m sure there will be something on the news when it is on at 11:30 am. I didn’t hear anything that I can recall & I was up then.

I also saw/read on Yahoo “15 Things Men Wish women Knew”. Check it out! The comments below the article made me laugh out loud!!!

I think you are safe from the Aliens for now.

  5. catslady says:

It’s been confirmed that it was a meteor. Not as much fun as aliens but then I just watched War of the Worlds so that’s a good thing lol. After hearing so many of your stories, Jill, it’s a wonder it didn’t hit your house lol.

  6. Judy F says:

wow. Maybe you can use that as an excuse to be late on your book

  7. ev says:

It’s part of the meteor shower that is normal this time of year, however, this one was way behind, hit the atmosphere during the daytime (it was visible, and they have some great pictures of it). The boom was when it hit the atmosphere and exploded.

We never have any fun stuff on this coast. Just snow in April (not here tho).

  8. Tracy S says:

It’s really sad that I know what Sorrels are  I live in WI and went to college in Northern MN.

I don’t like noises without explanations!!

  9. Kelly W. says:

Aw, you’re right, hardly anyone commented. I was going to this morning. It would’ve read something like, “They’re coming to take me away…” or “Take me, ta-ta-take me, wanna be a victim, ready for abduction.” Lol. Sorry, I had to. Maybe a thought that runs through your head a time or two when the teens are on your last nerve? Did you ever find out exactly what it was?

  10. Allie says:

I just was reading about how they said the meteor that exploded over your mountains was the size of a MINI VAN. WOW!!!

    From Spaceweather.com:
SIERRA FIREBALL DECODED: On Sunday morning, April 22nd, just as the Lyrid meteor shower was dying down, a spectacular fireball exploded over California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. The loud explosion rattled homes from central California to Reno, Nevada, and beyond. According to Bill Cooke, head of NASA’s Meteoroid Envronment Office, the source of the blast was a meteoroid about the size of a minivan.

  11. Lynda the Guppy says:

Hey, I responded via Twitter, does that count? LOL

    See? You weren’t crazy.

  12. Karen B says:

Wow….I think I would be a little freaked out. Here in Queensland, Australia we don’t seem to get any earth shaking experiences (touch wood)…just lots of flooding in recent times. I watched the movie “Beaconsfield” on TV on Sunday night about the two miners in Tasmania rescued after an underground tremor caused collapse of rock that kept them captive for 2 weeks….after watching that if I felt the earth move I think I would be hysterical.

  13. Rosie says:

I really, really want a pair of Sorrels, but because I have bad feet, I am always wary of new-to-me brands of shoes.

Aliens could be cool. However, I actually work on invasive species, so I am especially paranoid of alien organisms from an ecological, rather than military, security perspective. As long as no one got hurt, though, meteors sound like great fun! Aren’t you supposed to get some sort of warning form NASA, though, so that you’ll know to go outside and watch? (Yes, I come from severe-weather-watching/chasing country.)

  14. Jeanine says:

This was in te news last night, I think they said the meteor landed in Nevada?

  15. Lynn LaFleur says:

You live in a fascinating world, Jill.
