Tonsil Thursday

September 10, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff

Every hour or so, the nurse would ask Oldest, fresh from a tonsillectomy, to rate her pain. She’d hold up six fingers and she’d get meds, the good stuff.

No one ever asked me, not once the whole day …

I’m at an EIGHT. Just FYI …

And since I have no cookies, no chips, a dying computer battery, and so much work I’m drowning in it, I could use an IV of morphine myself. Not that anyone is asking …

    Hi :)
I’m glad everything went well with your oldest.
As a parent I’ve had to watch & visit my children in the hospital and it hurts to see them there.
Sending you and yours love & best wishes,
    @RKCharron
    xoxo

  2. Judy F says:

ah poor oldest. I hope she is better soon.

Hope the cookie fairies hear you too.

  3. Stacy ~ says:

I didn’t realize that getting your tonsils out was quite that painful…for Oldest or for mom :( Hope ice cream is helping and that she’s feeling better, and that mom gets some TLC too. Hugs, Jill.

  4. Dru says:

    {{{Oldest}}} I hope she’s feeling better soon. {{{Jill}}}

  5. Pat L. says:

Ahh, poor kid. Hope she is better very soon and Mommy too. How is AM holding out?

  6. Kim says:

    (((Hugs))) to you both.

Uh, from a daughter’s perspective, it’s cruel and unusual punishment to post that photo! LOL.

  7. tennismom says:

I’m too busy laughing to feel sorry for you. You’re at an eight LOL. Should I remind you that this is easier than labor – remember that?

  8. Ashley says:

Aww, poor thing, I hope she’s feeling better.
    And you too Jill!

  9. trish c says:

Shame on that hospital. Not offering you pain meds. I love that chart. The faces crack me up!!!

Megan is in the hospital this week having testing on her heart. I am going to see her today. So far, fingers crossed she is kicking butt and taking names.
    Well see…..
I hope you are at least getting plenty of ice cream. I don’t like seeing oldest in a hospital bed. Tell her I said to get better soon.

  10. Kristina says:

Oh so sad! At least you get your peaceful quiet baby back for a few hours…. maybe days.. Good luck with everything!

  11. Liza says:

Hope Oldest feels better soon. Maybe they would give you some ice cream to make you feel better since morphine isn’t on your menu.

  12. Amanda says:

Awww she looks so poorly… hope she’s on the mend real soon xxx

  13. Donna M says:

    Love the pain chart!

Oldest looks remarkably good for someone in the hospital. Hope she is home & feeling much better very soon. Jill, this just reminds us all that no matter how old your children get they are always your babies! Mine are both in their 40′s but they are still my little girls! Grown up, doing great but I’m still their Mom.

Hang in their Jill. Maybe Alpha Man could get you some cookies.

  14. Brandy says:

You are making me nervous. I have to do this with a fourteen year old in late November! Hugs! I hope BOTH of you are feeling better soon.

  15. sls-rainey says:

yikes! She’s going to hurt you when she sees the photo. Hey, you could always hide her in the bathroom and take her place, maybe then they will give you the meds.

  16. Karin says:

I hope Oldest has a quick recovery so you can recover quickly, too.

  17. SonyaM says:

Poor Jill & Oldest — keeping the whole family in my prayers.

  18. Diana says:

    Hope Oldest feels better soon!

  19. Allie says:

The poor thing! I hope her return to college does not give her swine flu on top that. It would just not be fair. Does she know you took that picture?? :) I will send her get-well-soon vibes.

  21. Ang says:

OH..my..I hate that pain scale chart. I had to deal with it last week when I was in the hospital. Glad no one took a pic of me while I was there…

Hope oldest is doing better. Cookies for everyone!

  22. JL says:

I hate that pain chart too. I spent a week in the hospital back in July after a pretty serious car wreck (still not fully recovered, either), and they lived and breathed by that thing in both hospitals I was in. Thank you, yes, ER nurse, my pain is a 7. I think. After surgery to put my ankle back together? A solid 9. If not a 10. How on earth are you supposed to quantify pain like that? The ER’s 7 was nothing compared to the post-surgery bone pain that was horrible. That much difference in two whole numbers? Yeesh.

On the plus side, I did get in the local papers as a result of the accident. Front page, above the fold, no less. But they didn’t mention my name, so it probably doesn’t count. Spiffy picture of the wreck, though.

For the record, though, I was on morphine, and I hated it. Give me demerol any day. Had that after my planned surgery back in March, and fell in love.

I’m sure Oldest is on the mend now, but sorry she had to go through that!
