Sending out an SOS

September 2, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff

Okay, I need some research help on a couple of different things. I am shooting a hero. With a gun. Nope, not going to tell you which one, sorry but I’m just a big tease today. I’m not going to kill him, no worries, but I could use some help from a nurse or doctor for the ER protocol and correct wording, and also from an EMT, someone who would know the at the scene stuff.

Also, I have another character who is a detective at his local police department. So anyone who could help me with daily job stuff on that …

And lastly, I have a pastry chef heroine. Now I know I love desserts, but that’s about all I know. Anyone know some fancy stuff that could give me a behind the scenes at the kitchen level? Or anyone with running a pastry shop experience …

So. That’s what I’m up to. How about you?

  1. Wendy says:

I’m a nurse so I might be able to help. :)

  2. Stacy ~ says:

Sorry Jill, can’t help you there, but if it means anything, I’m a huge fan of desserts *g*

  3. Pat L. says:

Desserts, sounds good to me. Add some chocolate to the story.

  4. Ashley says:

fondant! You can’t use a huge slab and you have to use frosting as a ‘glue’. (OK, so I was watching the Big Cake Off and saw a guy have his cake literally fall apart because his fondant was too big…) I’d recommend “Cake Boss” or one of those other shows..

  5. Melinda says:

My husband is a Deputy Chief. Has been a police officer for over 15 years. I’d be happy to loan him to you. ; )

  6. Samantha says:

    Jill,
I’m a dispatcher for a police department. I could possibly help you out or ask some of our detectives for info. I know when I’m working our detectives are always asking us to run criminal histories for them. Basically that’s finding out everything a suspect has been arrested for or done jail time for. I also run driver’s license histories on suspects and do other research as needed. If I can help in any way let me know.

    Samantha

  7. Ashley says:

Sorry, I’m no help in any of these areas.
Today I’m working on a big stack of accounts payables and receivables and a deposit. If only the deposit were mine personally!!
    Good luck with your research!

  8. Liza says:

Sorry, I’m no help in any of these areas. However, I do love dessert and am pretty good with baking cakes.

  9. D says:

Sorry, no help here. I am willing to sample pastries, at nearby bakeries(are you impressed with the sacrifice I’m willing to make for you(lol)). Good luck with your research. You might try emailing chefs from the food network.

  10. Tracy S says:

I’d love to help you, but I know nothing about those areas.

But if you need help on what it’s like to be a teacher (former job) or an admin. assistant for Pastors (current job) I’m your person! LOL

Or, if you right a book on someone with OCD tendancies, I’ve got ya covered!

My hubby can help you with “a day in the life of…” a Children’s Pastor, a trucker, or an assembler at a transformer factory (yes, he’s had a variety of jobs!) ;-)

  11. Lori says:

I spent 10 years working ER and ICU. Let me know if I can help.

A pastry chef? I’m already gaining weight just thinking about it.

  12. sls-rainey says:

Good luck that’s alot of info to be researching.

  13. Kirsten says:

I love to cook and bake. I don’t have any professional training, but I do have a library full of baking recipes/cookbooks and techniques that I am familiar with. Let me know if I can help.

  14. limecello says:

Ooo I’m a hobby-ish baker, am obsessed with cooking etc- and one of my best friends just went to culinary school, focusing on pastries. I’d be more than happy to help out in any way I can.

And… a number of my friends have finished their ER rotations, but I’m sure other commenters here can be more helpful. Haha. I’m so useless *sniff*

  15. Donna M says:

Wow, there is a lot of talent here with your fans Jill. A book with a pastry chef, I can’t wait.  A hero that gets shot, oh no!

The Food Network would be good to watch to pick up lingo & prep also they have the Food Network website for recipes and I think there are some video’s on the website. I love to cook, bake (mostly cookies) but I am a rank amateur but would be more than happy to help you in any way. Is there a good bakery (not a chain, local)in your town? If so you might be able to talk to someone there for info. I am in touch with a Chef that I saw on a TV program out of San Francisco. I’ll email you his website that has a way to contact him. His Chocolate Chip cookie recipe is now the only one I use & he has tried out to be the next big Food Network Star. He won’t know if he made it to be a contestant until October. He seems to be very nice always answers me when I email him. That impresses the heck out of me!

  16. tennismom says:

So anytime you’re ready to write about a tennis player I’m there for you LOL. Otherwise I’m just visiting.

  17. Christina T. says:

my husbnd is a FF/Paramedic so if you have a list of questions or I can send you his email address. He would be happy to answer questions

  18. Brandy says:

I can’t help……. darnit! But, you have my interest that’s for sure. Can’t wait to hear where this story is going!

  19. Amy M says:

I am not a pastry chef, but I LOVE to bake. There is pretty much nothing that I will not try to make.

As far as the hospital stuff, well, I have spent TONS of time in a hospital, either for myself or taking care of my kids or mom. But, I am no doctor. I did take some medical classes. I might be of, well, a small bit of help in that area. Looks like you have some who might be really helpful though!

  20. Allie says:

Can’t help, but I can’t wait to read it…

All I know about pastry is that I can only make a decent pie crust by using my food processor. All else fails miserably.

I’m a medical transcriptionist, but by the time they get around to dictating, all the exciting stuff is over, although the amusements (for the MT, anyway) have just begun: “I asked the patient why he had a gunshot wound and he said he did not know.” My favorite was the female doctor who broke out into giggles while dictating about the “incident” with the vacuum a male patient had. And here I thought that was just an urban myth. Seriously. You can’t top a doctor for unintended humor. Especially a resident whose first language is not English.

  21. Tabitha K. says:

I’m not much help either! Let me know if you ever need information from a first grade teacher!

  22. Lys says:

    Hey Jill:

What would you like to know about a Pastry Chef? I´m a chef maybe I could help you.

Donna M is right Food Network will help you a lot.

    Let me know.

    Take care

  23. KimberlyH says:

I cant really help out in anyway but I am excited to read the final results! lol :)

  24. JenF says:

My hubby’s a firefighter, but in this town that means they do all the paramedics, so they go to all the vehicle accidents and take care of the people until one of the hospital’s ambulances come for transport. He could help with some of it. Course if you ever need more firefighter help for another book, he’d be more than willing to help! He said that, not me! :)

  25. Lisa says:

I’m an intensive care nurse and have friends who work in our trauma center, if that can be any help to you.

(Thanks for researching. It drives me nuts to read a book that has improbable medical events in them!)

  26. Jeannemarie says:

Hi, My husband is an author, Police Lieutenant, former detective and emt. He has a writing serivce website for this stuff. You can visit his web site also at glennrambo.com. I love your books and blog. I hope this helps. Yes, that is his real name and I am Mrs Rambo. I tell everyone I married him for his name.
    I hope this helps
    Jeannemarie

  27. KearBear says:

you should look up Marilyn at the blog Simmer til Done
She was a pastry chef in another life.

  28. Joyce says:

Everyone gave such good suggestions. I enjoy watching the food network and they probably could help.
