Lyrics

November 2, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff

I’m a lyrics hound. I love to listen to them to find the story. True, sometimes I like to just wail away with my iPod just for the sake of singing as loud as possible, but I’ve learned the hard way that THAT can be embarrassing, so I try to control myself.

As a result, I hardly ever get caught on the trail singing and nearly getting run over by Luke Wilson anymore

Okay, I still do that. But we’re discussing lyrics. And the story in them. One of my favorite bands for this is Lifehouse. Their songs always tell a story. But this weekend I listened to Vertical Horizon’s FOREVER.

“Forever”
Take these roses off of me
Let me live, let me be
For a little while
Let my eyes,
See everything and nothing in their time
I do not mind

Who’ve guess I’d learn
To let the walls around me burn
Light up the hillside
My words, I ate them for so long and nothing changed
It was just the same

And I don’t know if you see me here
But I can tell you your face is clear
I will see you…

Forever
Forever
I will see you
Forever
Forever

Call me close once again
Call me teacher, call me friend
Just like the first time
Call my name, it echoes in the walls around this room
Its all you

I don’t know if you hear me there
When it’s darkest and no one cares
I will hear you…

Forever
Forever
I will hear you
Forever
Forever

I wanted you to be everything to me
Now I’ve got to learn to carry on
I know I cannot hide this emptiness inside
But nothing is the same since you’ve gone

Send me letters from above
Send me strength, send me love
Such sweet love
Sing me songs that echo in my head and in my heart
That’s where you are

And I don’t know if you feel me here
I can tell you one thing that’s clear
I will feel you…

Forever
Forever
I will feel you
Forever
Forever
I will hear you
Forever
Forever
I will see you
Forever
Forever

Take these roses off of me
Let me live, let me be

The song is sad enough to make me need cookies, but sometimes sad is good. Do you have a favorite song right now, or lyrics that are making you laugh, smile, cry, think? Share.

Oh and who has tried the new double stuffed Golden Oreos? Oh. My. God. A little bite of heaven right there, let me tell you … (Oh and I don’t recomend eating — or in my case, inhaling — a whole rack by yourself and then going for a hike straight up the mountain, just FYI) Which reminds me, I’d also like to know your favorite cookie. Thank you for sharing.

Underwater by Vertical Horizon, believe it or not. Hubby is having surgery tomorrow and I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed right now. I’m sure after he’s been home for a couple of weeks it will be more like Bodies by Drowning Pool ’cause he’ll be driving me crazy.

Homemade peanut butter cookies with melty hershey kisses on top are the best!

  2. Booklover1335 says:

    Hey Jill,
Happy Monday. One of my fav songs is Brighter Than Sunshine by Aqualung….definitely brings a smile to my face whenever I hear it. If you want to check out the full version, you can listen to it at Grooveshark:

    http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/search/?query=brighter%20than%20sunshine

and my fav cookie is my choc chip cookies. They are the best…seriously. I make up a whole lot of dough at once, scoop it into balls then freeze it. Then I can take out however many I want at a time and have fresh baked choc chips cookies within minutes without having a mess every time. It’s great. Email me if you want the recipe. So much better than the trad. Tollhouse.

  3. Trish says:

When I want to indulge in a good cry – Cycles by Frank Sinatra. He’s not a fav singer but the song works.
Book of Love by Peter Gabriel is my Ahhhhhh…..song.

Lofthouse cookies when I’m too lazy to mess up the kitchen. Snickerdoodles when I want to bake but frosted sugar cookies are my all time favorite.

  4. Shannon says:

I can’t think of a favorite song at the moment but my favorite cookies are Thin Mints. Gotta love those Girl Scouts!!!

  5. Kelly Breakey says:

    Hey Jill:

My new favorite song is (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To by Weezer. New song off their Raditude album. It’s a jump up and dance your ass off kind of song.

Gotta love that…as for cookies…do I really have to pick just one? That seems so unfair. I mean how do I pick my Grams peanut butter cookies over fudge covered Oreo’s. One is clearly homemade and the other is just a drive to the store away? What about oatmeal raisin, shortbread, or chocolate chip? How do you think all of the other cookies will feel if we leave them out? (Hand to forehead) This is truly the hardest thing I have ever been asked to do. Nope, sorry I can’t do it. Can I get a lifeline here?

  6. Liza says:

I love Girl Scout cookies. My two favorites are Thin Mint and Samoas. I really use to love Oreo’s, but they changed the recipe and they don’t taste as good to me anymore. I also love the Christie Cookies we get every year at work for Christmas. Mr. Christie makes some of the best cookies ever and you can have them delivered to your house too.

  7. Stacy ~ says:

I’m so very mainstream. Right now my favorite song is Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me”. Just about anything by Nickelback too.

Warm oatmeal raisin is today’s choice. Yummmmm.

  8. limecello says:

Favorite cookies eh? Well – you won’t believe me after this comment :X but cookies aren’t my *favorite* sweet.
That being said – recently I’ve been making a ton of no bake cookies. (Chocolate, peanut butter… and then oatmeal so I can feel it’s healthy.)

