Monday Muses

August 25, 2008 | Filed under: Stuff

I’m sitting cross-legged on the bed trying to come up with a blog. The bed is huge but I don’t have enough space. I have Mountain Barbie on my feet, Ashes on my side and the silly cat in my lap fighting for space with my laptop. (I do realize this picture doesn’t match what I’m talking about, but hey, I’m a little ADD and a whole lot unorganized, and besides, I do have a point that I’ll eventually get to).

Anyway, the cat. She’s totally in the way, batting at my fingers, the keys, DRIVING ME CRAZY, and then suddenly she starts to wash her face. Specifically behind her ears. It’s a stretch for her, and she’s not very good at it, and her paw sort of catches on her ear every time, and she gets all annoyed at herself, and . . .

And it makes my heart melt. Every single time. I have no idea why, really, it’s just one of those inexplicable personal things that warm me from the inside out. Sort of like sunflowers and a powder snow day and a brand new pen. And clouds. Goodness, I LOVE clouds.

Oh, and cookies! Cookies most definitely warm my heart.

So here’s what I’m wondering. What’s your watching a cat wash her ears? What’s your powder day? What’s your cloud?

Go.

  1. Stacy ~ says:

Baby bunnies and baby ducklings, who show up every spring at the campus where I work and I get to watch grow up all summer.

Getting my hands on that most anticipated book. Haagen Daz’s Sticky Toffee Pudding ice cream. Taking naps. Lilacs in the spring. Hugs from a child.

For a Monday, it’s starting out to be a pretty good day :)

  2. Samantha says:

Seeing my boyfriend’s roommate’s dog try to give my boyfriend a kiss everytime he falls asleep laying on the couch. The dog’s head is perfectly level with his head and before I know it I see a cold nose nudge to the cheek and a big *slurp* somewhere on his face. That always makes me laugh and smile.

  3. Cheryl M. says:

Mine is watching my daughters sleeping after a long day filled with playing hard, fighting, temper tantrums
and girly giggles. When I watch their sweet expressions and hear their little snores it reminds me that they are growing up so fast and makes me appreciate everything about them even more ( even the temper tantrums!)

  4. Dee says:

I love to watch my children love on our dog, Coco. Michael was afraid of her when he came home last year – he had never seen an 8 lb. dog in Kazakhstan. now they are best buddies and he rubs her tummy. My daughter cuddles her like a baby and talks to her. It’s so adorable.

  5. Gail says:

    I’m a cloud watcher too.

  6. Nancy says:

The bunnies sitting on our wet grass.
    A nap in the sun.
The kitten chasing the shadows on the floor.

  7. Ashley says:

When my 3 yo is coloring a picture for me, he concentrates so hard he puckers his lips out and wrinkles his nose, it is the cutest thing, I can’t help but laugh!!

  8. Moonlissa says:

My dog Sadie is a rescue and incredibly people shy. Whenever she allows a new person near her I just hold my breath until I see if she will let them pet her. Everytime she takes a new step it makes me feel like this :bananadance:

  9. Carol says:

I love sports and especially baseball. So everytime I see one of those big hunky players reach over and hand a baseball to a kid sitting in the stands it melts my heart. That kid will remember that moment forever.

  10. Casee says:

Hearing my kids belly laugh. Gets me everytime.

  11. Jill Shalvis says:

Aw, some really great ones. I want to add the way my kids look when they first wake up, faces smashed, hair wild, and so sweet I could just gobble ‘em up.

Also husbands who aren’t necessarily romantic but who fill up my car with gasoline 99% of the time, just so I don’t have to.

  12. Elizabeth K says:

Every time my cantankerous orange cat (Edd) decides it’s time for another lovefest with the dog (Bart). Edd will stretch and yawn and pad on over to his unsuspecting victim and start rubbing. Purring. Rubbing some more, purring louder, totally into the moment… and there’s the poor dog, frozen in place, staring at me like “HELP GET HIM OFF ME AAAAHHH!!!” But he puts up with it, and since it’s the only time I ever hear Edd purr, I just smile and enjoy it.

  13. Allie says:

Watching my two dogs play The Teeth Game.

Watching my hamsters sleep on a really hot day. They spread out to cool off and turn into little hamster puddles.

  14. Donna M says:

A babies smile or laughter, any of my grandchildren giving me a hug, every time I see the ocean.

Great way to start our Monday Jill. Thanks. I love to watch coulds also, they are endlessly interesting.

  15. april says:

I love kids with animals. The baby was petting my mom’s kitty last week and it was the cutest thing. She had never really seen a kitty and the cat is evil (to anyone over 3) so it was sweet to see them have a moment. The cat’s not mean just a brat.

I love belly laughs of any kind. Something infectious about a guffaw.

I get all warm and mushy (which doesn’t happen often) when the baby gets sleepy, too. Not the crying, cranky sleepy, but the curl up in your arms sleepy. She’s not a cuddly baby so it’s nice when she grabs you and puts her head on your shoulder. Then, to calm herself down, she runs her fingers through her hair until she falls asleep. It’s the cutest thing ever. And, yes, for a (almost) 10-month old, her hair is crazy long. I’m not even a baby person, but they’re cute buggers.

Oh and that smell of yummy food cooking always makes me happy especially if I’m not the one cooking it.

  16. limecello says:

Waking up, knowing I have nothing to do, and that the house is entirely clean.
This will never happen, but it’s a nice dream. Maybe some day.

  17. Liza says:

I love hearing my 4 year old niece laugh. It is one of those deep belly laughs and makes you want to laugh too. The best is when she tells me she loves me just out of the blue. I love afternoon naps and watching NFL football(Go Titans!).

I’m also completely addicted to the oreo cake cookies and they always make me smile.

  18. Susan says:

Watching my cats wash their faces, mama deers keeping a close eye on their little ones and watching elderly couples walking and holding hands.

  19. Cryna says:

Getting surprise hugs and kisses from my Grandchildren. Watching them sleep at night after a hard day.

  20. kristen says:

Seeing my old cat stretched out in his sphynx look and his nose buried between his paws.
Seeing my Cavalier come in damp and swim-swimming across the floor.
Seeing my two kids laugh themselves silly over something to stupid but it’s too contagious.

Just a few things on a rainy day while avoiding rabid dust bunnies lurking in every dark corner.

  21. Hélène says:

When my 5 five yr old niece comes over and asks me to please braid her hair. And afterwards she grabs me by the neck and says “thank you” in a very soft voice, as if to say this was “our” special moment.

Love having my cat stretch on her back underneath my computer chair, and having her paws touch my ankles. She does that every night.

  22. Judy F says:

My cat Sammy attack a toy from across the room. Makes me laugh every time. Also him looking out the window and watching the birds.

Lately its been my 18 month old great niece. She loves giving hugs and kisses. Makes my entire day.

  23. JL says:

Just when the nieces (3 & 21-mo-old twins) are about to make me smash my last marble to bits, one of them demands “kiss!” And it becomes an event for everyone.

When any of my nieces come barrelling at me for a hug.

When the twins abandon their favorite uncle to come lean on me instead.

Hearing the twins call me by name (this is new), even if their J’s sound more like D’s. And knowing they said my name before Hubby’s (unlike their sister, who mastered Hubby’s simple-vowel-sound name first, before tackling my triphthong one).

When the 3-y-o saw me give a classic Migraine Salute one day, and asked if I was crying, I said no; I just have a headache. She cheerily announced, “I kiss it!”

When Hubby brings me home french fries because I’ve had a tough day.

When any of my cats curl up next to me as if I’m the most important being in their world. Happens far too infrequently.
