“Mom, she’s looking at me!”

May 14, 2008 | Filed under: Stuff

I’ve been going through Mt. Everest of old photos, trying to remember who is who and what year and why I have a photo of my big toe circa 1992. It never fails, I get into the whole photo album thing with pictures carefully organized in piles all around me, and then I hear the patter of feet. “NO!” I yell as the dog comes chasing the cat towards me, scattering pictures everywhere. “NO!” I yell when Middle chases Youngest into the room, both ranting and raving about somebody breathing on somebody or another.

I have called Alpha Man three times today, each time asking the same question. “WHY DO WE HAVE KIDS AND/OR PETS?”

He calmly reminds me that it was all my idea, all of it, and I not so calmly remind him that he has learned nothing. His answer is supposed to be “It’s all my fault”. Always.

A little while ago, Middle came in and said she was VERY TIRED of Youngest, and I showed her this picture. Proof positive that once upon a time, they got along really well.

Alpha Man came home, looked at the picture and laughed. He has an entirely different memory associated with this pic, which is that two seconds after we took it, I turned away to answer the phone and when I turned back, Middle was walking down the hall, carrying Youngest like a basketball tucked up under arm.

I don’t have a picture of that, and maybe that’s for the best . . .

    ah what a sweet picture.

  2. Stacy ~ says:

Aw, they look so sweet. But in your family, I can see the basketball scenario very clearly…

  3. Kim A. says:

You’ll have your “revenge”: Remember the old Erma Bombeck book, “Just Wait Until You Have Children of Your Own?” :rotfl:

  4. Suzanne says:

    That is so adorable!!!

  5. Treasia Stepp says:

    How sweet they both are.

  6. lintys says:

Jill, that’s a beautiful moment between sisters. How fortunate to have been able to capture it in a photo.

My sister and I fought like cats when were kids. She’s my best friend, and has been, most of our adult lives. I’d have never believed that would happen if someone had predicted it when we teens.

  7. Melanie says:

Awwww!! The good thing about pictures is that we can look at them and remember when they couldn’t talk.

But where is the big toe picture? That’s not nice to tease like that! ;)

  8. Asthmagirl says:

As I was sitting in my closet looking at old pictures Sunday morning while my family slept, I had some of those same memories…
“Oh, how sweet” followed by “Crap, they got in a huge fight right after this was taken”!
It’s almost like, as a mom, we know exactly when to click the shutter!
I’ve resolved to organize my ‘bag ‘o pictures’ after the kids move out!

  9. Liza says:

What a sweet picture. My older sister and I fought all the time when we were growing up. Now we are best friends and talk all the time.

  10. Dee says:

The day I came home from the hospital my 3 year old brother sneaked into the nursery, climbed in the crib, climbed out with my tucked under his arm, and casually walked into the kitchen, causing my mother to nearly have a heart attack. I had been in the hospital in an incubator for the first 2 weeks of my life and weighed less than 5 lbs. and Mother had ticked off the doctors by leaving the hospital with me. Anyway, my brother and I got along great until I was big enough to steal his stuff… LOL

  11. Ashley says:

Such a cute pic, they are adoreable! My little one loves the camera, as soon as I pull it out he starts posing and saying “cheese”! (He loves to ham it up!)
Fortunately, my brother and I are 4 years apart so we got along great (most of the time; my mom used me as chaperon when he started driving, so I’m sure he tired of hearing the words “Take your sister” hollered at him as he tried to walk out the door!!!)

  12. Robin says:

And where did Middle learn to carry Youngest like a basketball?

I love looking at pictures of when my kids were young. Thanks for sharing yours and for never failing to make me smile on a daily basis.

  13. Jill says:

Robin, I always feel like thanking YOU guys for showing up every day. It means so much to have you all here!

  14. Susan says:

It seems to me that Alpha Man had some say in the matter of the kids at least! That is such a cute photo and funny story.

  15. april says:

Aw, too cute! It’s funny because the last photo I was viewing was my nephew kissing the baby. He hasn’t gotten into NOT liking her yet. The two of them absolutely love each other. It’s almost weird how much. It’s nice to see those moments of calm in between the chaos.

  16. Brandy says:

Didn’t Alpha want the puppy? Badly? *G* That picture is adorable. And so is the image of her carrying the baby like a basketball!

  17. jean says:

Isn’t it wonderful to look back at them when they were little? Back then they had little to say, little to do and best of all they had little problems. However, as they get bigger everything else gets bigger too.

  18. Ashley Elizabeth says:

That was a sweet picture. If only we all stay that sweet……

My mom has told me stories where when they brought my brother home from the hospital I wanted nothing to do with him. And after he was a few months old if he would cry or make a sound I would put a pillow over him or I would put him in the corner and put blankets over him. I wasn’t left alone with him for about a year after that.

  19. Donna McClure says:

    Hi,
    What a wonderful picture.
I’ve missed visiting the blog. My computer crashed on Friday so I’m without! Yuck! I’m at a friends now that let me use hers for awhile so I could catch up on messages & other necessary things in email/Internet life! My computer guy is coming on Saturday to see what is going on with mine. If he has to take it away it will be at least another week before I have one at home.
Till I get to visit again, keep up the entertainment!

  20. Cryna says:

What a cute picture, it is always so neat to look back at the pictures of when the kids were younger. And I would think Alpha Man had some say in all this. :rotfl: so the blame is not all yours.

  21. Pat L. says:

I love the photo - oh so cute.

  22. Karen Rice says:

Oh, wow, can I relate to this. My photo box is huge and weighs about 50 pounds. I got bitten by a scrapbook party bug, and had the brilliant idea to take all of my photos out of albums to create “heirloom” scrapbooks.

Slight problem - I started about 8 years ago, got about fifteen pages done, and now have hundreds and hundreds of homeless photos…and no time to scrapbook them.

I will forever curse the person who invited me to that stupid party…
