CONTEST DAY

March 21, 2007 | Filed under: Stuff

UPDATE:
Winners drawn randomly were Laura and Jemima. So email me with a few book choices and your snailmail!

Original Post:
So I’m sitting in front of the tv sniffling over the silly, sweet elephant commercial. You know the one, where the elephant’s zoo keeper gets sick and the elephant then waddles his way to the store to get the zoo keeper’s medicine? Makes me all misty-eyed every time. (And what do you suppose that says about me anyway, maybe that I’m an overtired sap?)

And yes, I used to cry at AT&T commercials too. Pathetic, I know. Anyway, enter the husband. He looks at the tv, and then at me. “You’re kidding me.”

“If you laugh, I’ll hurt you.”

“You do know that’s a commercial for a Visa card, right?”

“Never mind. I’m going to hurt you anyway.”

“Look, don’t take this wrong, but you’re crying over a commercial. I’m not too worried.”

WHY did I marry him again? Somebody needs to remind me. In any case, I realize I am mostly alone here with my TV addiction problem, but bear with me for today’s contest. Name your favorite commercial and be entered. That simple. In a few days I’ll draw random names for a free book from my backlist.

OH! And be sure to stay tuned. Monday I’m debuting a new website design. Hope you like it!

  1. Judy F says:

one of my favorites is the m & M’s at christmas. Where Santa and one of the M & M’s say “he is alive” and both faint….

  2. Maureen says:

Those Nationwide commercials that tell you “Life comes at you fast.” I thought the one with Britney Spears husband was funny.

  3. Laura says:

I can’t think of a current one but a few years back there was this commercial where this couple is sitting at a table in a restaurant and the conversation goes something like this:

Guy: I really had a good time tonight.
Girl: I did too. We should do this again sometime.
Guy: Really? Are you available next Saturday?
    Girl: (smiling) Yes, I am.
Guy: (really excited) Great! I’ve got the church reserved. And the minister is ready to go!

(they interrupt the scene at this point to advertise what the commercial is really about but that part never stuck with me)

The camera comes back to the table, the guy is alone.

Guy: (talking over his shoulder to table behind him) She’s just in the ladies’ room. She’ll be back in a minute. (smiling a huge smile)

That commercial reminded me of a date I had been on and made me laugh my rear off every single time I saw it! :)

  4. Elizabeth K says:

Your sweet hubby probably bribed you with cookies to marry him.

  5. Elizabeth K says:

Oops, missed the contest part. The funniest commercial I can recall (it’s only 7 a.m. here, after all) is an old FedEx one with the late great Steve Irwin–He’s doing one of his shows and the snake bites him and he says “Not to worry! We had the antivenin shipped by FedEx!” then one of his crew whispers in his ear and he says “It appears we’ve used an alternate carrier–but it’s okay folks–I’ll be–” then his eyes cross, his tongue sticks out and he drops off camera.

Oh, and the MacGyver–mastercard one from the superbowl a few years ago, with the tube sock escape from the exploding factory–PRICELESS.

  6. Madison says:

I love that Geico – caveman commercial where he’s sitting on the couch with his therapist. That is just too hilarious.

  7. Heather Harper says:

I like the Geico caveman commercial where he is at the airport, with that song “Everywhere I go” playing in the background.

  8. julie says:

I love the one where the couple is sitting in a car, in a garage and all they can see is all this snow. The man looks at the woman, who is behind the wheel, and says “Don’t worry. My mom says we can stay another day.” The woman looks at him then the snow and practically blasts thru the snow. Of course its a suv commercial. I could totally relate!

  9. Karen B says:

 I love the Serta counting sheep commercials – all of them! :rotfl:

  10. Melissa says:

I love the mac and pc commercials. I am a pc girl who longs to be cool enough to be a mac girl! :loser:

  11. Rhonda Nelson says:

Can’t wait to see your new site, Jill! Laura (of Swank) is currently working on a new design for me, too. I love getting my site spruced up. :-)

  12. Rhonda Nelson says:

Oh, and I covet you :loser: icon. I *need* that. :rotfl:

  13. Carol says:

I like the commercial where the guy is turning a light switch on and off and asking his wife if she sees anything happening and she is ignoring him while up the street a garage door is going up and down and hitting a woman’s car.

