Take Me Out To The Ball Game

July 6, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff

Thanks to Laurie D. for this gorgeous shot of my latest romance novel, Double Play, a book with a sexy MLB pitcher as the hero. It’s taken at The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, where the Reds played against the Cardinals this weekend. Pretty, isn’t it?

What did you all do this weekend? Here we ate, sunbathed, and watched fireworks. And then ate some more. I’d like to say I’m still full but that’d be a lie. I never seem to get full . . . this is a problem, since next week I’m heading to D.C. for a writer conference and it’d be good if I wasn’t busting out of my clothes at the seam. Especially since I’m going to being filmed for an interview for Borders.

Just typing that gave me an anxiety attack, lol. I’ll have to work on that before next week. Cookies should help. Anyone have any tips for looking calm and sophisticated and elegant on TV, especially when you’re none of those things?

    Hi :)
Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a terrific time at the RWA conference in DC. :)
About the TV interview: Aren’t you supposed to picture them in their underwear?

Isn’t that what they have interviewers for? To help people relax and feel comfortable? Oh well, I’d say that make sure you have a comfortable chair to sit in. Lean back a little, that makes people think you are calm and sophisticated. Leaning forward makes you look nervous. Do NOT move around. Fidgeting = big no-no. :) What helps me is to speak as slow as I possibly can manage since I tend to speak faster and faster when nervous, which means that if I try to speak slowly, then my speech comes out normal-speed. Did that make any sort of sense?

As for what I did this weekend, It was my birthday yesterday so I overdosed on sweet, fat foods like cake and pizza. If you need me I’ll be holed up in my comfy chair with a vat of tea and those nice books I got for the next two weeks or so. :)

It was kinda gloomy here all weekend. Friday I watched Fireworks in the park across the street from my apt. Sat, cleaned most of the day then went shopping. Sunday watched my hometown Reds get their butts kicked on TV. It was sad…

Don’t have any advise on the interview, I hate them.

But I loved loved loved loved…. Double Play read it yesterday… Great job…

  4. Liza says:

I spent the weekend at the pool and reading. Our fireworks pretty much got rained out on Saturday, but had a great weekend anyway. I went looking for Double Play over the weekend and finally ordered it yesterday so I know I’ll have it by Tuesday.

I hate speaking in front of people, so I don’t know what to tell you about the interview. Maybe eat some cookies before and after the interview.

  5. Dru says:

I have no advice other than to say just be yourself.

I went to the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest – it was fun and then watched fireworks.

  6. D says:

Don’t worrry about the interview, just be yourself, remember that without you, they’d have no one to interview and would be out of work(sounds good anyway). I’m still recovering from the 4th. We have an over the top block party. Tons of food, plenty of booze, loud music and fireworks. Finally ended the night at 4am. We’re loud, obnoxious and a hell of alot of fun..

  7. Laurie says:

Good luck with the interview, Jill!

Our fourth turned out to be rather uneventful, but it was nice to relax at home. We’re on vacation this week but don’t have any big plans, just a few day trips.

Dru, we watched that hot dog eating contest on TV – the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen! How fun to be there in person though, with all of those excited spectators!

  8. Pat L. says:

Good luck with your interview. I know you will do fine.

Guess what book I picked up this weekend. Cant wait to sit down with Double Play.

  9. Ashley says:

Good luck with the interview! We know you will do great!
I spent the long weekend at the lake, fishing, playing in the water and working on my tan! I’m sad that it’s over and I’m back at work.

  10. Elen says:

Yes. More cookies. I posted a hot little cookie you might like. In fact, I should have dedicated that post to you. lol Can’t wait to read Double Play.

  11. Allie says:

I read Double Play and Instant Gratification this weekend, keeping my dogs company inside while we waited out the endless fireworks. Both books were good, but Double Play was outstanding. I also made peanut butter ice cream, which is wonderful with chocolate syrup…

  12. Terri Schaefer says:

If it’ll help, you and I can sneak away for some cookies before the interview!

  13. tennismom says:

Just be marvelous you. You’re the draw. Remind yourself how funny & charming you are. In the middle of DP & loving it. I LOVE the baseball quotes that start each chapter. I’ve used the quote from A League of Their Own “there’s no crying in” whatever situation we’re in many times. Love the excerpt from the next book (it’s the first thing I looked for but no pressure LOL!)

  14. Donna M says:

Jill, how exciting that you are going to be interviewed at Border’s. Be yourself, you are funny and so nice. Remember to take a deep breath just before the interview starts and think of something that makes you feel good–cookies maybe!! Is it going to be something we will get to see?

I’m reading Instant Gratification, enjoying it a bunch. I have less than 100 pages to read. Next time I get a chance I will be looking for Double Play.

  15. Brandy says:

We babied a sick kitten and set off fireworks after grilling kabobs. It was a pretty nice weekend and so far the kitten is on the mend!

  16. Barbara says:

Picked up Double Play this past weekend. It’s next up to read. Haven’t seen Instant Gratification in the stores yet but I am on the look out for it.

  17. Susan says:

It rained on and off here. We did see the neighbor’s fireworks, they went all out this year!

Jill, you will do fine by being your friendly self!

  18. Diane W says:

Maybe you need the proper motivation for the interview. Try this: The better the interview, the more books sold. The more books sold, bigger paycheck. Bigger paycheck, the more cookies you could buy. You could even get the large family sized bag! ‘Nough said.

  19. Fedora says:

Awesome photo, Laurie and Jill! I’m sure you’ll look and sound spectacular on TV, but as I am completely struck dumb with stage fright in any even vaguely similar circumstances, I’ve got no good advice! Pay a stunt double? ;p Seriously, you’re going to be amazing!

  20. trish c says:

My weekend… hmmm worked Saturday night. It was slow so I read Instant Gratification which I bought specially for this night. It was a warm, wonderful story with many lol moments. I think people were wondering what I was up to im my cubby!!!

Sick on Sunday, back to work on Monday.
Happy B-day to hubby. He turned 53 yrs young today..

  21. kh says:
