There’s something about going snow shoeing on fresh powder surrounded by a million acres of powdery forestland that appeals to me. Odd, for a misplaced Los Angeles girl who went years and years without even seeing snow, I know.
But after a fast paced city life, where everything moves at morphed speed, it’s really amazing to get out into the wild open space where the only thing moving is the wild life.
Well, and me, especially once I see a coyote or bear. Yep, I can really move under those conditions.
I dragged one of my kids with me the other day. She isn’t fond of snowshoes. Or rather, not fond of trying to get up once you fall . . . And once she sees these pics, she’s not going to be fond of me.
Going down . . .

Staying down . . .

Struggling in tune to my manic laughter . . .

Almost got it . . .

This is where I need to tell you that it truly is really hard to get up once you’re down. But it’s really fun to watch . . .

Yeah. Maybe if you ever come visit, you don’t want to go snow shoeing with me . . .

Your poor baby. I emailed you off the blog about my morning. You would have been laughing at my adventures.

Mom, laughing at your child? How cruel, but I don’t think I’d be able to keep myself from laughing either. If I were to come and visit, I would prefer to be on a snowmobile with all that snow.

It isn’t easy at all!
I grew up in an isolated area of the province of Quebec and usually I had to snowshoe out to the road (quite some distance) to catch the school bus for 7:20AM. Back in those days, snowshoes were the real kind, the old fashioned kind, not these small, sleek ones you see today. Being a foolish kid, I’d be in a hurry and not do them up properly, and invariably I’d end up face first in the snow, books and scribblers scattered everywhere. You’d think I’d have learned, but nope!
I don’t think I could snowshoe now, though it might be fun to try.

It would have been very hard for me not to laugh too. Snowshoes, another reason to be glad I live where we only get snow every 5 years or so.

Have a great weekend!

Duly noted… no snowshoeing with Jill!
Would it be easier to snap them off, get up and put them back on, at least one of them? Maybe you didn’t get a shot of it, but I thought how fortunate that the dogs weren’t in her face while she struggled!
I’d still give it a try… your snow looks fabulous!

She will get over it - I laugh at my daughter all the time. She can work thru it in therapy. LOL
I recognize the grey hoodie. It must be a requirement in all high schools, that hoodie. I love that thing. It’s so shapeless and unflattering… disguises my daughter’s cute little shape. Hallelujah! LOL

Actually, I would love it. I’ve never done it, and I’m always up for a new adventure, especially with a friend or colleague!
Glad you had so much fun.
I went walking on the cold beach near me yesterday, because it was so beautiful. Today, it’s snowing like crazy, so I’m staying in until I have to go out and shovel out the car before it switches over to freezing rain and I’d need a pickaxe tomorrow!
My pickaxe is in my OTHER life!

You are so bad! I like it! I’ve got to start carrying my digital camera around with me to capture those kinds of moments.
I’m up for trying snow shoeing. But believe me, the pictures would be a lot more funny watching this So. Cal girl try to get up. (I think I’ve been in the snow, oh, half a dozen times.)

The thing is, if you take the shoes off and try to get up on your feet, you sink down really far. We call it post-holing. After that, it’s impossible to get up, and it’s more impossible to get the snow shoes back on . . .
The whole thing is really quite fun to watch.
Especially for one who has gone face down into the snow too many times to count.

As Ames would say - you are so wrong!!! But I’d laugh too.
Snowshoeing with you? I don’t think so, that sounds too close to exercising …

I LOVE the puppy trying to help picture. That is so cute.
I have never been snowshoeing. Considering my disasters with skiing, I think I am better off observing deep snow from afar.

Since I’ve never lived anywhere that had much snow I’m not much for winter sports! I did a tiny bit of skiing once, ice skating outside on a pond & going down hill on a inner tube or some such thing! It was fun & I was much, much younger!!
My daughter lived in Colorado where she did some snowshoeing. Actually they had so much snow one storm she snowshoed in her neighborhood, I saw pictures it looked like your area!! She also took some snowshoeing lessons when she lived in Bend, Or. I’d like to try it but this old body isn’t in terribly good shape I’m sure I would fall down & give you a really good laugh!!

Posted on February 22nd, 2008 at 12:29 pmLoved the pictures, thank you daughter for giving us a good start on our Friday!!

Whoops! That is suppose to be “your” daughter!

Having never seen snow i can only try to guess. I can imagine that to the person who is not stuck it would be hilarious.
But to the person stuck, not so much.

I remember laughing at my daughter when she was five - kicking a ball in the grass barefoot and both feet went out from under her - ended up in ER with a concussion after having a seizure - everything ended up fine but I’m always reminded how I laughed - at first!!!
And if a bear is chasing you when you go down in the snowshoes I have to assume…
or maybe the bear gets a good laugh too

Your world looks so clean and fresh if a little chilly. Love the series of photos. Like Carol, I would still be there come the spring thaw if I fell.

I have never tried snowshoeing - but I know for certain that I most likely would be down for the count and no hope whatsofever of getting back up. Although it does look like fun - not the falling part - but the snowshoeing part………
