How To Cure Boredom
September 30, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff
Update: Randomly drawn winners are Rosie G and Terri W … please email me with your snailmail and a few book choices, thanks for playing!
Original Post:
I’m sure we each have our own ways to get over the workday hump. Me? I email with my good friend Nicole. She’s a writer too, and we often critique each other’s work. Actually, I send her my work-in-progress and beg her to fix it. Hey, what are good friends for?
But it’s not all work. In fact, much of Nicole’s and my time is spent decidedly goofing off. We both sort of have a Ranger obsession. Ranger as in Carlos Manoso, one of Janet Evanovich’s characters from her Plum series. I’m hoping the majority of you have read at least some of those books because the thing Nicole and I do to alleviate our boredom is pretend we’re Ranger and write ridiculous and amusing journal entries.
Shall I share? Okay, what the heck. Just remember, BORED people, so don’t hold it against us.
Ranger Journal Entry from One For the Money:
Just got back from uncuffing hot little wannabe bounty hunter from her shower rod. Utilized extreme peripheral vision from army ranger training to check out the goods. Day-um. Did I mention she was cold … and wet? God loves me. Slipped up several times on my ghetto-speak this week. I’m thinking that from this book on, I’m limiting speech altogether. Chicks dig that silent mysterious crap. On a positive note, she seems rather negative in her feelings about Morelli, so I’ll likely have zero problems closing the deal. No way am I going to have to wait seven more books to see her naked again.
Ranger Journal Entry from after Lean Mean Thirteen:
Am back on Haywood after dropping Steph off at Morelli’s. Without her underwear. I’m on 5 watching the monitors, because I figure Morelli will show up at the front doors, gun in hand, in less than five, four, three– Yeah, there he is, looking pissed, too. He wants her panties back. No problem. They’re right here in my pocket, and they’ve got my name all over the ass. I’ll be happy to hand them back … Better get going, he’s pounding on the door. With any luck, I’ll be pounding something entirely different by dawn …
I know, we’re silly (Nicole has a few on her blog from us as well, so go peek if you’d like!) But since I shared, you have to share. Help us out, write a journal entry from your favorite character, whether it’s from TV or a book or hell, your make-believe friend. Come on now, don’t leave me hanging out here all by myself … (And if you can’t come up with a journal entry, that’s okay! Not everyone is as crazy as I am, I get that. You can just tell me your favorite character of all time.)
And since I’m one, lazy, and two, still grieving the loss of my dear editor (see yesterday’s post), rather than write any more, I’m going to simply tell you that I’m going to pick a few random comments from today and give away copies of my books.
So get cracking and talk to me.

Hi Jill

Posted on September 30th, 2009 at 1:16 amIt’s great that you have such a good friend and critique partner in Nicole. Thank you for the fun post.
Killashandra Ree from Anne McCaffrey’s Crystal Singer trilogy is one of my all-time favorite characters.
Although classified as SF they are more Romance with the HEA by the end of each novel.
All the best,
RKCharron

I can’t think this early in the morning, but omg how hilarious! I adore Ranger and your “insightful” journal enteries are spot-on
Favorite character of all-time? Well, one might consider Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. Or Sam Starrett from Brockmann’s Troubleshooters. There are so many I’ve loved for years.

My condolences for your loss.
Loved your Ranger journal bits.
And you are so sweet to have another contest – Kate would love it I am sure. In honor of Kate, what could be better other than the kinds words about her all over the romance blog sites. I am sure she is playing with Mountain Barbie up in heaven.

Hi Jill! Funny blog – nice way to start my day
I’m just not good at writing a journal entry but I can tell you that my all time favourite character is Mr Darcy – cliché
I’m so sorry about Ms Kate. I’ve read about her all around blog-land and everyone has only kind words. I’m so sorry I haven’t found out about her earlier.

I have enough problems with my own blog, much less someone else’s. I adore Ranger- even have a Rangeman Magnet on my truck, and a tote bag. Morelli is great too, but I have had my share of Italian men.
I think you should share more of your entries with us.
Ranger and Roarke would be my favorites I think. But there are so many out there…

Haha, I loved those!! And what a way to start the day…with a nice little dose of Ranger!
However, I will leave the writing to you…otherwise I’ll just embarass myself!! Haha

It’s a good day. I’ve got Alpha Man, great daughters & loveable pets. I’ve got a legion of fans that think I’m funny no matter what I say or do. I have a job that I can do in my PJs. I’m staying in bed today to keep this perfect status quo. Who knows what mayhem lurks outside my bedroom door? Tomorrow is another day.

I’m a HUGE Stephanie Plum fan and actually my critique partner and I are both fans and a few weeks ago she sent me a “Fans of Ranger” story line that was hiliarious.
My favorite is Dr Jane Darlington from Nobody’s Baby But Mine, Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Her journal entry:
Posted on September 30th, 2009 at 6:15 amToday I plan on buying a few more baby clothes and while I’m in town I might as well buy some super-glue to stick the remotes on the coffee table and some mice I can release in Cal’s car….he hates mice. That’s what he gets for throwing another woman in my face again while I’m here big as a hippo.. I might wanna buy some rat poison, just in case…Not for the mice.

I am so sorry for the loss of Ms. Kate. My thoughts and prayers to all who knew her. My favorite character changes from book to book but I would say that Jonas Harrington from Christine Feehan’s Drake Sisters books would rank high. I don’t write so this has nothing to do with journaling.
Just wanted to let you know.

Just finished reading the first 3 Stephanie Plum books. Gotta say I really like Morelli and I’m beginning to really like Ranger, but the more I read the less I like Stephanie. Of course I’ve only begun the series but so far she seems like a real pain.
Posted on September 30th, 2009 at 7:14 amEve and Roarke are my fave characters. My husband and I even named our kitten Eve. We also have an agreement that if Eve and Roarke were real we would dump each other in a heartbeat.
Sharon says:
Jill, you and Nicole have GOT to be there at the next Babefest! Can you imagine the Ranger Journal comments you two would have after that?!

Oh no! I am the loser of the bunch, because I have not read any of this series
I have read lots of other ones by Janet…but none of these. Looks like I will havet to start from the bottom and work my way up. I know that she has a ton of them out there now!

Ranger is such a wonderful character. He’s steamy hot and dangerous. I have to say that I really like Morelli too. He’s hot and (somewhat) responsible. No wonder it’s so hard for Stephanie to choose between the two. I couldn’t. Sigh…

I love me some Ranger! My husband and I are always debating who Stephanie should end up with. I say Ranger because, well, the HOTNESS. He says Joe, because Stephanie should settle down and get married.
He gets irrationally offended when I choose Ranger, because he relates to Morelli. Apparently, by being a fan of Ranger, I am really saying I wish I had not married my husband and was spending my time ho-ing around with hot guys.

Seems like you & Nicole are having too much fun!!
My all time favorite character…just one…maybe Rhett Butler or maybe it is J.T. Hawk from Shadow Hawk or maybe it is the MacGregor from Nora or is it the Wilder Brothers? Can’t decide!

The journal entries are fabulous! Does Janet Evanovich know how much you like Ranger? *G*
Posted on September 30th, 2009 at 12:16 pmIt’s too hard to pick a favorite character. There’s always swoon-worthy Roarke. Or protective and HOT Ranger. Then again, I like how Eve can kick butt. And have to say Grandma Mazur cracks me up! Have you read Finger Lickin’ Fifteen? The backyard barbecue scene? STILL makes me laugh.*G*
Nicole says:
Jill! You weren’t supposed to tell them we were goofing off! I though we had discussed that you would spin it as an anti-writer’s block exercise, you know, like singers do vocal warm-ups. Jeez!
I’m glad you guys enjoyed our silliness. Now I have to get back to work. Here I go.
Ranger Journal Sept 30, 2009
Posted on September 30th, 2009 at 12:27 pmJust checked out Jill’s blog. The chicks totally dig me. Planning on printing these responses and ‘leaving them out’ where Steph will find them. A little competition never hurt anyone. I hope the Morelli fans who haven’t read past book 3 plan on reading books 7 through 12. I can make them forget Morelli.
Amanda says:
Sorry to hear about kate. Love Mand x

