Not Yo Momma’s Book Club
December 3, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff
Yesterday two things happened. First, I rediscovered Fig Newtons. YUM. And second, I was inundated with email after my comment about doing a book club here.
So … let’s do it. Let’s make a book club. You and me and whoever else wants to play. We’ll nominate books and narrow it down. We’ll give a certain length of time to read, say a few weeks, and then we’ll discuss. For fun.
It’s all about the fun here in Jill’s World.
Now I’m not a rule follower normally, but I would like to make several … guideline statements, if you will. One, this is NOT going to be a literary book club. Nope, this is going to be a book club of romance proportions. Which brings us to number two … the books we pick must have a happily ever. No exceptions. I read to feel good, to escape, to have fun, and I’m not into feeling like crap at the end.
Okay, so … which book should we start with? Make your suggestions in the comments (contemp, historical, vampire, whatever floats your boat), and after a few days, I’ll narrow it down to a handful and we’ll vote. Sound good? Then let the fun begin. So. Nominate your choice, something on the shelves as of 12/1 or available at the online bookstores, please. Go ahead, I’m here waiting … (Actually, I’m going to go work, but you know what I mean…)

So many to choose from! What haven’t I read that isn’t a paranormal with a “delayed” HEA? Hmmm.
LuAnn McLane’s He’s No Prince Charming
Lisa Kleypas Seduce Me At Sunrise
These are 2 of my (numerous) choices.

I am game, no suggestions as I have no idea what is on the shelves but a question: How long after you announce the title do we have to read the book? I ask because I am overseas and it takes a amazon a few weeks for delivery.

Seduce Me at Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas
Bed of Roses by Nora Roberts
Anything by Tessa Dare
I’ll look on my bookshelf when I get home and add a few more books. I love the idea of a bookclub where we read romances.

Guess I should have said any book by Tessa Dare.

I have not read any of her books yet, but Roxanne St. Claire’s, Kill Me Twice is on my TBR pile. It is part of her *bullet catchers* series but I think each title is a stand alone story.
I am a fan of paranormal/vampire books, but so many are part of a series that build on the previous book. Not opposed to doing a book that starts a series but not sure if that falls under guideline statement 2…must have a HEA ending.

I’m on board but I have no ideas. I haven’t read a book since your last book Jill. I have the Damon Claus book sitting on my desk and I’m slowly working my way through it.
So anything is good in my boat as long as it’s good!

I nominate any book by Nora Roberts (how about Bed of Roses, her latest?) or Susan Wiggs. But really, I’m open to anything.

As I am on a paranormal romance kick, I say we start with kresley cole’s “a hunger like no other”, the first book in her immortals after dark series.
Posted on December 3rd, 2009 at 8:04 amFor a romance book, I have always loved susan elizabeth phillips and her chicago stars football series is a winner for me everytime, the first book is titled “it had to be you”.
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!

Sounds fun – I don’t have a sugestion at the moment, but any Nora Roberts and I like most of the authors listed above.

I’ve never read a historical before so that could be a challenge for me
I’m usually a contemporary kinda gal but any romantic suspense would be cool too!
This should be fun

I’m drawing a blank on suggestions because lately I’ve been rereading to save the money! But I’m game for just about any romance.
A friend sent me an email with a link to this really cool video of Christmas lights, I wanted to share so I hope the link works!

My kind of book club!!
For those who don’t mind reading on the computer, apparently Amazon has free software for your PC to read Kindle format (You’d have to pay for the book itself, though). That would be faster if shipping takes forever for you.
Also, maybe Jill could line up a couple in a row for what’s next so that if someone misses the first one, they could do the next ones.
I’ll read anything with a happy ending. I’m happy to reread stuff I liked, too, so I’m in! I don’t have any suggestions at the moment.

I’m all for it and love books with happy ending, seriously why do people write anything else…
I’m interested in what people pick because I read tons but love to be introduced to new authors/books.

I am open to just about anything, but I do like the idea of Bed of Roses by Nora Roberts. I have it, but haven’t managed to get started on it.
I love this idea! I am so not *literary* when it comes to my reading!!

