Oh no she DIDN’T

June 2, 2008 | Filed under: Stuff

So normally Mountain Barbie goes to work every day with Alpha Man. She’s a job dog. She guards his truck (read: she licks anyone who comes close), she guards the job site (read: she chews on the tools) and keeps things in control (read: she naps most of the day). But when Alpha Man was laying out some wood flooring last week, she was stuck home with me after chewing up some very expensive wood and being kicked off the job.

The first morning, I was upstairs cleaning up a little bit before diving into the writing when I realized that she was too quiet. This is never a good sign. Not once has it worked out where she was quiet for a GOOD reason. I went to the top of the stairs to peek down and saw something suspicious on my couch.

What the heck? I zoomed in. That can’t be . . .

Oh, but it was. She’d helped herself to the couches and was taking a nice snooze. ON THE COUCH. I said “Mountain Barbie! What do you think you’re doing?” And she opened exactly one eye and said “aren’t we on vacation today?”

  1. Judy F says:

She was comforting herself after getting fired. Poor baby. LOL I was worried she had chewed up your couch

  2. Stacy ~ says:

I’m with Judy, I expected to see pillow stuffing scattered all over the floor. I am relieved to see Mountain Barbie was indulging in some obviously much needed R&R.

  3. Mental P Mama says:

I, too, was relieved to find the sofa intact. Mountain Barbie is the cutest! :bananadance:

  4. Laura says:

I just love that dog. And I agree with those that have said you’re lucky your couch is in one piece. I should email you a picture of my lovely chair (that I need to replace). You’ll go kiss the dog and thank her for only sleeping on the couch. :)

  5. Suzanne says:

Looks good to me!!! LOL. How about your bed next time?

  6. OH-Ang says:

Lurker here. ..but I have been a huge fan since about 2003.

I am sure “MB” is either completely bummed about missing out on the fun with Alpha Male OR…she is trying to lull you into a false sense of security regarding your couch…

  7. Treasia Stepp says:

She’s drawing her severance pay through napping. :rotfl:

  8. Anne says:

I thought for sure you were going to say she chewed up the couch. LOL I’m glad she didn’t. And dang it all if she’ isn’t the cutest thing! She’s very sly (Read: Intelligent and sneaky) I like her style. LOL

  9. Dee says:

Aww! She looks right at home there! How did you coordinate the color of her fur so well with the furniture?!

  10. Ashley says:

Aww, she looks so sweet and innocent!! I think I’m actually jealous of MB, I want a vacation day on my couch all by myself!!
BTW, I love your wood floors.

  11. Hélène says:

Poor puppy. She looks so despondent. It’s as if she’s saying “nobody loves me anymore” Snif.

  12. Jill says:

Ashley, Alpha Man put those floors down PRE Mountain Barbie so she wasn’t able to eat any of THAT wood at least.

  13. Liza says:

Mountain Barbie looks so sweet. She makes me think of my dad’s lab. She used to own the sofa, but now he has a new one and she isn’t allowed on it.

  14. Lisa J says:

I can’t figure out all the fuss, I thought sofas were for the four legged memebers of the family??? You mean to tell me they aren’t? Good grief who knew!
RUDY, CALLIE, ZOE, we need to talk, and I’ll be right there soon as I get your bowl of warm milk!!!!

  15. Courtney says:

Mountain Barbie looks like a total love muffin. At least when she’s at rest.

  16. Ashley Elizabeth says:

How can you get mad at that face???? :rotfl:

  17. april says:

Aw, but she’s so cute and matches the couch so well. Plus, it does look like a comfy couch. Who can blame her? Maybe she’s just bummed out that she’s not getting attention all day… I mean, being useful and guarding the truck and jobsite.

  18. Jen(aside) says:

Is your living room always that clean or did you have to rush around and pick things up quietly before you took the picture? ;)

If it’s always that clean… Wow, I’m jealous.