I love white chocolate chip craisin cookies… and am very partial to chocolate white chocolate chip cookies. [Where the batter is milk/dark chocolate, with ... white chocolate chips of course]. And then there’s something about pumpkin cookies around Halloween/Thanksgiving… and Christmas cookies that are special. I just love a good sugar cookie. And those are the cookies I can’t resist.

  9. jo says:

I love Peanut Butter Cookies.. Any kind im not picky.. Fav Song? Anything Carrie Underwood!!

  10. tennismom mary g says:

    Hi Jill
There are songs that I love for sentimental reasons
like Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye. Hubby & I danced to that the night he proposed. Then there are the songs that have awesome lyrics that I equate with smart writing in a book. Too many of those to choose from. When I admire a song though, I always look up the songwriter. I always admire that person more than the performer (I know sometimes its the same person).
Fave cookie: Double Fudgeos which is good becuase they are so sweet I can only handle 2 or 3 at the most. Generally not a cookie person except last year hubby made these cranberry pistachio biscotti to die for.

  11. Gena says:

My favorite song right now is Broken by lifehouse. I listen to it constantly since I downloaded it to my cell phone. Regular Double Stuffed Oreo’s are my weakness. And I’m with you on inhaling a whole rack. It’s easy to do, but not easy on the tummy.

  12. Ashley says:

Right now I’m big on Joss Stone, love her new album.
Fave cookie, well I love me some Oreos and milk, but I can’t pass up a good macadamia nut cookie either!

  13. D says:

My favorite song depends on my mood. Last week I ran away from home (ok only for 10 hrs, but they were precious to me) I listened to a lot of Simon and Garfunkel, and consumed a lot of sugar cookies.(my fav)

  14. limecello says:

Also – oh my gosh – I don’t think I’ve heard “Forever” but… I won’t tell you how [obsessed] I was with “Everything You Want” by Vertical Horizon… <3

  15. Julia says:

Carr’s Ginger Lemon Creme cookies, soooo good, but $$. I’m trying to figure out how to make them.

“I Know” by Jude. Check out the You Tube Live version in San Fran.

I know there’s nowhere you can hide it
I know the feeling of alone
I know that you do not feel invited
But, come back, come back in from the cold

Tell me how you really feel
Tell me what is on the inside of you
    All the somethings you conceal
Only keep away the ones who love you

  16. Lynn says:

Currently, my favorite song is “Gettin’ You Home” by Chris Young. I also like “My Doorbell” and “Hotel Yorba” by the White Stripes and “Steady as She Goes” by the Raconteurs. I’m all over the place when it comes to music. So many good artists out there.

Favorite cookie, chocolate chip or thin mint.

  17. Susan says:

One of my very favorite songs is Moments by Emerson Drive. I love one of the choruses:

I’ve had my moments, days in the sun
Moments I was second to none
    Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn’t do
Like the day I walked away from the wine
For a woman who became my wife
And a love that, when it was right,
    Could always see me through
Lookin’ at me now you might not know it
    But I’ve had my moments

Favorite cookie white chocolate macadamia nut. mmmmm. breakfast of champions!

  18. april says:

Um, kind of obsessed with You Belong to Me by Taylor Swift. I’m not a huge fan of hers or that type of music, but I totally rock out in the safety of my car.

I’ve also been (still) obsessed with the Avenue Q and Rent soundtracks.

Next week, it’s all Rob Thomas all the time (seeing him in concert with Carolina Liar and OneRepublic).

  19. Brandy says:

I like all music and have a hard time picking a favorite, though right now I keep meaning to pick up an iTunes card so I can download No Heaven by Champion.
As for favorite cookie? Homemade Vanilla Wafers. *G*

  20. Donna M says:

Favorite song, cannot pick just one! Right now almost anything Michael Buble sings is good with me. Since I am of an older generation I tend to like music that is not necessarily popular right now. One of my favorites by Michael Buble is Moondance, there is just something about his version of it that makes me smile, makes me want to get up & dance.

Favorite cookie, again just one??!! Last year I discovered a very yummy chocolate chip cookie recipe from a chef in San Francisco when he was on a local program. In fact, I made them last week. That recipe has replaced my Toll House cookie recipe that I have made for years & years! I am also a big, big fan of Brownies, homemade of course! I use an old Hershey’s cocoa recipe that is very yummy. Now I want a cookie but I haven’t had lunch yet!

  21. Deb says:

Unfortunately, the only song lyrics that have been stuck in my head lately are PBS toddler programming theme songs.

However, my three year old daughter seems to have Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” in hers. I am always torn between cracking up and feeling disturbed when she dances around waving her little hand in the air “…if you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it…”

Favorite cookie…I can’t choose. It would be disloyal to all the other cookies. I am an equal-opportunity cookie eater.

  22. Deb says:

Oh, but Most Romantic Song EVER has got to be At Last by Etta James.

