Anatomy of a storm

January 8, 2008 | Filed under: Stuff

First it blows in:

Then it blows and blows for 48 hours, until the house and the land around it are all under a blanket of seven feet of soft fluffy powdery snow:

That is not a fence in front of our house lightly covered in snow. That is nothing BUT snow. My kids have been in absolute heaven. The kitten? Not so much:

You probably can’t read kitty lips, so let me translate for you: GET ME THE HELL OUT OF THIS WHITE SHIT.

  1. Judy F says:

ah her poor cold little paws… I took one of my cats out in the snow years ago. The look on her face was priceless…
wow that is some snow storm…

Hope you have enough cookies for the seige.

  2. Stacy ~ says:

Oh geez. Btw, I’m with the cat. We just had almost 70 degree temps, melting all that icky white stuff. Sure it’s pretty in the beginning, then it becomes a PITA.

  3. Patty L. says:

I with the cat, I hate snow. Luckily in Maryland we are on our second seventy degree day and have at least two more in the forcast.

  4. Amy M says:

Enjoy that snow. I heard on the weather that there is another storm on its way. Maybe it is falling right now. Do your girls stay out of school with that much snow or is your county able to handle such depths?
I just order Strong and Sexy! Can’t wait to read it.

  5. Elizabeth K says:

I love watching the snow fall and add up–as long as I don’t have to drive in it. I only have one cat that goes outside and when it snows he’ll stand on the threshold and stare out, and stare out… and then turn around and go back to his favorite napping spot.

  6. Fannie says:

Please stay in the house and eat cookies Jill. With that much snow, you would sink and not be seen until spring thaw  Seven feet would be way over your head. I don’t blame the kitty, I wouldn’t like all that white stuff either. Hope everyone is having a great New Year and staying warm. Have a great day and hugs to all. BTW, it supposed to be about 70 degrees here today.

  7. Laurie says:

Wow! I don’t think I’ll be whining about our winter weather anytime soon after seeing yours! Of course, we’ve been unseasonably warm with temps in the high 60s the past couple of days. As nice as it’s been to not have to bundle up, there’s just something a little freaky about it being 70 in January.

Poor kitty – she needs to stay indoors where the bears won’t get her!

  8. Jill says:

Actually, the kids were out of school for two weeks for the holidays, plus yesterday because of the storm. They’re back today for the first time, but we have a big storm blowing in later tonight so they might be out again tomorrow. Oh boy . . .

  9. Liza says:

I’m with the kitten. Since I live in TN, not much chance of snow very often. It is very windy and 70 degrees today. Of course, when we do get snow, it shuts down the city since no one knows how to drive in snow.

  10. Kim says:

I love the snow- as long as I dont have to drive and or walk to campus in it. lol
We are having a heat wave right now- I love the warmer weather but it just makes me more depressed when it gets cold again. :hissyfit: I cant wait till Spring officially arrives:)
Good luck with the upcomming snow storm! (and the possible snow day that it might bring lol)

  11. Susan says:

My cats agree with yours!

  12. Jill says:

    A heat wave? I can’t even remember what warm feels like . . .

But my snow shoes and skis are very happy.

  13. Donna M says:

Jill, I’m with you, what does heat feel like! I’m tired of being bundled up & wearing layers & we don’t have the cold you do! It has been raining here all day & it is coming your way in the form of snow!! We are suppose to have a break tomorrow! :bananadance: The weather for us here on Sunday & Monday is looking real good! That is sun!!!
Beautiful pictures, have a good snow day, build a fire, eat cookies & read. I’m going to read & eat cookies in awhile!!

  14. Maureen says:

It’s in the 60′s today and it’s hard to believe it’s January. Enjoy your skiing and stay safe.

  15. Courtney says:

LOL. The real question is does Izzy love it? All labs I know, particularly puppies, love the snow.

  16. Lori says:

If your puppy fetches yet, make a snow ball and throw it for him. Keeps them busy forever looking for it. I used to do that with my chows.

  17. Cryna says:

OMG that is sooooooo much snow. We get snow here but never, never like that, I am with the kitten. She has the right idea.

  18. Brandy says:

We had about an inch of snow fall last year and I put the cats out in it, that expression is universal! (It was 65 here today.)
Bundle up and enjoy your cookies!

  19. Shelli Stevens says:

Ooooh so pretty! You don’t know how jealous I am right now. *Sigh* That just looks like too much fun.

  20. Caryn says:

It’s kind of pretty. But then, I lived in the mountains for a time and loved it. All the snow here has melted, leaving only mud, so I’m feeling a little sentimental.

  21. Jill says:

We got another foot today. Pretty unbelievable how much we have. Stay tuned, I’ll post more pics this week.

  22. jeanne says:

Great pics and poor kitty lol. I’m in the category of getting almost 70 degree weather for two days but it’s suppose to drop 30 but hey that’s still good for January.

  23. Diana says:

    All that snow is wild.

  24. Judy F says:

more snow. Yikes. Do we need to send cookies?

Did you watch Medium last night???

  25. Jemima says:

    Poor kitty lips!

Your pictures have made Simons and me long for some snow. It’s just cold and drear and depressing in the city.

  26. Sarah says:

Wow, that’s incredible! HOW do you get anywhere or do anything????

I’m in the tropics here in Texas… I think we might have gotten down into the 40′s last night, highs in the 70′s all week. I’d be happy to trade for, oh, about a week. :)

    Keep warm!