  19. Jill says:

Jen, no I didn’t have to run around and do the cleanup thing. The living room doesn’t get too messy. The kitchen and den however? So not pretty.

  20. Robin says:

She is too cute for words! At least from my point of view.

  21. jean says:

She looks so comfortable. I was afraid she had eaten the couch. Let sleeping dogs lay or is it lie?

  22. Diana says:

Mountain Barbie is a cutie and looks like she deserves a vacation. ;)

  23. katie says:

your dog is so cute…what’s not to love?

  24. jeanne says:

How sweet – beats what my cats have done with their claws!

  25. Susan says:

My dog and two cats think all of the furniture in the house was put there for for their comfort!

  26. Brandy says:

Awww, she’s too cute! And yeah, at least she hasn’t clawed or chewed it up! *G*

  27. Jane says:

Mountain Barbie needs her beauty rest.

  28. Karin says:

Like some others, I was expecting to see a picture of destruction. It’s a good thing she was only sleeping on the couch and not doing anything else.

  29. Dru says:

LMAO..love the one eye open, like why are you bothering me. Too darn funny.

  30. Cindy says:

    Awwww, she’s so cute!

I also thought she had chewed on the couch. LOL So glad it wasn’t that!

  31. Amy L says:

    Jill,

How has your cat not chewed up the plant that is sitting on your coffee table?!?

My two cats chew any plant I have in the house, let alone down low on a coffee table!

  32. Jill says:

Sadie has a little balance problem and won’t jump up on tables, they scare her. I think it’s because she was rescued at two days old, starved nearly to death, but she never really developed her cat instincts. She believes she’s a dog.

  33. abby says:

Can I just say I’m really glad I found your blog! I’ve read several of your blaze books, but decided to check on your site today to see if there was more info on your firemen stories (saw them on Barnes and Noble). Anyway, you are HILARIOUS! I looked at a couple of your past blog pages, and you made me laugh a lot!

And your dog story makes me think of my lab when he was younger. My mom didn’t like him going on top of the couch, so she would always put the pillows down. But somehow, when we came back in the day, one of the pillows either landed on the floor, or it was slightly askew on the couch. My dad decided to set up a camcorder one day to film it, and we saw our dog approach the couch slowly after he knew we left, put his nose under the pillow, and push up. He did it a couple of times until it finally stood, and then backed up and jumped. He then landed gracefully on the couch, circled a couple of times like dogs always do then plopped down. The pillow fell on top of him, and then he happily slept. Then when he later got off, the pillow never fell back properly in place. That’s how the pillow gets askew. lol

Geez… my post is incredibly long!

  34. Jill says:

Abby, lol! Loved this. And welcome, btw . . .

  35. Cryna says:

When I first saw the pictures starting to unfold I thought MB had chewed on the couch. But to be curled up asleep is really cute. Glad that she was behaving, but then she had worked hard enough to be banned from the job site the day before. :rotfl: So she needed her beauty sleep.

  36. JillWD says:

Can I get you anything, Mountain Barbie? Extra pillows, biscuits, a beverage…? Looks like a scene at my house except your Lab and couch are much younger.

  37. Christina says:

:bananadance: I just have to say that you are lucky she didn’t tear it apart. I came into my bedroom one day after it was a little to quite, and found one of my three dogs had eaten my mattress. When I walked in she was hiding underneath the bed with stuffing in her mouth. She was however nice enough to pull the bedding onto the floor first so that it didn’t get ruined. It was just covered in hair, after she slept on it. Best of luck MB. Loved the new book! I enjoyed reading all three, but have to say this little twist threw me for a loop. Have a great summer.

  38. Casee says:

That is the cutest dog EVER!

Maybe she thought she’d blend in w/ the couch?

  39. big dog mom pam says:

 I was expecting you to say the couch was in shreds. I have an evil black lab that is up to no good when she’s quiet. You gotta love that face, though!