Love the journal entries. They’re exactly what I needed this afternoon. Laughter definitely makes the time at work go by faster.
My favorite character of all time is probably Anne Shirley from the Anne of Green Gables series. I doubt any journal entry I write will be as funny as yours, but I’ll try anyway.
Anne’s journal entry:
Posted on September 30th, 2009 at 2:19 pmGilbert Blythe strikes again! I don’t know what it is about that boy but I simply can’t stand him. Carrots, indeed! Well, I’ll show him. He thinks he’s so smart, but I’ll get better marks than him and then we’ll see who’s better. He and that annoying Josie Pye belong together. *shudder*
Barbara says:
Your blog entries for Ranger are too funny. Gave me a smile.
Gregory House journal September 28, 2009
Well after 5 years of giving the public a view into my very private world I have now just spent several months in the looney bin…umm psycatriac hospital after weeks of seeing my best friend’s girlfriend everywhere I went. I have changed my pill popping ways and convinced the head looney um director of the hospital that I deserve to be released.
Only thing is I don’t think I can practice medicine anymore without popping pills for my leg pain so I have quit being a dr. The head looney says I should write my feelings down and try to share them with others and that I need to develop a new hobby. I have taken up cooking which I obsess about for a while…become quite good at it if I do say so myself.
I have to confess that I have cheated a bit with the Dr thing though. You see I went on the internet and it seems that my moron lackey former employees have a new case. This guy must not trust their diagnosis because he keeps posting symptoms on the net and asking for DR’s in cyberspace to solve his case. What’s a genious like me to do??? I solved the case and now I have to explain this $25,000 check I have for solving it to the head looney.
Now the head looney is telling me that maybe I can practice medicine afterall. So we will see what the future brings. Personally I don’t think writing any of this down is going to help in any way at all.
I must admit though that I am a bit anxious to get back to the hospital where I can see Cutty everyday though. some say that deep down I am in love with her…not sure if that is right or not but I sure do like to cause havic in her life…same with my lackeys Foreman, Chase and Cameron. Everyone keeps telling me that I need to change and grow but does anything ever really change? Guess you will have to tune in tomorrow for my next entry.

Arizona Snow journal entry (from Running Hot):
Posted on September 30th, 2009 at 5:51 pmI can’t believe those J&J and Arcane people still haven’t figured it out! I must be doing a great acting job! I’m not the real Arizona Snow! She’s my grandmother who raised me. I guess they thought she was so crazy they didn’t know she was raising her only living family member. Little did they know the craziness was just a cover for her covert work with the society. HA! They are so blind! Grandma is in the assisted living place under an assumed name. She believes she’s on another secret mission. The journals grandma wrote have been invaluable for my “being” her. But the best journals are of her sex life! Grandma you know how to party and rock it! If I could only try half of what you did….I’d be one happy woman! Really need to find a man to try out those journal entries! There’s that Fallon Jones, but he’s SO work obsessed, unfriendly, uptight and stressed out. Hmmmm…maybe great sex would loosen him up and put a smile on his sour face. Let’s see….maybe I should tell him I’m a stripper with a minor psychic talent….yah….maybe that would get him interested in some good old fashioned great sex! Now where did grandma put that stripper pole of hers?
Diana says:
I’ve heard of these popular Stephanie Plum books, but have never read them. Jill, your Ranger journal entries have definitely made me more interested in giving these books a try.
