Whatcha reading?

March 26, 2010 | Filed under: Stuff

Not too long ago a friend gave me one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. A Sony ereader. At the time I had been going through a dry reading spell, nothing was pleasing me and I would restlessly shift from book to book in my towering TBR pile.

And then (cue the gospel choir) along came the ereader.

Life will never be the same.

No longer do I have five books in my car and another five in my purse and another five scattered across the couch because I never know what I’ll feel like reading. They’re all in one single place, in one cute little brown leather case.

It’s really ever so pretty. We’re in love, actually, me and my ereader. I twittered earlier in the week that I’d marry it and have its babies if I could. Except with four teenagers in the house, sometimes five, and two dogs and a cat and a husband, I really really REALLY don’t need any more babies ever.

Ahem. Back to the ereader. In the past few weeks, I’ve read Victoria Dahl, Julie James, Pamela Clare, JD Robb … and have loved everything. I’m so happy with my new lover, the sexy Sony ereader.

So. Tell me about you. Are you reading paper books, or with an ereader, and if so, what kind? And also, what have you been reading? Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh and a big p.s. — I was nominated for a RITA for INSTANT ATTRACTION. Both very exciting and bittersweet, as Kate Duffy, my editor, would have loved this. But I suspect she’s up in heaven on a comfy couch with her own ereader, smiling down on me.

OMG OMG OMG! I know how you feel. I received a Kindle for Xmas and have totally drunk of the Kindle-ade. My husband thinks I am forming an unhealthy attachment to it but since he’s the one who gave it to me…

I’ve been reading you (SLOW HEAT), Julie James, Laura Kinsale, Lauren Dane, Tim Dorsey, Louise Welsh, Neil Gaiman, Julie Harper, Michelle Willingham, Lindsey Davis…I’m all over the map and it is easy to be this way because I can carry around all those different books and genres in one convenient package. Pre-ordered and waiting for delivery to Bob (my Kindle) next week: INSTANT TEMPTATION.

    *squeee*

  2. Laure says:

Congratulations on the RITA nomination! It’s well deserved.

I got a Kindle for Christmas and we’re in sort of a love-hate relationship. I love the ease of carrying a large number of books with me. But reading off a screen is something I have to get used to doing. I love the feel of a book in my hand, and the Kindle isn’t the same. So I read both paper and ebooks.

I’m reading Jo Leigh’s latest on the Kindle, just finished Dragonfly in Amber on paper, and hoping to eventually finish off Parke Godwin’s Lord of Sunset which is lovely but interminable at times.

I must go order Instant Gratification, which somehow I haven’t read yet. That excerpt got to me. :)

  3. Jeanne C says:

I just finished reading Instant Temptation. Now I am suffering from Instant Withdrawal. Are you sure there isn’t a 1/2 sibling they don’t know about? Loved the book. As to my method of reading, I am hanging on to my paperbacks for now. I spend my entire work day on a computer so holding and reading from the actual book is a nice change. Oh, and CONGRATS on the RITA nomination.

  4. Judy F says:

Congrats on the Rita Nom. You deserve it. Make them treat you like a Queen.

I don’t have a kindle, i really like having a book in my hand.

I am reading HelenKay Dimon’s Leave Me Breathless. Very good so far.

Before that Shiloh Walkers Broken. Excellent book

  5. Kate Hardy says:

    Congrats on the nom, Jill!

  6. Stacy~ says:

I am old-fashioned and still want that book in my hand.

Congrats on the Rita, Jill! Oustanding news and not one bit surprising :)

I finished Instant Temptation (so good!) and am currently reading a YA romance called Sing Me To Sleep by Angela Morrison. YA seems to be my new genre crush.

  7. Caroline says:

Huge congrats on the RITA nomination. Fingers crossed! Caroline x

  8. Jennifer M says:

    Congrats on the RITA!
I’m still reading from an actual book. As far as what I’m reading now I haven’t started anything because I’m anxiously awaiting my delivery of Instant Temptation! (It should come today, yeah!)

  9. Stephanie P says:

    Congats on the RITA.
I’m am still reading paperback and hardcover. But i am asking for an ereader for christmas next year. But, that is suh a long time away. I’ll get it before then. ;-)

  10. Pat L. says:

Congrats on the Rita – I heard.

I just finished Instant Attraction and Slow Heat – Loved them. You probably wouldnt like them tho’ – LOL.

Have read a lot of other good books lately; am going to start Kristan Higgans’ The Next Best Thing.

Also read recently and loved: Christie Craig – Divorced Desparate and Deceived, Julie James – Something About You, Mary Marguerite Daughteridge – Sealed with a Ring, Carly Phillips – Body Heat, Louisa Edwards – Cant Stand the Heat.

