Pup Rescue, take two

January 16, 2008 | Filed under: Stuff

So we have this adorable new puppy, Izzy. She’s precious, but she is definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed if you know what I mean. After our blizzard last week, she decided she had to go potty in one particular spot, a spot that would have been fine without the seven feet of snow.

Except we have seven feet of snow.

But she wanted her spot, beneath the trampolines, which are off the side of the house and down a hill. A hill now just waiting to swallow up a little puppy.

Normally to let her outside, I open the front door, she goes bounding out while I put on my jacket, and by the time I get all dressed for the great white wonderland we’re currently living in, she is done doing her business and waiting for me by the front door.

This time I buttoned up the coat and peeked out for her. She was gone. She was not only gone, she was sliding in an avalanche down the hill, heading for her beloved trampolines, so wide-eyed I could see the whites around her pupils.

I yelled for her but that was ridiculous. No way could she climb back up so I did what any mother would do. Yelled for Middle to get her snow gear on and save that pup! This is a horrible shot, but it’s dark and snowing like mother nature on PMS. If you squint, you can see two dark figures on the left, attempting to get to the puppy underneath the trampolines:

After a few aborted tries (“stop pushing me” and my personal favorite “stop looking at me!”) the girls were successful. Here’s Middle with her precious cargo:

Whew. That was hard work. From my perch in the nice warm mud room.

Oh too funny.. Give Izzy a big doggie treat

  2. Stacy ~ says:

Aw, too cute. Izzy is a wild woman, and Jill, you’re smart for sending the kids to go find her.

  3. Dru says:

Too cute. He has his favorite spot, it’s marked. Good idea sending the girls out and you staying warm. Were you eating cookies?

  4. Elizabeth K says:

I can NOT believe you haven’t shovelled that dog a path yet! What kind of mother ARE YOU????

Seriously, though, be glad she wants to cooperate rather than just squatting wherever…

  5. Asthmagirl says:

She’s not that dumb if she knows that business needs to happen outside. We have one dog that must be carried to the potty spot in inclement weather!

Didn’t the coffee that much better because you were inside and warm watching the rescue?

  6. naomi says:

LOL! Living in the midwest we get snow, but not that much snow. When we lived in the Rocky Mtns in Alberta, we got SNOW! And Denali (our late dog) was only the size of a shoe box. Yeah, I remember rescuing him from certain death by snow pile.

I’m giggling over the comments the rug rats were making during the rescue. “Don’t look at me!” :rotfl: You’ve got some great kids there.

  7. Patty L. says:

Cute story. :rotfl: Here we have no snow and our dogs stay outside year round. Of course on the rare occasion that we get snow, the dogs don’t come of their houses. LOL

Amazing how much middle looks like you.

  8. Bailey Stewart says:

Izzy is adorable. This was too funny. I can just imagine your girls out there.

  9. Shelly says:

What are you feeding that dog?! She’s growing like a weed! Why can’t they stay little longer?

Funny story. I wouldn’t want to be the one who has to clean up under the trampoline in the spring. (wink)

  10. Susan says:

Isn’t that the reason people have kids?

  11. Jill says:

I’m not yet sure who will be cleaning up beneath the trampoline but it will not be me, I can tell you all that right now.

  12. Liza says:

Too funny. Love that you sent to girls out to save Izzy.

  13. bonita says:

Be glad you have a puppy willing to go outside in inclement weather. We’re dealing with dogs much too dainty to get their paws wet! So they do their business on the back porch whenever the patio stones are wet. Bad enough for the small CKCS’s but they’ve encouraged the two setters to avoid wet paws as well. Thank goodness we didn’t get the setters for hunting!l

  14. Courtney says:

At least if Izzy can’t be the brightest, she can be the cutest, right??

  15. Donna M says:

Love the pictures! Both Izzy & middle are so cute!
Oh do I remember, “Mom, she’s looking at me”!! I don’t miss that at all. Usually it was in the car, oh the joys of parenting & traveling with children!!! Then there was my brother at a very young age we set out on a long trip, had gone maybe about 5 or 6 miles & he wanted to know how much longer!!! Funny how I remember that, he is now in his 50′s!!!!

  16. Carolyn A. says:

    Cute story Jill!

BTW Jill, I just wanted to tell you that I finished SMART AND SEXY yesterday and I absolutely LOVED it!! Everyone – run out and get your copy if you haven’t already – it’s a great read!!

  17. jeanne says:

I think you were a very smart mommy

  18. Wendy says:

    Aww, Izzie’s so cute!

  19. Cryna says:

You were so smart Jill to stay in where it was warm and watch the antics. The girl’s did a great job of getting Izzie back. Loved the pictures.

  20. Brandy says:

And that, dear Lady, is why I have cats! *G*
Poor Izzy, I hope she warmed up!

  21. Caryn says:

Ooh, nice technique! Must rush out and get myself a couple of children.

I love the snow on puppy’s snout in that last shot. A perfect touch.

  22. Lis says:

Awww, poor Izzy! Glad the rescue operation was successful

  23. Jessica Raymond says:

    Aw, she’s so sweet!

I hope you’re well. I’ve got some catch-up reading to do as I haven’t stopped by here for a while, mainly because of all the poopy nappies and bottles that have become staple parts of my life. (Well, not *mine*. I’m not the one who needs them.)