I also like the one where a little girl is in the back seat of a van talking and talking about silly stuff. She is so cute!

I can’t, of course, remember what either of the commercials are for! lol

  14. Ellen says:

I love all the Hallmark commercials, and of course I cry my eyes out (though I’ve seen my husband wipe away a tear or two at those).

Of current commercials, I also like the Geico/Caveman ones, as well as the Carne Asada lions for Taco Bell. CAAARNE. CAAARNE. The one asks, “How’re my teeth?” The other answers, “Good. Scary.” LOL.

  15. Deborah says:

Up here in the Great White North ™ we had this Bell Telephone commercial that ran around Christmas time a few years ago. It still makes me cry.

A young boy (around 7 or 8) is the last kid on the school bus (going home). He talking to the elderly bus driver.

    Kid: Do you have kids?

Driver: Yep, but they live far away.

Kid: That’s sad, I guess you don’t get to see them a lot.

Driver (looking sadly off into the distance): Not as much as I’d like.

Kid: (Hands him Bell Telephone gift certificates) Merry Christmas Mr. Smith.

    Or something like that.

I’m crying right now. Stupid commercial.

  16. Bailey Stewart says:

    It ate my post! :hissyfit:

  17. Jill says:

Posts got eaten? Really? How did that happen?

  18. Tempest Knight says:

The one that really breaks my heart is the one that shows all these dogs in dog pounds, and it says they’d donate a percentage to dog pounds if you buy this brand of dog food. I see each dog’s face, and then I hear the voiceman saying things like “I don’t know why I am here.” “How I got here.” “But I want to go home.” Forget it, I break down and cry. And it takes a lot to make me cry, you know.

  19. Marcy says:

Maybe they looked like cookies? :rotfl:

I like the elephant commercial too, Jill.

I also love the one with the birds in the tree who decide to ring the guy’s doorbell and then when he goes to find nobody there they close his sliding glass door so he walks into it. Then they laugh and decide to do it again. LOL

  20. kim h says:

i love all the sportcenter commericals Jill. the one with the manning brothers is funny

  21. Fannie says:

I like the Banquet Pot Pie commercial with Tony Stewart and also the Subway ones. No need to tell you that Tony is my driver. The caveman ones are good also. My all time favorite one is an asperin commercial from many years ago. A little boy is asking if his friend can come out to play and the Mom says no, he’s sick and she gave him Bayer’s Children Asperin and the little boy say’s Mother’s are like that. Probably not accurate but close. Every one have a great day and Hugs to all. Oh yeah, DH was most likely more understanding back then and now is a typical hubby.

  22. Toni Anderson says:

Did you see that little girl crying on American Idol last night? I was crying watching her! My hubby is pretty sentimental too. Thankfully he’s as likely to cry at sad movies.

I can’t think of a commercial. Brain has holes in it today :whip:

  23. Michele says:

Ah…commercials! I have so many I think are funny. My husband and I love the one right now with Abe Lincoln, a ground hog, and an astonaut where this guy can’t sleep. We love the part especially when the ground hog says, “Whatever”. They are starting to have a lot versions of this commercial. The latest one Abe Lincoln has this real smart alecky attitude. It is hilarious!

I love the FedEx commercial where there are two cavemen talking it grunt language. :blahblah: The one asks the other if he mailed out his package yet using FedEx. He said no he didn’t because it hasn’t been invented yet and the other caveman gets mad at him. :wall: So he leaves the cave. As he walks out he kicks a little dinosaur running by. Then, a huge dinosaur foot comes from above and crushes the caveman.

There are others but I only chose the two I liked the best.

  24. Susan says:

I love the one where the woman is getting a massage from a good looking guy and he is telling her all these great things then the salesman wakes her and she says she’ll take the mattress. I just can’t remember the mattress brand!

  25. Wendy says:

Oh Jill! I can so relate to crying at stupid commercials. When I was pregnant with my firstborn, I cried like a fool at all the Dr Pepper commercials. I don’t even like Dr Pepper!

As for favorites, I love the Bud Light series that debuted at the Superbowl. That’s the time of year when I wish I had TiVo and could ignore the game and just watch the commercials.

  26. Shelly says:

Oh that one gets me every time too!

You’re pathetic? I have a whole playlist of favorite animal commercials.
Funniest has to be the cat herding one. http://youtube.com/watch?v=_UAwZKL4_0w (the cowboy with the lint roller gets me giggling everytime!) :rotfl:
The commercial that always makes me cry is the Bud baby horse who wants to pull the cart and then all the big horses help push it. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cP2PixShNeU
Ellen’s Am. Ex. Ad w/ the animals is pretty cute too.

Looking forward to your new site Jill. Oddly enough I am looking for a web builder for my bizs. Will certainly check out Swank! Thanks for the lead!

  27. Bailey Stewart says:

    Tempest made me cry

  28. Lis says:

My favorites right now are the Bell commericials here in canada with Gordon and Frank (2 computer generated beavers). They kill me. The geico caveman are good too. And the bud superbowl commericial with the hitchikers

  29. Amy L. says:

One of my favorite commercials is for Comcast cable. A man walks up to a receptionist and politely says “Good Morning, I’d like to see Mr. Johnson, please.” The receptionist is smacking her gum and mocks his voice with “Hello, I’d like to see Mr. Johnson.” Her phone rings. She picks the receiver up and drops it back in the cradle without answering it. The announcer says “Bad reception? Get Comcast.”

The reason I enjoy the ad is because there are times at Work when I’d like to be like that bad receptionist.

  30. Devon Ellington says:

My favorite commercial of all time is the Herding Cats commercial shown during the super bowl a few years ago. I laughed so hard I fell off my chair. You can still watch it on the internet.

  31. Amy L. says:

    Oh, Tempest,

That dog pound commercial always makes my tears well up! Makes you want to rush to the pound and adopt a whole herd of dogs, doesn’t it?

  32. RobynL says:

We have one where the wife is showing a friend her great new windows with blinds in between that you can pull up or down with a cord/handle. Her husband is in the backyard with the dog and BBQ’ing. The BBQ catches on fire but they don’t see it. The friend asks again to see how the blinds work and the wife pulls them down and this time the husband is rolling on the ground with flames shooting up and the dog is running around but they still don’t notice; they are concentrating on the blinds.

  33. Amy S. says:

One of my favorite commercials is the Atlas Excedrin commercial.

    http://www.excedrin.com/media/atlas_flash.html

  34. Cryna says:

I have only caught a few commercials that they show during the hockey games since I don’t watch much TV ……….but I do like the new Subway ones that they show (especially where the girl says she has a new perfume line, one she would never wear, but fully endorses)…….and I like the one that they have with the two beavers that advertise Bell.

  35. Marie says:

I love all the Geico commercials with the gecko, he’s so cute!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYYenpfrlRg :rotfl:

  36. Laure says:

I’m a teary-eyed sap, too. I haven’t paid a lot of attention to the elephant commercial, other than seeing an elephant in a drugstore. But I’d probably get a little misty seeing it, too. As for the hubby? I believe his “tool” drawer had some appeal, lol.

My favorite commercials are the ones USA network does with the characters from their different shows interacting. I’m partial to the one with Johnny Smith (from “The Dead Zone”) and Shawn Spencer (“Psych”) at a diner bickering about whose talent is better/more deserved, etc, when over at the next table Monk is laying out his kernels of corn into neat rows of ten then heaving a huge sigh of relief that his little world is finally in order. The other two guys look at each other and comment “Well, it could be worse.” I chuckle. There are a couple others, like Johnny Smith and WWE’s Triple H (combining love of wrestling with major crush on Johnny, lol) and I love the concept of characters from shows or books interacting.

