More of my NOT favorite things
January 4, 2008 | Filed under: Stuff

Last night while under a blizzard warning, we found a wasp IN MY HOUSE, right next to the lit wood stove, hovering above the stacked wood. There are so many problems with this statement that I don’t know where to start. One, I STACKED THAT WOOD, which means I brought the wasp in, maybe even TOUCHED it. And two, it’s been butt ass cold here in the Sierras, so was the wasp awake when I touched him, or was he frozen and then he defrosted in front of the fire? And if that’s true, HOW MANY MORE WASPS ARE NESTLED IN THE WOOD ready to come back to life?
I need a cookie.
Oldest managed to hit the sleepy wasp with a newspaper, where it promptly hit the floor and then vanished. We all ran outside screaming for a little bit (except alpha man, because he never screams) but we nearly froze some of our parts off and had to go back in.
That wasp is just waiting for me to let my guard down and come sting me, I know it. I can’t concentrate because I’m waiting to be stung.
And the funny part is that this whole fiasco reminds me of when Youngest was about two years old. Playing outside in the yard, she found a wasp struggling in a spider’s web. Youngest is the most compassionate person I know, even at two, and wearing her precious little heart on her sleeve, she reached out to help the wasp escape its certain death in the web, and—
Got stung for her efforts.
I can still hear her wailing away. Not because she got stung, which did hurt, but because the wasp hurt her tender feelings… I really hate it when something hurts her tender feelings!
Wasps. One of my most not favorite things. So here’s the question of the day. What is one of your most not favorite things?

Aw, your youngest is a sweetheart. Sorry she got stunk. Glad you haven’t.
Wasps and bees don’t bother me too much – I’ve been stung and while it’s not a party, since I’m not allergic is more of an annoyance than anything else.
Now onions, roaches and waterbugs would rank up there with so NOT favorite things. As would the cold, pineapple, and reality t.v.

Flying huge daddy cockroaches who bang into the walls all night then swim in the glass of water you have next to your bed.
Posted on January 4th, 2008 at 4:57 amLovely.
My DH’s famiily have a SERIOUS wasp phobia. Serious to the point of crossing three lanes of busy motorway with screaching breaks, so that they can jump out of the car because one tiny wasp flew in to see if there was anything to eat.
I just laugh. Which annoys them.
How do you feel about bees?
Judy F says:
Bees and Wasps terrify me. I will run like an idiot.
Posted on January 4th, 2008 at 5:12 amDOn’t care much for spiders either.
Pat L. says:
That is easy. SNAKES!
Not too thrilled with those bees either, but snakes just give me the creeps.

Spiders – Period.

Which has never happend. But still…the concept. Crap. Now *I* need a cookie.

I don’t like bees and wasp because I have a slight allergy to both. However, spiders will have me running from a room. I even have dreams where spiders are on the ceiling, and I have to turn on every light in the house to make sure the ceiling is spider free.

Get a large can of Guinness. Pour half of it in the pan and put it near the wood.
Drink the other half.
The wasps are drawn to the Guinness and will drown, and by that time, you won’t care.
A pest specialist told my friend to use that to clear her house of the wasps that he couldn’t get rid of with his chemicals! And it was the only thing that worked. For three days, she had pans of Guinness all over the yard. I think a few deer and raccoons sampled it, too.
Least favorite things: cockroaches and the super rats we have here in NY.

Wasps, credit card collectors, bees, credit card collectors, yellow jackets, credit card collectors, hornets, credit card collectors, honey bees, credit card collectors, Britney Spears, credit card collectors, mushrooms, credit card collectors, not having a book to read, and did I mention credit card collectors?

Spiders. Seriously make me scream like a little girl. I had one on my ceiling once, and wimpered so much my roommate heard me downstairs and had to come up to investigate. She also had to kill it.
Posted on January 4th, 2008 at 8:32 amNot a fan of bees or wasps inside. Outside? They can go their way and I’ll go mine. But inside? It’s RAID time.
Jill says:
I used nearly an entire can of RAID and left this huge round stain on the throw rug in front of the wood stove.
It still didn’t kill the beast.
My husband, shaking his head at all the craziness, finally stepped in and took care of business. Don’t ask me what took him so long. Probably he was enjoying watching the Jill Crazy Show.

Most not favorite are snakes and mice!!!!

Yikes! I hate wasps, but more than anything I despise snakes. I am absolutely petrified of them and frankly I don’t believe the whole “they’re more afraid of you than you are of them.”
Nope. Not quite.

Awww, poor Youngest! A cute story, though. And I totally understand your heebeejeebies. As for my most not favorite things, in the bug world I’d have to say that black widows freak me out the most. They’re absolutely gorgeous, but they are so deadly-looking, just lying in wait in their webs.

I’ve brought wasps in on wood like that a time or two. Usually there’s only one there, but I sure worried about multiples when it first occurred.
I’m deathly allergic so they bother me, but not nearly as much as my goofy husband who swings at them and always misses. I’m sure one of these days he’s going to get me stung.

Snakes are one of my Not Favorite Things, although if they are of the nonpoisonious variety they are fine! I hate it when ants get in the house but they are non-threatening!!
Posted on January 4th, 2008 at 12:44 pmDevon, your post had me laughing out loud. I’ll have to remember the Guinness.
Right now my Not favorite thing is that there is a leak in the roof & I discovered that rain got blown in under the front door overnight. Good thing I happened to have a towel there the keep out the cold, it is soaked! The nasty storm heading Jill’s way went through here overnight with high winds & lots of rain. I haven’t been able to get a hold of the manager at the Realty company, maybe the power is out there! Obviously it is not here as I am on the computer! Our driveway is littered with debris from trees. It is raining to much to go out & really check things out!
Jill, hunker down! It sounds like you are already getting “weather”. On the news they are advising not heading up to the Sierra’s. Duh!!! But some people have no sense!
Okay, I’m being to long winded again!!! :blahblah:
Jill & family stay safe. Keep us posted.
I’d say have a great weekend but not sure what it will be like!

We had wasps trying to nest in the new edition. The hubby found some amazing spray that zaps the evil insect’s nervous system. *evil laugh* We keep lots on hand because apparently, wasps love our house. I’ll ask hubby what it is and let you know. It’s super amazing.
In the meantime, stay safe!

Bees, especially since I’m allergic to them. One time I was standing on an outside train platform and I saw a bee and he saw me and chased me up and down that platform. I couldn’t wait for that train door to open up fast.

Spiders and snakes!!! I know that’s two but I give each one equal billing.

I have to confess that wasps are pretty high up there but big hairy spiders are worse. Especially when they hang out in corners waiting for you. My three girls are all accomplished spider swatters so I guess I taught them one useful skill in life.

SPIDERS!
When my youngest was small she was on our hillside and made the mistake of trying to shoo a wasp off of a plant (it was minding it’s own business outside) and of course got stung. I was a mean mommy. Instead of running to her and consoling her I made her come to me and asked if she learned her lesson. Apparently I taught her too well because now she tries to save SPIDERS(and everything else) that are inside my house :yuck:

Spiders are bad, wasps and hornets are bad, but the one that gives me the willies? Ticks. We hike in the summer and I obsessively check the kids and myself when we get home. Just the idea…….UGH!

I HATE those little creepy crawler things that are all hairy and have lots of legs and just LOVE to hang out on the wall and the ceiling. *shiver* I freaked out once and jumped onto a chair because one was on the floor and moving fast towards me. Those suckers can move! After my roommate stopped laughing at me she went off to kill it for me. blegh :yuck:

Not much bothers me really.
I don’t particularly like spiders and flies and ticks. I used to be a bee keeper years ago and they don’t usually bother you unless you scare them. They are actually quite friendly. Jill, I saw the weather for your area. Please take care and stay inside and keep warm. Hopefully, you won’t lose power but keep candles close “just in case”. Everyone have a good week-end and hugs to all.

Any type of insect or arachnid would make my list. I am SOOOO terrified of spiders that I saw a picture of one on a blog today and wound up freaking out under my desk.
As for any other insect, I’m ok only if it keeps a respectable distance. Otherwise I panic. Hell, I hyperventilate even if a beautiful butterfly attempts to land on me.
