Adopting Kitty

December 5, 2007 | Filed under: Stuff

It’s been years and years since I’ve had a cat — until last month when we adopted the abandoned Sadie. She’d been found at two days old, starving to death, and when we saw her at the humane society, the first thing that came to mind was a baby ostrich. Bare ass naked with a single tiny patch of gray fuzz on top of her head. I took one look at her and lost my heart.

She has since grown hair, a gorgeous coat, and surprise of all surprises, she didn’t turn out to be bald, or solid gray, but a gorgeous tortoise shell mix-match of gray and white, with a tan patch on the back of her head.

She is fond of sleeping on my manuscript, drinking out of the husband’s cup when he isn’t looking (which I consider fair since I’m quite certain he drinks out of the milk container when I’m not looking), and of attacking the sleeping puppy.

She is a huge pain in my ass, and the new love of my life, which is why the other night when she vanished, I panicked. We searched high and low, including the vent where we lost her two weeks ago, and finally we turned around and there she sat in the middle of the living room, prissily washing her face like “what the hell are you humans in an uproar over now?”

I have no idea where she was, but I’m glad she’s back.

With those markings, my guess is she’s part Bengal. Son #2 has two of them and your new baby looks a lot like Lucy (aka Lucifer).

  2. Stacy ~ says:

Awww, she sounds just like a Shalvis *g* I love her fur – she’s just gorgeous, a pampered little princess. Definitely a keeper.

  3. Elizabeth K says:

Cats have such an amazing ability to disappear right in front of you, don’t they? I’m convinced my house is full of secret passages that only the cats know about. Edd (my champion hider) has squeezed himself into places unknown, causing us to turn the whole house upside down, convinced he’s lost–and he shows up an hour (or six) later, totally like, “What? You were looking for me?”

  4. Wendy says:

    She’s beautiful! I can’t wait until I get a cat..or 5! lol.

  5. Honey says:

She’s such a pretty girl!! I love that kitten stage.

When one of ours disappears, I pull out the fishing pole toy. I don’t know how they hear that, but they do, and they’ll come running. We’re probably teaching them the reward for hiding is playtime though, LOL.

  6. Patty L. says:

We recently had a kitten die from a reaction from a flea bath, so now every time Penny hides I worry that she has died somewhere in my house. Of course, Soxs didn’t die while hiding, but it’s a huge fear to loose another kitty. Your new kitty is beautiful.

  7. Judy F says:

ah she is such a sweetie. Sounds like she fits in with the Shalvis clan.

  8. Karen Erickson says:

Love that pic of Sadie! In fact my 4 yr old daughter saw it and said, “She looks like Max!” Max is our new kitty we got in the summer. He is a pain in our ass but so sweet! I love him.

  9. Allie says:

What a beautiful cat! Those markings are striking. And what an adorable photo. :)

  10. Shelli Stevens says:

Oooh how cute! She’s adorable! And I hate it when they do that disappear for days thing. Worries the snot out of me!

  11. Susan says:

Just wait until you put up your Christmas tree!

  12. Cryna says:

What a cutie. And stretched out like not a worry in the world. Even if she did give you all fits as to where she could have been. But she is adorable.

  13. jeanne says:

So sorry Patty. I just went through my 7 catching fleas from my newest addition – first time this has happened. I’m not positive yet if I got them all.

Jill, Sadie is gorgeous. And speaking of pain in the ass – that’s my 5th cat’s name Pita

  14. Donna M says:

Cute kitty! She is really turning into a beautiful cat. Thanks for sharing the picture with us.

  15. Bailey Stewart says:

    That’s a cat for ya.

Listen, Aidan, Bubba, Neely Shae and BooBear saw Sadie and they want to oome visit for a little while, like, um, when I take down the tree. Or they could visit Wendy.

I’m so sorry Patty. What a tragic loss.

  16. Alicia says:

Aww, Jill, she’s gorgeous, and she looks part leopard, part tiger. I’m more of a dog person, but I think I would love a kitten as sweet and lovely as Sadie.

  17. spyscribbler says:

Jill, she is one of the most gorgeous kitties I have ever seen. And I say that while owning four cats, who I already think are the prettiest in the whole world.

  18. Brandy says:

Aw Patty, I am so sorry.

Jill, she’s adorable! One or 2 of ours has been known to disappear and we will hunt high and low to no avail. Then, about 20 minutes later the missing cat appears from nowhere.
    Enjoy!

  19. bonita says:

I would go nuts looking for Teasle… Then I would hear her mewing. Incredible, but it sounded as though she were in the wall behind the bathtub. Thought I was going crazy until one day I caught her pushing her way out of the cabinet under the kitchen sink. Seems she’d crawl in there, then squeeze through the hole for the plumbing, and then slither between the kitchen and bathroom walls until she was between the tub and the outside wall!!!

Hope your Sadie stays well when she ‘disappeears’.

  20. Lori says:

We have seven in the house and one of them was an outside rescue before we made him number seven. When he was younger we kept him in the basement at night until we could get him fixed and let him out in the morning. Well, he found out he could get in the floor boards through the basement and I would call and call and when I walked by he reached out and touched my head, like to have scared me half to death! Now they dissapear and reappear pretty regular.
