Mother Nature on the crackpipe again

March 22, 2011 | Filed under: Stuff

Five feet in the past two days.

Out every window, the view is starting to look the same.

I know it looks like this window must be right on the ground but it’s not …

The view out the front door, which used to be grass. Oh, spring. Where for art thou?

And oh look! It’s a sighting of Alpha Man, who has been out moving snow for nearly two straight weeks now. I almost forgot what he looked like.

We’ve lived here ten years and we’ve never seen anything like this winter. My calendar said that yesterday was the first day of spring but someone forgot to mention that to Mother Nature.

What’s your favorite season? Right now mine is summer, thank you very much.

  1. Babs says:

Wow, that is just wrong. WRONG!

I love autumn…the cooler temperatures, crisp air, changing leaves, etc. Love it all.

  2. Tura Lura says:

 WOW. And, um, yuck. It seems to be spring here, but I fully expect a random mid-April snowstorm. Those always seem to occur when spring starts ‘on time’.

Autumn is my favorite season for the very reasons Babs gave. Which is why my husband and I had an outside wedding in mid-October. ^_^

  3. Judy F says:

Oh man that is a lot of snow. Yikes.

My favorite season is fall. Just love the crisp air and the leaves turning

  4. Stacy ~ says:

Spring! Warm temps, the pretty flowers (lilacs) and all coming back to life.

  5. Marty says:

Holy cow, Jill! I love me up some snow, but enough is definitely enough. I love both the transition seasons. Spring and Fall have so much energy, change in the air, they’re both visually stunning. Of course, 5 feet of snow is also visually stunning, but I’m thinking you’ve been stunned enough at this point.

  6. Emily says:

For me, it depends what area of the country I’m in. I LOVE summers and autumns in New England. However, now I live in Arizona- and I HATE the summers here.

That said, any season that doesn’t aggravate my allergies is a good one. :D

  7. Amy M says:

Well, I love all of them. I love the snow, and have to admit I am a tiny bit jealous. I could never live where I didn’t have all of the seasons! But, that is a lot of snow for poor Alpha Man to try to dig out of! Maybe Mother Nature will figure her business out soon and get you on the track to spring!

Right now I am not loving the weather. The rainy, muddy yuck outside…that I could do without. The kids come in looking like pigs. They kick off their boots, which causes mud to fly everywhere. Course not one of them did it! Then our little 5lb white dog of fluff doesn’t understand why he can’t go out to roll with said children in the mud!

  8. tennismom mary g says:

OMG too much! We’re supposed to get 2 inches tomorrow & I’m sure there’ll be city-wide panic.

Summer for sure: no socks, just slip into sandals.
Endless watermelon and great stuff from the garden.

  9. Liza says:

I love the temps of Spring and Fall in TN. However, my allergies don’t really like all the blooming trees, flowers, and grasses.

So sorry about all the snow. We actually had several pretty big snows(for TN) this year and I thought I would go crazy from the white stuff.

  10. ev says:

I love all the seasons and would be lost without them from hot to cold.

But I’m so glad the snow is mostly gone, including the dusting we got yesterday. I am tired of shoveling and blowing.

And my daffodils are ready to open.

  11. trishc says:

Just Crazy!! At least Alpha Man is outside not driving you crazy!!! He must be in great shape after this winter.

Sorry, but I’m so glad it’s not me! I will pray for a quick melt.

  12. Connie Lee says:

I love SPRING. Everything is fresh and new again. Flowers and bushes and trees are blooming. Here in N.C., it is a perfect day, suppose to get to around 80 degrees. So sorry Jill, I wish I could send you some of this beautiful weather.

  13. Nicole S says:

After seeing that I’m not going to complain about how cold it is here, at least I don’t have all that snow.

My favorite season is spring, I love watching everything bloom. It’s a beautiful season.

  14. Samantha says:

Oh Jill I am so sorry you have to deal with that. I have an extra room down here in Tampa, Fl if you’d like to get away. I’m not that far from the beaches. It’s in the low 80s this week, I’m sure you’d love it. You could even bring Frat boy. My favorite is Fall. We don’t get a big change of seasons here in FL but you can start to feel the crispness in the air when it starts getting cooler in November.