  11. MJ says:

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I read mainly on my iPhone because I can adjust the font. I recently read Trish Milburn’s The Family Man, then decided to try some urban fantasy, but I think it’s not for me. So now I’m reading some of the Harlequin Undone stories.

  12. Shannon says:

Right now I’m reading Karen Robard’s new book, Shattered. I haven’t read much of it yet, but I like it so far!!

  13. Dru says:

    Congratulations Jill!!

I have the nook and I love it. Right now I use it as my virtual bookshelf – instead of buying the latest in a series in paperback, I buy for the nook. I’m still reading my book; I love the feel of holding and turning pages; but I also alternate my reading with a book from the nook.

  14. Chris says:

    Congrats on the RITA nomination!

I’ve had an ereader for a year now. I actually read very few paper books these days – the reader ROCKS.

  15. Kara says:

Super congrats on the nomination!!! I am reading that book right now!!!

As far as ereaders go…I have been wanting one for sometime now…I hope this is the year that I finally get one. I am so torn between three of them…Kindle, Sony, and Nook. However, so many of my eBooks are for the eReader software that it looks like the best one for me would be the Nook as that device supports that format. Right now I read my eBooks on my laptop and Palm PDA.

  16. Cathie Kodet says:

I love my eReader too. I have a Kindle and it is my best friend. We are heading to Mexico tomorrow for a well deserved vacation (having survived chemotherapy for breast cancer) and I have my Kindle on the top of my packing list. Before I used to have to bring an entire suitcase full of just books, but now I just bring my Kindle. I have 40 books on it to read while I am lounging by the pool.

  17. Jamie says:

Congratulations on the RITA nomination!!! That’s awesome!

I just downloaded the Kindle app for Mac, and on a recommendation at a conference last weekend, I’m reading Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely on my computer. It’s awesome. I even sort of dreamed about it last night. Great book. (And using the kindle app is making me want an e-reader.)

  18. Andrea says:

    Congrats on the RITA!

As for the electronic readers….while I get the concept and think it is a great idea…for me reading is almost as much about aquiring the books as reading them. The wonderful smell of a library or B&N. Peacefully walking the aisles, seeing catchy covers that make me pick up the book. The awesome smell of a new book and the crack of a new binding being opened. I just love it. A lot of really good books i have read, I have picked up because a cover interested me, or a was ambling through a second hand bookstore and stumbled on it…..not sure that would happen if I was looking at them electronically…

  19. Liza says:

    Congrats on the RITA nomination!!!

I have a Sony ereader and really love it. However, I still love the feel of a “real” book in my hand too, so I go back and forth between the two. I do love to travel with my Sony since I can carry so many books in such a small amount of space.

  20. tennismom says:

Congrats on the RITA nom. Great news !! LOL
I would love to get an ereader. I’ve put it off because I live in Canada & I’m not sure what’s best for me. I know a lot of the people have the Sony. I want something that will accepst all publishers without fiddling around as I’m not tech savvy.

    Just finished:
Naked Edge – Pamela Clare – magical
Something About You – Julie James sexy funny smart

    Reading:
No Chance – Christy Reece just brilliant in every way.

    Next:
    Second Chance – Christy Reece
Been checking Chapters every day in case they get Instant Temptation in early.

  21. Melissa, in New Orleans says:

I LOVE my Kindle! I am on a business trip for a week, and I don’t even want to think of the book issues that would have caused me in the past. I am reading Wild Ride by Jenny Crusie and Bob Mayer. Amazon says they won’t bring me your book until 4/1  I understand the reluctance to move to the ereader. I was the same way, but I just ran out of space. Now there are certain authors I buy in actual book form, and everything else goes on the Kindle. I get a little of both worlds!

  22. Katie says:

I do a hybrid reading method. My husband bought me a Kindle this summer when i started to read again, but I also get books from the library.

    Congrats on the RITA!

  23. Jo says:

Im reading Donna Kauffmans Let me in.. Good so far.. I have a few books im holding back for vacation.. an old one of Lisa Jacksons and Stella Camerons new one.. I want a Kindle but right now its just the paper books.. I have Instant Temptation preordered im hoping it gets here before we leave..

  24. Karen Erickson says:

Congratulations on your RITA nomination Jill! I LOVED Instant Attraction and I’m reading Instant Gratification right now (in paper). Those Wilder brothers are the best.

I use my iTouch to read, mostly via the Kindle application. I love it! It’s really cut down on my paperback book purchases which is a good thing, LOL. Not as much clutter.

  25. Robin says:

    Congratulations on your RITA nomination!!

  26. Allie says:

Congrats! I saw that in a list yesterday and was so pleased because I’d actually read it. It’s the only book on the list of nominations that I’ve read.