Yippee!!!! This is a book club I can get into. I’ve not read any vampire books, not my style, but what the hey….life’s too short not to try something new. Oh and thanks for not making it literary, I’m shallow and work hard at staying that way(lol).

Any book by Susan Mallery (I have the Buchanan series and the Bakery Sisters series in my TBR pile, but anything works), or anything Nora Roberts.
This sounds like fun.

I’m game. Susan Elizabeth Phillips works for me. I’ve also noticed a new Rachel Gibson book out. I’ve only read “Sex, Lies, and Online Dating” so far, but I really liked it.

Reading the suggestions is getting me excited about a book club! But let me throw something out there. I see many suggested Nora Roberts as an author to read. She is fantastic and I have read many of her books and her Bridal trilogy is on my TBR pile, but I kinda’ like the idea of reading a new author or a newer author that is not so well established. We could help spread the word about someone new! It opens up a lot of areas for discussion. What will we really say about a book by Nora Roberts other than the woman is gifted and a phenomenal story teller? Just a thought.
P.S. to Jill-

I love a happy ending too. There are no books out for my favorite authors right now. Jill??? lol
I think we should all discuss Jill’s Double Play for our first book. Love that read!
Failing that, please no Vampires. I know your into them right now, but after reading the first three charlene harris books, I’m done.
I love Nora Roberts as well.

There is a new author Louisa Edwards that has a book out about a chef/cook titled Can’t Stand The Heat. It is on shelves now although I haven’t bought a copy yet. Another suggestion there are lots of good Christmas anthologies out now that would be right in with the holiday season. Jill has two or three out right now, any of them would be a good choice. I’ve read Bed of Roses by Nora even though most of us here seem to enjoy her books it might still be fun to have it as our first Book Club read. My vote goes for one of Jill’s!
Ater all this will be Jill’s Romance Book Club, I just love it.

Well this is the best book club notion I’ve heard in a while!
Posted on December 3rd, 2009 at 4:29 pmHow about
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs (Paranormal)
The Nonesuch by Georgette Heyer (historical)
or Naked in Death by J D Robb.

I’m in and I’ll read anything!

I’ll read anything. Currently in my TBR pile:
Toni Blake – One Reckless Summer
Christina Dodd – Storm of Visions
Carly Phillips – Lucky Break
Susan Mallery – Hot on Her Heels
Jill – I do have your latest Christmas Blaze, but I’m wondering if this would be as much fun for you if you’re discussing one of your own books.

Kate Angell – Richmand Rogues series

I tend to be a contemporary kinda gal also and although not really into paranormal am willing to give anything a try.
I haven’t read anything by Nora Roberts (I know I know how could this be). So one of hers would be a great choice for me.
I love Rachel Gibson and her hockey players. Lori Foster’s SBC fighters are the same and I know she has a new one coming soon. So maybe we can read that down the road. Erin McCarthy usually makes me laugh and that’s always a plus.
I love the idea of a newer author so we can get the word out.
Although I am always willing to read Jill’s books over and over, maybe we should give her a break let her read and talk about someone else.

Posted on December 4th, 2009 at 8:32 amif you are looking for new authors
Star Ambrose our little secert
Gemma Halliday- Scandal sheet
Jana Deloen- mischief in mudbug
Ginny says:
This sounds like it could really be fun!
My recommendations:
Romantic Suspense:
Tara Janzen – We could start the Steele Street series with Crazy Hot, book 1, or go to the latest, Breaking Loose as they all stand alone
Paranormal:
Larrisa Ione, Nalini Singh, or Shelly Laurenston are all great, but we may want to stick to something more mainstream for the first book.
Historical:
any book by Julia Quinn
or At the Bride Hunt Ball by Olivia Parker
Contemporary:
, so how about:
Posted on December 4th, 2009 at 4:59 pmWe can’t read you unfortunately
Erin McCarthy’s fast track series: Flat-Out Sexy(book 1) or Hard and Fast(book 2)
or Holding Out For a Hero by HelenKay Dimon
or Talk Me Down or Start Me Up both by Victoria Dahl
Nancy L. says:
I like all of Ginny’s contemporary choices. I already have them all. I have read the two fast track books and am eagerly waiting for the third one to come out. I have another author to had to the list. The Sweetheart Knitting Club by Lori Wilde.