  23. trish says:

My favorite right now is Kenny Chesney/Dave Matthews.
    I’m Alive.

“Breathing in and outs a blessing, can’t you see? Today’s the first day of the rest of my life. I’m alive and well.

When my daughter was in Brigham and Women’s I would stop at the machine on my way out of the hospital everday for these mini choc chip cookies. They were my way of eating my feelings of guilt for having to leave her. I still love them. Try not to eat them as much anymore.

  24. Lori says:

Right now one of my favorites is “Just A Dream” by Carrie Underwood.

My all time favorite cookie is the fruit cake cookie I make at Christmas. I have to make dozens and dozens because they fight over them at work!

  25. Nicole S says:

My favorite song right now is “Gettin’ You Home” by Chris Young. It’s always stuck in my head.

My favorite cookie is chocolate chip, but I also really like the ones with M&Ms too.

  26. Edita says:

One of the songs that always gets me thinking is Rob Thomas’ “Ever the Same”.
    Ever The Same lyrics

We were drawn from the weeds
    We were brave like soldiers
Falling down under the pale moonlight
    You were holding to me
    Like a someone broken
And I couldn’t tell you but I’m telling you now

Just let me hold you while you’re falling apart
Just let me hold you and we’ll both fall down

    Fall on me
Tell me everything you want me to be
Forever with you forever in me
    Ever the same

We would stand in the wind
    We were free like water
    Flowing down
Under the warmth of the sun
Now it’s cold and we’re scared
    And we’ve both been shaken
    Hey, look at us
Man, this doesn’t need to be the end

Just let me hold you while you’re falling apart
Just let me hold you and we’ll both fall down

Fall on me tell me everything you want me to be
    Forever with you
    Forever in me
    Ever the same
    Call on me
I’ll be there for you and you’ll be there for me
    Forever it’s you
    Forever in me
    Ever the same

    You may need me there
    To carry all your weight
But you’re no burden I assure
    You tide me over
With a warmth I’ll not forget
But I can only give you love

Fall on me tell me everything you want me to be
    Forever with you
    Forever in me
    Ever the same
    Call on me
I’ll be there for you and you’ll be there for me
    Forever it’s you
    Forever in me
    Ever the same

    Forever with you
    Forever in me
    Ever the same(Ever the same)

My favorite cookie is a german cookie that’s made with gingerbread and has a white hard coating they are called Pfeffernog (sp?).

  27. WendyS says:

I really like I Wanna Kiss a Girl by Keith Urban and Living for the Night by George Strait.

Favorite cookie?? Just one?? I love those peanut butter with chocolate kisses; oatmeal with chocolate chips; and a Norwegian cookie called Krumkake (loaded with whip cream and butter!)

  28. Diana says:

I love the song “Papa Was A Rodeo” by The Magnetic Fields. I could listen to it over and over again and have done so.

    http://www.metrolyrics.com/papa-was-a-rodeo-lyrics-the-magnetic-fields.html

One of my favorite cookies is Newman-O’s mint creme filled chocolate cookies. Delicious!

  29. Shannon McKelden says:

Great song ideas, ladies! I’ll be busy for hours on Napster looking them all up!

Two that are speaking to me now are Beautiful Disaster by Jon McLaughlin and Hollywood is Not America by Ferris (I think?). Both were pivotal in coming up with the book I’m working on now. It was like my heroine sprouted fully formed from those two songs!

  30. bonita says:

I like any song in which I can hear, decipher, and understand the lyrics without blushing.

Edita: they’re Pffernusse and are best aged till they’re rock hard. Then you dip them in brandy till they’re soft enough to bite. Pffernusse and lebkuchen are my very favorites. It’s time to start baking. . .

  31. Celise says:

I have 4 songs off the new “Shinedown” CD that I love. One is called “What A Shame”:

    “What a shame/what a shame/To judge a life/That you can’t change/The choir sings/The church bells ring/So won’t you give this man his wings/What a shame/To have to beg you to see/We’re not all the same/What a shame.”

The other is called “Sound of Madness”:

“I created the sound of madness/Wrote the book on pain/Somehow I’m still here to explain/That the darkest hour/Never comes in the night/ You can sleep with a gun/But when you gonna wake up and fight.”

Linkin Park also has some great lyrics, particularly one off their latest album about the war. I love anything by them as they’re my favorite group.

  32. Edita says:

Thank you Bonita for the name and I’m going to try them with Brandy next time. Sounds yummy!

  33. Sena says:

My fav song of the moment is “Simple Man” by Lynard Skynard. It reminds me to try and live better every time I hear it.

Fav cookie is the classic chocolate chip, homemade!!

  34. Christopher Taylor says:

Fruit Cakes are quite addictive and my mom always bake them every month.*.,

  35. Maya Bailey says:

Fruit Cakes are the specialty of my grandmother, she bakes lots of fruit cakes.:`-

  36. Ariana Coleman says:

i love those german fruit cakes because they have more nuts in it ‘,