I have a Sony reader, pocket edition. I like it. I still prefer paper books, but some of the books I wanted to read were only available in ebooks so I got a gadget. I do like it for when I am going somewhere, since I only have to carry one thing instead of several (don’t want to run out of reading material!).

I am rereading Glory In Death in paper. I’m also reading Language of Miracles about animal communication (and how to do it) by Amelia Kinkade, which is wonderful. She is quite funny, which I did not expect. Instant Temptation is going to arrive courtesy of UPS on Monday. I can’t wait to read that one! I’m thinking I will reread the other two first, though.

  27. WendyG says:

I got my Kindle last summer and LOVE IT! That is actually how I discovered your books Jill. The online book seller just loves to give recommendations. ;-) I still love paper books, but the ease of “carrying” several books at one time is great! Recently finished Broken by Shiloh Walker. First book I’ve read of hers, and enjoyed it! PS – my online book seller goof! (or maybe their giving me a gift!) I ordered Instant Temptation in digital format, and I received the paperback version in the mail yesterday! I’m on chapter 5! I’m awaiting their reply to my email asking what happened and if they’re charging me for both. I checked….there is only one order – digital! This could get interesting! ;-)

  28. Linda V says:

I received the Nook for Christmas and love it –the advantage with it is that you can share books with others who have it. Downside-I keep forgetting to plug it in and charge up the battery :|

  29. Ronna says:

    Congrats!

I would love to be reading on a Kindle/Nook etc but braces to pay for– darn kids and their teeth.

I am reading Wild Ride by Jenny Crusie and Bob Mayer — also just finished JD Robb Fantasy in Death — loves me some Roarke!

  30. Mo says:

Congrats on the RITA nod. You deserve it. I’ve had my Kindle for 2 years now and I freakin’ love it. I travel for work and it is so much easier to pack than a dozen paper books. I have a jacket on mine that opens like a books so when I hold it it feels like a paper book. I jsut finished Mad, Bad Blonde by Cathie Linz and started Wild Rive by Jennfer Crusie & Bob Mayer. I am anxious for Instant Tempation to pop into my Kindle next week. . . Mo

  31. catslady says:

A big congratulations on the Rita nomination!!!

No I haven’t gotten into ebooks. I love my print books and being surrounded by them. I recently finished Demonfire by Kate Douglas and loved it.

  32. Barbara says:

Congratulations on the RITA nomination Jill. I knew you will a wonderful writer way back in the LOVESWEPT days…..Hopefully the nomination will get even more peope to read your work.

I am reading a desire by Jules Bennerr Seducing The Enemy’s Daughter and also Broken by Shiloh Walker.

  33. Donna M says:

Congratulations on the RITA nomination. You deserve it.

What am I reading now? Robyn Carr’s Angel Peak the 2nd Virgin River book for 2010. I love this series. The story is populated by some really wonderful secondary characters that are adding greatly to the story. Next up the last one in the series for 2010. I have a library book I need to get to, it is Patrick Swayze’s story, The Time of My Life. I’m sure it will be interesting.

At this point I am sticking with books as I can’t afford an ereader. I’m really happy with books. An ereader would be a real plus when traveling but I am not sure how well staring at that little screen to read a book would work for me. My apartment is small so not accumulating more books would be a plus but…

Everyone have a great weekend.

I can’t wait to pick up Instant Attraction.

  34. Elen says:

Mega congrats on the Rita nom, Jill. I’ve already twittered that, but it bears repeating.

I don’t have an ereader….yet. I’m still trying to decide between the Kindle and the Sony.

I just opened Toni Blake’s One Reckless Summer. Huge mistake. I’m supposed to be doing a big ol’ spring cleaning. Like that’s gonna happen now. Recently read: Louisa Edwards’ On the Steamy Side. Sooooo good. Robyn Carr’s Moonlight Road. Oh, those Riordan men. Finally, Sandra Hill’s Viking in Love. LOL funny.

Also, got a friend hooked on Jill Shalvis. My work here is done.

Can I have a cookie? :-D A great weekend to all.

  35. Marsha says:

Woohoo! Congratulations on the RITA nomination! It is well deserved. I just finished Instant Attraction and am about to begin Instant Gratification! Congratulations again!

  36. Brandy says:

Congratulations on the RITA nomination! I prefer paper books right now. But, if I ever bite the bullet and purchase an ereader I’d go for the Nook. I just finished reading The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen. Loved it.

  37. Jane says:

Congrats on the nomination. I’ve been reading Julie Garwood, Courtney Milan and Elisabeth Naughton.

  38. Chelsea B. says:

I’m more of a book reader myself :-)
And I’m reading Velvet Haven by Sophie Renwick which is freakin’ fantastic!

  39. Aly says:

Congrats on the RITA nomination! WOO HOO!

Oh how I wish that I had an ereader! Since I am currently standing in the unemployment line, I have been told I have to get a job before I can have an ereader!

