The donkey slippers
March 23, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff
I had to run to McDonalds. It was a Big Mac emergency. I’ve been on deadline, which means I was in my pj’s still, and my donkey slippers. Yes, they make donkey slippers. Really. Anyway, when I got there, the drive-thru lane was under construction. Which means I had to go in.
Dilemma. I looked at myself in the rearview mirror. Scary hair. No makeup. And then there were the slippers . . . I took a vote with my brain and my stomach, how bad did we need that Big Mac? My stomach voted twice, so I ran inside.
My daughter’s teacher was in line in front of me. She eyed my slippers while pretending to study the floor, but didn’t say a word. The guy behind me works at the bank. He was pretending not to eye the slippers too.
Then my friend came in, gave me a look over and cracked up. “You are such a writer.”
Everyone laughed and suddenly it was okay to look at my slippers. I didn’t know how to tell them that I’d have had this embarrassing moment with or without being a writer … But hey, if it excuses me in some way, I’m all for it.

Oh Jill… Did your family find out???
Cute slippers..
Me I would have driven to another McDonalds if one was in town. LOL

Never fails. If you don’t look your best and would rather not see anyone you know – that’s when you see everyone you know. But hey, they probably just think you’re an eccentric writer.

I give, your donkeys win. The best I could do would be orange and white polka dots with gold glitter ballet slippers. Dang, I gotta try harder at this writer business.
Posted on March 23rd, 2009 at 4:24 amP.S. Where did you find donkey slippers?
Ang says:
I absolutely love those slippers! Love Shrek. Wonder how many people in line wished THEY were wearing those slippers and could be a great writer like you???

Love the slippers Jill! When I was still living with a couple of roommates, we would go to Walmart in our bunny slippers and pj pants.

Love the slippers.
Posted on March 23rd, 2009 at 6:09 amI used to have some Bugs Bunny ones and some that looked like cows. But yours are the bestest!
I’ve never been brave enough to leave the house in mine though.

Isn’t that always the way? Nice self-confidence! Was the Big Mac worth it? It usually is.

Terry L, yep those are “the” stairs. Which reminds me I should post a picture of them this week …

OMG I love it. A woman after my own heart. Stomach rules when it’s hungry.
A few years ago, about 10+, I gathered by 8 year old up and off we headed to the grocery store. Now mind you that store was a 15 mile drive. Halfway there I looked down and realized I still had on my bright yellow big bird slippers.
I did not turn around and go home. My daughter was mortified. I was comfortable.

Loved this! At least you didn’t have rollers in your hair. You didn’t have rollers in your hair, did you, Jill?
Posted on March 23rd, 2009 at 7:27 amJill says:
I don’t own rollers. And anyway, to have had rollers in my hair would have meant that I was attempting to improve on myself, and trust me, I hadn’t gone there that day.

I was driving around with my daughter the other day and we decided we wanted to look at a model home. I pulled up in front then took an appearance survey: torn t-shirt, stained pants, pink ugly slippers (oh, and the scary hair goes without saying). I didn’t go in. I just thought it would be too much of a “Clearly we are not buying the house – slap in the face.”

Well I live in a small town, guaranteeing I’m going to run into someone I know at every errand. Which means I should know better…

It never fails that you’ll run into someone you know in a small town!
That’s why I moved to a much larger one. No one knows me here. It’s great! Not that living in the small town stopped me from going to the store in my Hello Kitty pjs. One time when I was working nights, I went to my counselors appointment in my pjs and the counselor told me I was disrespectful to him and everyone around me when I did that. What a jerk. I never went back to him after that! And I still continue to wear my pjs into public places.

Karma…I live in a big town. Don’t see any one I know for months. Then never fails when I’m at my worse, or sick and feeling like crap, I’ll always run into someone I know. Someone who looks at me probably thinking, gee, she sure went downhill, wait til I let her ex know.

What’s the matter with Donkey Slippers?! My four year old son has them too. LMAO! Don’t worry, he wears them out too!!

At least you realized before you went in. It wasn’t wondering why everyone was looking at you funny until you found a mirror. (sigh) which is ussually my version of that scene.

I have missed your blog! I have been blog absent for quite some time now and am finally getting back into the swing of things. You’re my hero. I go out in my slippers all the time, unfortunately they’re not nearly as cute as yours. I love Donkey. He’s my favorite Shrek character…”are we there yet?…are we there yet?” LOL.
I go to the Starbuck’s drive thru dressed in my pjs, a hat and sunglasses all the time. They’re surprised if they see me in regular clothes.

The one time I wore my slippers into CVS (drive thru window malfunction), I ran into a client, a neighbor and a former classmate. I didn’t even tell my family – I could imagine their looks of horrified shame and decided to forego it.

Many years ago I went to work in my slippers, just normal slippers!! We lived about 15 miles away so no going back, I forgot I had them on, they were so comfy!! Lucky me, I had a pair of shoes at work. They sure did tease me when I first came into the place.

lol! donkey slippers! I love my bumble bee slippers – want to wash them some time…. [is that even possible?]
Posted on March 23rd, 2009 at 9:25 pmI was seriously contemplating wearing pajamas to my finals – because… this’ll be my 3rd degree, technically, and the last one I’ll ever have in my life! I deserve it, right?!
(With my luck I’ll run into the Dean. Or Provost. Or University President. Or a Federal District Judge.) … sigh. Maybe I’ll do it anyway.

Classic!
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 7:33 amI live in a small town now, and on a street that’s a common cut-through between two other major streets — I don’t know how many people have told me “oh, I saw you in your yard the other day!”
So I’m paranoid to go check my mail! lol But still go out in my PJ’s. Screw it.