  15. Allie says:

Wow. That’s incredible. This year, we’ve had the Year of Rain where I live.

Summer is my favorite. I’ll take mine hot and dry, please!

  16. ms bookjunkie says:

I hesitate to admit, but I actually like winter. Spring is sneezing season (pollen allergy), during the summer the sun never sets (seriously, it’s enough to make me contemplate a move to a civilized country where nights are dark!), autumn is dark, gloomy and wet… So yes, I like winter. I get to do the whole hibernation thing and no one tells me I should go outside to enjoy the weather. :)

  17. Donna M says:

The pictures are beautiful but that is more snow than I can even imagine! Spring made an early appearance here in February but then winter came back with lots of rain! I’m ready for some sun & no rain falling!! Even just a day or two would be nice. The weather report is not looking like that is going to happen this week.

My favortie season is fall, love the color, love the cooler weather. I’m not a lover of summer as I don’t like the heat.

  18. Marsha says:

Summer! Nice hot weather here in Oklahoma and some excellent baseball in Texas! Nothing better!

  19. D says:

hmmmm. I just don’t know what to say. That is definitely waaaaaay toooo much snow!!!!! My fav season is summer. The sun is warm the skies are blue, the kids to bet up before the sun to get off to school. I live in as little clothing as possible and still be respectable, the only thing I wear on my feet are flip flops!!! Ahh, can’t wait!!!!

  20. Susan says:

I’m a complete summer girl. Love to camp, run around barefoot and sit outside and read.

  21. Lyn says:

My favourite season is summer, mainly because it doesn’t rain that often and the weather stays good.
Between autumn and winter I get sick of rain and wind very quickly.
If it makes you feel any better, my winter jacket is due for replacement and we’ve had episodes of heavy rain here since the beginning of March, but the jackets won’t be in stores until at least the beginning of April.

I’ve never lived anywhere that it snowed, so usually I love seeing the pics of your surrounding with snow, but five feet in two days is just a bit overboard.

  22. Maggie says:

Oooooh Jill, I am so sorry you are so snowed in. I feel your pain. You must have the patience of a Saint that is slowing disappearing quickly! My favorite is Summer, however, in Texas it can be a killer!!!! Spring will hit you soon, I hope. ;-)

  23. Auntie J says:

Somebody needs to explain your, uh, global warming to Al Gore, I think.

  24. Jana says:

Alpha Man should be given a medal for all the work he’s been doing. Or a banquet with a huge statue or something to mark his manly heroic feats of the past winter.

OH…maybe you could put him in one of your books? Daring dashing Ranger, on a rescue mission during a blizzard!!!

Or would that make him insufferable to live with?

  25. Jennifer says:

Well, we haven’t gotten that much, but if the six inches of snow on my step are anything to go by, spring has yet to arrive here as well (and just in time for calving season…oy)

My favourite time is spring, pre-mosquito and post-puddles.

  26. JenM says:

Hi Jill – I gather you are in Truckee or one of the lake communities. I’m down in Oakland, and I’m sorry to tell you that there’s a lot more headed your way. It is pouring down here and has been since about 3 AM.

  27. Lindsay says:

I know it’s supposed to be spring, but I’m a firm believer that if you have to shovel snow or scrape your car windows then it’s not spring yet. I can handle cold weather in the spring and any rain that comes our way, but once the calendar says spring I don’t want anymore snow or ice.

My favorite season has always been spring, but this year it seems like we have no spring…just an extended winter. We’ll probably jump from winter to to summer, skipping spring altogether.

Jill, I love your newsletter. I always look forward to reading about the latest news and upcoming books.

  28. Nichelle says:

    Spring and summr

  29. angela moore says:

I live in Texas+its warm a lot. My favorite time is when its warm enough to sit outside without melting. When the temperatures are still in the low eighties like they are right now.