Right now I am reading Robb’s Fantasy in Death and then will read Baldacci’s True Blue.

  40. trish says:

I tried to find Instant Temptation at Walmart today with no success. I will pick it up tommorrow at B&N,
and spend my Sunday reading it.

I have had a difficult time since finishing the Virgin River series by Robin Carr getting back into any other books.

Jill will pull me out of my slump.

Holding a book and smelling the ink will always be the only way to read!!

  41. Lexi Connor says:

Congrats on the Rita nomination! I’ll be cheering you on in Nashville!

  42. Kathryn S. says:

    Congratulations on the RITA nomination!

I use a Sony ereader too most of the time but I still buy books at times. I also listen to audiobooks too.

  43. tennismom mary g says:

Yeah, about audio books. I read mostly romance & erotica. Just wondering how those love scenes play out on audio?

  44. Diana says:

Congratulations on the RITA nomination for Instant Attraction. Such a good book!

I read paper books and don’t own an ereader. I’m currently reading Meg Cabot’s Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls #2: The New Girl.

  45. Lori says:

I love my ereader. I’ve had it for about 5 years now. I read both paper and e-. I use an ebookwise and my iPhone.

Right now, I’ve been on a big romantic suspense kick. I just finished Kylie Brant’s Mindhunter series. Excellent.

And congrats on the RITA nomination!!

  46. Stephanee says:

Congrats! I think Instant Attraction is one of my all time favorites of yours.

Love my Kindle even though it’s the old one and not the newer more spiffy one. Love the dictionary feature and that I can download my books in seconds. Still drives me crazy that there’s no file management system though, especially once you downloaded more than 50 books.

My last e-book read: Slow Heat, but I still pick up dead tree books from time to time and suppose I always will.

  47. Shiloh Walker says:

I’ve got a Sony Reader Touch which I adore…I use it a lot when I’m one the elliptical at the YMCA. I still read a ton of paperbacks, though. My reader is awesome for roadtrips, vacation, that sort of thing. AND… I store my books on it-series and stuff, that way when I’m working on the next one, if I forget an eyecolor or something? The touch has a search feature and I can go back to a quick search, plus it also lets me make notes, so I’ building up a small stream of notes for future needs.

Right now I’m reading Magic in the Shadows by Devon Monk. After that, I lucked out-Lynn Viehl sent me an ARC of DREAMVEIL which isn’t out until May-I’m a total junkie for her books.

  48. Patricia says:

Congrats on the RITA nom! Real, hold-’em-in-my-hand books for me. Love the smell. Like someone else said, not certain my eyes are up for the screen books, & am not electronically-oriented.

    Patricia

  49. kh says:

    wtg she is smiling whoooo

  50. Sam says:

Congratulations on your RITA nomination, how exciting!

I also have drank from the Kindle-aid! (I’m going to tell my husband that Babs, he’s going to laugh!)
I got my Kindle 2 years ago, I kept telling my husband I’d love to get the cheaper prices on my reading addiction, but I loved holding books. He thought it was a hint and bought it for me for Christmas. Now I don’t like reading paper any more!
The Kindle is easy to hold, has a paper like display that you have to see to believe, and the font size is adjustable so easily. I dial it up when I’m reading at night and back down during the day. And the battery last a week on one charge if you keep the wireless off most of the time. And it’s so easy to hold and carry with you! When I leave home it’s car keys, phone and Kindle! Love, love, LOVE it! As if you couldn’t tell. :)
I’ve been trying a whole bunch of new authors because I don’t have a TBR list any longer. I just came to your website looking for your backlist to see if I’ve missed anything. :)
J.D. Robb/Nora is always on my can’t-wait-to-read-the-next-book list, along with Suzanne Brockmann. I like series with continued characters, and have enjoyed reading Lorelei James and Lora Leigh, Marliss Melton, John Sandford, and on and on. I’m going to go back to Amazon and check out some of the ones above. Thanks for posting this, what a great way to find some new authors. :)

  51. Sam says:

P.S. Those Kindle features I wrote about above are on the new Kindle. My old was was pushed in the sink and “washed” by my 4 year old. Funny now, right. :) I held out for about 4 days and ordered the newest one and it is amazing. :)

  52. limecello says:

Whoops – somehow I missed this post- but yay for an ereader, and CONGRATULATIONS! On the RITA nomination! I love those Wilder boys :D

  53. Teresa says:

Congratulations:) I love my sony pocket ereader too. I was saying to one of my friends how much I loved it and sometimes want to hug it she looked at me strangely but then she doesnt’ have an ereader so she wouldn’t understand. Can’t wait to read Instant Temptation. I just have to find the online store that is selling it for Canadian readers. Thanks for all the amazing reads:)
