Double Play

February 5, 2009 | Filed under: Stuff

I’ve had emails asking what I’m working on. At the moment, it’s copy edits for DOUBLE PLAY coming July 7.

What I’ve got is a fictional major league baseball team, the Santa Barbara Heat. They’re an expansion team, three years old, and filled with talent. Which means big, bad, hot, sexy athletes. First up is Pace Martin, their ace pitcher, one of the best in the league. Here’s the two pages I’m editing right this minute:

“I figure the price for this abduction should fit the crime.”

Pace took his eyes off the road and glanced at the reporter in his passenger seat. She wasn’t beautiful. Irritating people couldn’t be beautiful, not in his opinion, and all reporters were irritating. Besides, she was too . . . careful looking. Yeah. That was it. She wore . . . efficient business clothes over some more than decent curves — which he happened to be a sucker for — but there was that whole annoyance factor. She had light brown hair carefully pulled back, matching light brown eyes that carefully saw everything, and a careful smile she’d attempted to manipulate him with.

He figured that was standard reporter issued.

He wondered if it gave her a headache, all that carefulness. She was certainly giving him a damn headache, and given the pain he was fighting in his shoulder, that was saying something. “Abduction?”

“Yes, that’s what it’s called when one person takes another against their will.“

He shot her a long look. “I offered you two thousand dollars and you jumped into this car so fast my head spun.”

“Well, you were combining my two favorite things. Money, and getting my interview.”

“I never promised you the interview.”

“It was implied,” she said sweetly.

Ha! If she was sweet, he’d eat his shorts.

I’m off now to finish. I had a doctor’s appointment this week and had to get on the scale. If I hadn’t had to do that, I’d be finishing this edits with an entire box of cookies. But the scale was not my friend so I’m eating carrots.

Carrots suck.

Oh, wow Jill, this sounds awesome. Sounds like Pace is going down hard. Can’t wait!

Carrots huh? Maybe you could drizzle some chocolate on them. Dark chocolate has health benefits, or so I hear.

  2. Tabitha says:

I like this. If you have any more edits that you want to run by us, please do not hesitate. ^_^

  3. Judy F says:

oh I like it a lot. Hugs on the carrots

  4. Pat L. says:

Can’t wait for this one. Love the cover, love baseball stories. Don’t know how I can wait til July.

Pace is the Ace, huh? LOL.

  5. Liza says:

I can’t wait to read Double Play! Sorry about the carrots.

  6. Robin says:

Oh, I cannot wait to read this!! Thanks for sharing a sneak peek!

  7. sls-rainey says:

Compared to cookies, carrots do suck. The only thing in common is the starting letter.

I enjoy the sneak peeks you give us…but well they kind of torture me too. I want to know what happens next. So put down the carrots :whip: and get back to work.

  8. Christina T. says:

This sounds like another good one!! I know about the carrots my dad is a chiropractor/acupuncturist/nutrionist and we are doing a detox right now!! Fruits, veggies and protiens shakes for me for 21 days. :hissyfit:
So far I have lost 1 pants size in one week, so the program has it benefits! Cood luck

  9. Amy says:

Hmmm, do you need a cold read, maybe? Possibly? I would GLADLY volunteer to read THE WHOLE THING and see if you missed anything. Or the copy editor missed anything. You know, ’cause I’m a giver, that’s why.

Sorry you have to console yourself with carrots and not cookies. But when you and the scale have made nice again, perhaps it will let you have a cookie or three.

  10. SonyaM says:

Ah…Baseball. Baseball is the one sport for which I suspect a woman designed the uniform. Tight pants – no pads. Ooh La La I’m sure you will have several great stories with the Heat!

  11. Jackie C says:

Is that going to be the final cover art? Yummy

  12. Ashley says:

You can’t give us a teaser this soon, we have too long to wait to get the rest of it!! lol
Good luck with the carrots – you could try drinking nothing but water and cutting back on portions and still eat your cookies. It worked for me, I lost 30 lbs. (And I DON’T exercise, I’m too lazy for that!!)

  13. Jill D says:

Yummy on the cover art not so much the carrots unless they are Cracker Barrel “sweet” baby carrots and they probably aren’t any better for you than cookies! Enjoyed the sneak peek.

  14. Victoria says:

This book’s gonna be awesome! Can’t wait til it comes out. :bananadance:

  15. trish c says:

I would kill for a cookie. I’m am dieting and it’s going alright I guess, except for the whole cookie thing. Carrots, yuck! Not even to lose weight. Cover is good and the story sounds good so far. Can’t wait for summer!

  16. Donna M says:

What a tease! This looks like another good read Jill. July, huh, seems far away at the moment! Good luck with the editing. Good cover art, looking at that has no calories!!

My doctors scales were not kind either! I’m trying very hard to be good but it is not easy. I am eating more fruits for snacks, also raw almonds are a really good snack that is healthy. I did give in to a craving for Peanut M&M’S!! What can I say!!

  17. limecello says:

I love carrots! I… might like carrots more than cookies O_o but… not more than cake. Man I love cake :D

  18. Tracy S says:

    I love baseball themed books!!

  19. Susan says:

Did you write a scene where he is eating his shorts? I’m adding this book to my list!

On the plus side, carrots are suppose to be good for your eyes.

  20. Jill says:

I gave up on the carrots.

  21. Brandy says:

Pace sounds as though he has a good story. *G* If I had a choice between cookies and carrots, I’d rather have one cookie than 10 carrots. *G*

  22. Karin says:

Good luck with the edits! The story sounds great!

  23. Lisa Freeman says:

I just want the guy on the cover to turn around! And I love to munch on carrots – the small baby ones are pretty sweet tasting.

  24. april says:

I actually put peanut butter on my carrots. It turns off my entire family.

I love reading about athletes which is funny because I hate sports.

I can’t wait though I would prefer to get through Instant Attraction first. It’s very entertaining so far. If I do mad cleaning today for the inlaws coming over tomorrow, I can reward myself with some more reading. I need to convince the inlaws that we don’t live like pigs and our house can be clean. It’s going to take a lot of convincing and divine intervention. I’ve skipped cookies and went onto candy.

  25. kh says:

love the cover love sports and romance. congrats :bananadance:
