Dearest Middle,
I’m not sure how many times I’ve told you that you aren’t going to make it to your next birthday. Probably more than fifteen, which is how old you are today.

Happy Birthday my beautiful, curious, tenacious, tough-as-nails, HUGE hearted Middle! Smile for me?

Oh, I forgot. There’s no smiling in basketball!

Maybe you could put the ball down for a sec and give me a little smile. Just a little one . . .

Pretty please?

Aw, thanks. Did I mention that you’re stubborn as they come? And bull-headed? And obstinate? Yes, I realize those are all the same things, but that’s what you are. All that.
And so much more. I love you, you grumpy-head, even when you pretend not to hear me, even when you pretend I’m annoying you–
What’s that? I really am annoying you? Well, then, my job is done here. I’m going inside now. Really.

Okay, now. Now I’m leaving. But I won’t be far. Ever. Don’t forget that you beautiful woman/child. I’ll always be here.
Your loving momma

It all goes so fast! Happy birthday, and may you savor the last year in your middle’s life without her driving.

Someday she’ll appreciate all that you’ve done - of course, by then she’ll be a mom and have one just like herself. Ha.

She’s already bugging me to drive . . . And let me just say, there is little more terrifying than imagining her on the road. In charge of a moving vehicle.

You know, now that I think about it, it strikes me that perhaps Middle should not drive a car. This is based on the descriptions we have had here from you. This wild child would be too confined in a car. She really would be more appropriately conveyed via motorcycle.
After your heart restarts,
surely Middle driving a car will sound better than Middle on a motorcycle.

Oh to be 15 again. Okay maybe I don’t want to be 15 again, but I would like to not have the beginnings of tricepts that wave in the breeze.
