The Silver Lining

February 9, 2010 | Filed under: Stuff

This past week we lost a family friend. It wasn’t entirely unexpected but it still makes me ache. Alpha Man took it hard, but Middle surprised us by being hit the hardest. For the past few weeks, she’s been acting like … well, like a typical teenager. I could describe it for you, but it’s not pretty, and you can probably all imagine. Anyway, suffice it to say that from the moment we heard the sorrowful news, she did a complete 180. Here’s our text conversation from yesterday.

Her:
Mom, I love you.

Me:
I love you too.

Her:
No I mean I LOVE you. Always And Forever.

Me:
AAF …

Her:
Promise?

Me:
Of course.

Her:
Okay, cuz I love you AAF, even when I’m a bee-yotch. Even when YOU’RE one.

Me:
Hey.

Her:
Mom.

Me:
Okay, you’re right. It happens. AAF, even when.

Her:
And there’s something else. A favor.

Me:
Fine, you can have a temporary reprieve on being grounded and have the car. If you stay nice.

Her:
I was going to say don’t die before me.

Me:
Aw.

Her:
But being ungrounded works too …

sorry about your family friend. I know how it feels. My dad passed away Jan 2 and I am still not doing very well. Then a good friends dad past away a week later. So 2010 sucks so far.

Hugs to you and your family.

  2. Stacy ~ says:

{{{Jill}}} This post brought tears to my eyes. Funny, sweet, and sad. So sorry for your loss and how hard you are each taking it. No matter how well you’re prepared, it’s not easy to lose a loved one. Your heart still aches something awful. Give each of your family members a big hug. That should help.

  3. Andey says:

    awww…

    (((hugs)))

  4. Dee says:

I am sorry to hear about your friend. Sounds like it was an indirect sort of blessing to y’all. My daughter has the most terrible PMS, for 2 weeks beforehand, but then she turns into her sweet self again. It’s so odd….

We cann’t text each other because it takes me 10 years to text more than 2 words… LOL

  5. Pat L. says:

I am so sorry for you and your families loss. My hugs to you all.

  6. trish says:

My sympathy goes to your whole family.
I love that you communicate through text. My daughter would love it if I got with the program and learned to text.

  7. Stephanie says:

I get where your daughter is coming from when my grandma passes away in July I made my other grandma promise she wouldn’t die for a long time…

My mom has finally learned to text, I think she did because it was my main mode of communication, I’m even writing this on my phone…

  8. tennismom says:

    Aww. I love your girls.
    Sorry for your loss.

  9. JoyceZ says:

I’m so sorry for your loss.

  10. Liza says:

Sorry for your loss. Hugs to you and your family.

  11. D says:

Sincere sympathies to your family for your loss. The text with middle was heart wrenching. It never ceases to amaze me how you could want to wring their(teens) neck one moment and just hold them close the next.

  12. Lori says:

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Even when expected, it’s still very difficult and emotional.

As for Middle, it’s sad that it affected her so deeply, but how wonderful for you to know how much she loves you.

  13. limecello says:

I’m so sorry for your loss, Jill.

  14. Donna M says:

((((Hugs)))) Jill for you and the family. It is never easy to have someone you care about pass away. It leaves a hole in the heart. I think it is hard for younger people sometimes because they don’t realize that life can sometimes be to short. Remember the good in the friendship from your friend. It helps having those memories.

  15. Stephanie P. says:

I know how you feel, I lost 5 people in two months, about 3 months ago. It was hard. 3 family members and 2 friends. Its still hard. But im sorry about your loss.

  16. Jennifer M says:

    Sorry for your loss.

  17. SonyaM says:

{{{Jill and Family}}} – Sorry for your loss.

  18. Tracy S says:

I’m so sorry for your loss.

  19. Karin says:

Aw. I’m sorry for your loss, Jill. Your family will be in my prayers. But that is an awesome text conversation. Definitely one to save and enjoy in the future.

  20. Celise says:

That’s gotta be tough. But I would feel the same way about my parents if we lost a family friend, too. I just keep thinking that I really hope they die together because couldn’t handle it being just the one.
