Puppy Tales

April 5, 2010 | Filed under: Stuff

So Jake the frat boy doesn’t like to go to bed. We have tried letting him sleep with us (big mistake), and we have tried crating him (bigger mistake), The pup doesn’t like to sleep. We say please and he says no, thank you.

So we put him in the garage thinking there he could wander and play and have a good old time if he wanted, and we wouldn’t care.

Best laid plans …

In the garage next to my car is a huge shelving unit filled with our shoes. Now remember we have five people living here, which is a lot of shoes. There’s basketball shoes, dress shoes, sandals, ski boots, regular boots … Those shelves are crammed full.

Until we started sleeping Jake The Frat Boy in the garage. Seems Jake has a little bit of a shoe fettish. The first morning that we came downstairs to get the dogs up, we found the shelves rearranged. The entire bottom shelf, which had been all boots, was mysteriously empty.

So we walked over to the dog beds wondering what the heck, and found this.

Now this is a huge two car garage, and the bed is on the far side away from the shelves. In between are two cars and various other crap. So basically, this little adventure had to take him all damn night. Then there’s the fact that most of these boots are bigger and heavier than he is.

The best part — he hadn’t chewed a single one. Yet there was no place for him to sleep, and he didn’t appear to care. He just wanted his people’s stinky things surrounding him. And seriously, how are we supposed to get mad at this face? It’s impossible, I’m telling you …

  1. Cait says:

I do believe he needs a cozy blanket with your families’ scents on it. And a “go to bed” command, lol. If only. I’m so glad my dog is beyond that stage. He used to jump the barriers we put up to keep him in the kitchen at night. There was no keeping him away from us, though we feared for the state of our carpets.

  2. Judy F says:

Ah what a cutie. He just wanted his family with him. I am happy he didn’t chew them up.

  3. Stacy~ says:

Aw, so cute! I couldn’t be mad at him either. He misses you guys.

  4. Jennifer M says:

Aw, that puppy face! He is so cute I would probably hand him over anything he wanted!

  5. Caroline says:

 I have a rescue dog called Molly and she does exactly the same thing. Every time we go out she takes shoes to her bed. Like Jake she doesn’t chew them – and I think it is a comfort thing. And like you said how can you be mad at them when they are sooooo cute! Caroline x

  6. ayleen says:

OMG, those eyes just kill me….he’s so cute….

  7. JoAnn Ross says:

Oh, what a sweet puppy!! How can we get mad at our dogs, who love us unconditionally? Seems we owe them the same, especially those with tough starts.

Our latest rescued doggie does the same thing. She also gathers up all the dog toys, takes them to her blanket (they won’t ALL fit in her bed) and hoards them. Drives her brothers — also rescues — nuts!

  8. Jess says:

finally a boy who understands shoes!

  9. Ashley says:

That is too cute. I’m shocked but happy for you that he didn’t chew them.

  10. Laura K Curtis says:

Oh, what a cutie!! My dogs like to put their toys in my shoes to chew on them (the toys, not the shoes). Our youngest dog has one of those “too cute to punish” faces…unfortunately, I think she knows it!

  11. Liza says:

No way I could stay mad at that cute face. He just wanted to be around his people, or at least their shoes. So sweet!

  12. Lori says:

Oh my gosh. That face! What a sweetheart. I agree with everyone else – he wanted the comfort of your scent.

  13. D says:

Awww, what a face!!! Mine is 9 and still does this. It’s hard to stay upset when they don’t damage anything and look at you with those big trusting eyes. Just think of all the adventures Jake is going to give your family. ;-)

  14. Brandy says:

Good golly! He’s adorable! He just wanted y’all around him, I guess.

  15. Allie says:

    What a cutie. :)

I recommend Amelia Kinkade’s book The Language of Miracles – then perhaps you could persuade him to just sleep on your t-shirt or something, next to the bed, instead of rearranging all your shoes. LOL That is a LOT of shoes to put away. LOL

  16. limecello says:

Awwweee that is *too cute!* Jake just wanted to be surrounded by all of your scents! … Foot… boot smell… :P Well he’s a dog. Haha – maybe his night time adventures will wear him out.

  17. Kate Hardy says:

    Oh, bless! He’s irresistible.

We used to get the whole lot like that with ours – now he’s older, he likes just one shoe from each person in the house, and that keeps him happy. It does get better

  18. catslady says:

That is one of the most adorable things I’ve ever seen lol. I read at a dog site that they should be in the bedroom with you because you (or hubby) is the leader of the pack and packs sleep together!

  19. Donna M says:

That face! It is so hard to punish when you look at that face. Reminds me of some of the things my youngest did & then she would smile & said she “lubbed” me! What can you do!!

I think like others mentioned I would try putting a couple of old shirts that you had on so he has your scent. By the way, how nice that he did not chew any of them.

  20. Deb says:

Are you for real telling us you keep shoes in the garage? Where there are SPIDERS? You at least make the Man stick his hand in them to see if it’s safe, right?

  21. Georganna says:

Too cute! Makes me miss our dog who has been gone for almost a year now. I’m beginning to get the urge to get a new puppy soon.

They gave you an A of course!!!

  22. mindy says:

Oh Jill! He’s so damn cute!

My dog likes to stick his nose in my running shoe or clog and fall asleep. He doesn’t chew them (he chews everyone else’s though), he just sleeps with mine….

  23. trish says:

I’m reading Instant Temptation. Slowly… because I don’t want it to end! Whew it is hot! Great story so far.

  24. ms bookjunkie says:

Aww… Such a cute shoe thief!

BTW, Instant Temptation arrived while I was away for Easter. Yay!

  25. tennismom mary g says:

    Hi Jill
You have way more willpower than I do. I couldn’t resist snuggling with Frat Boy. If you look up “puppy dog eyes” in the dictionary, I bet his picture is there.

    LOLOL – Jess says:
finally a boy who understands shoes!

  26. Stacy S says:

    That’s too cute!

  27. Jaye Patrick says:

Yeah, the t-shirt is the way to go. I used a t-shirt my pup’s mother had snuggled into as part of the bedding; never had any trouble with shoes.

As for the ‘bed time’ command: I looked after a cat (Phormio), a Great Dane (Cleo) and a Corgi (Pan). At a dinner party that lingered on, it was time for the pets to go to bed. I gave the command – “Bed, Phormio!” And the cat sniffed and wandered off. “Bed, Cleo!” The Great Dane hurried outside to her kennel. “Bed, Pan!” and everyone paused then erupted in laughter.

Two morals to the story: Be careful what you name your pets and be more careful about commands…

  28. Celise says:

    I. Love. The. Name. Jake the Frat Boy. Hah! Love. It. And he’s too cute for words.

  29. Bailey Singh says:

in our local pet shop there are lots of dog beds that are made in china. i don’t know if they are of good quality.`–
