So I was very busy plotting out my next novel, which involves a lot of lying on the deck with my eyes closed, the sun gently warming me, the scent of spring drifting over me . . . seriously, this plotting is hard work . . . when I hear squeals from the kids.
Squeals, for those of you without kids, means there is trouble brewing. The louder the squeals, the more trouble they’re likely in. It’s a direct ratio thing.
Anyway, I get up from all that hard plotting and find them squatting in front of a patch of wild flowers in the woods.
“Whatcha doing?” I asked.
“Watching ladybugs have sex,” answered Youngest.
Picture me swallowing my own tongue. “Um—“
“Look, Mom.”

Yep. That’s two ladybugs doing their thang, teaching my kids the facts of life. Turns out you don’t need TV to warp a kid’s mind, you just need a warm, spring day . . .

How in the world did you manage to get that picture? You’re stealth.

Nancy, if I’m stealth, it’s a geriatric sort of stealth.
Actually it was sheer luck. Those ladybugs were very very busy and not paying attention.

This photo reminds me of the time I took my nephew to the zoo (he was around 3 years old) and the Lion was going after the Tiger. And of course when we got home he proceeded to tell my sister and brother-in-law it was the best time ever because he seen the Lion jumping on the Tiger. Needles to say I had some explaining to do!

And, here I thought it was so nice of those ladybugs to assist you with your inspiration.

How funny! Reminds me of the time that we took a group of kids to the local zoo and saw two turtles mating. When one of the kids walked up and said, “Look at those two turtles playing leap frog but they sure are making funny noises.” We just nodded and moved them along to the next exhibit.

You could have been at at ranch. You don’t even need to get that close.