  37. Sue A. says:

I am a Mac girl so I’m biased when I say I love the iPod commercials (music, dancing and cool colors-love it all) and I also get a kick out of the PC & Mac commercials.

  38. Brandy says:

I don’t know if everyone has a Dairy Queen, but there’s a new one to advertise their flamethrower sandwich and 3 people talk while inhaling at the same time, till one goofs and the next thing you know they’re all breathing fire and ducking and screaming. I laugh hysterically each time it comes on. Another favortie is from about 2 years ago, a Man is in his kitchen making dinner for he and his wife when while cutting meat, the white persian jumps up and knocks over the spaghetti sauce, he picks the cat up by the scruff of the kneck in one hand while holding a knofe in the other, his wife walks in the door and the cat is covered in tomato sauce with the guy holding it and the knife. I don’t know why, but this one cracks me up too, it was for Ameriquest.

  39. Cathy says:

I really like the AMEX commercials that Ellen Degeneres makes with different animals portraying her staff members.

  40. catslady says:

There are sooooo many. I like the Geico where they have stars help tell the story for “real people.” – Little Richard is my favorite but they’re all good. My favorite from the superbowl was the machine (that looked real) commits suicide because they didn’t need him anymore and then you see he was dreaming – they actually changed the ending of that commercial because they thought it was insensitive but I felt so sorry for it lol. And any animal commerical is usually a hit with me. Oh, and the budweiser frogs were good. Actually the beer companies have a lot of good commericals – like the magic refrigerator with the revolving wall. I think some of these commmericals are so good but I have to admit I rarely can remember what they were trying to sell – not what they’re aiming for I wouldn’t think.

  41. laura says:

i love the home depot commercial where the girl tells her dad its time to get a new fridge. he seriously thinks about it while the girl walks into the living room where here mom pays her for getting her dad to think about the fridge. it seems like something my mom and i would do. too funny.

  42. Ericka Scott says:

I just love the commercial for the new sleep aid (of course I can’t remember the name of it), where the key line is “your dreams miss you!” The talking beaver on his blackberry is hysterical.

I also like the Mac versus PC commercials. . .especially the one where PC is in a hospital gown going in for an upgrade to Vista or the one where they install a peripheral camera by duct taping it to PC’s head!

Thanks for the contest. . . it’s been fun reading everyone else’s favorite commercials!

  43. Dru says:

The commerical that first popped into my head was the Budweiser Clydesdale horse marching across the country and bowing towards the missing skyline.

I also like the Volvo commercial where the dad picks up his young daughter and she is telling him how her day went.

  44. Joyce says:

I love the Budweiser commercial where the are two groups of horses and then you see a zebra who is the referee.

  45. Jemima says:

I like the Budweiser commercial from last year’s Super Bowl that had the little baby Clydesdale who goes trotting into the barn and sees the big wagon and the horse collar and then puts his little nose in it and pulls and pulls and is all proud. And then the big Clydesdales are really pushing from behind. That kills me…

I also like the mac and pc commercials. I looooove the Mac guy. Purr.

  46. Jennie Adams says:

    Hi Jill and everyone.

I’m in Australia, so hadn’t seen many of the ads you’ve talked about – but youtube is great – I’ve just caught up on some giggles. Thanks!

    Here’s a couple I enjoyed.

Ad for Toyota utility truck with ‘lots of grunt’:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-Y3AsZ19Hc

    Great Wall of China ad:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvlWQyvEI38

    I hope the links work.

    Best wishes,

    Jennie

  47. Kathleen says:

I always enjoy watching the Hallmark commericals…especially the ones that aire during their Hallmark Hall of Fame movies. They are usually tear jerkers and very sweet!

  48. Angie says:

Oh, this is easy– the Peter! ad at Christmas for Folgers. The (much) older brother comes home from school before everyone is awake and his little (late in lif) sister is on the staircase and yells, “Peter!” Then they go make coffee. I’m still pondering: the age gap of these kids, why Peter comes home at the crack of dawn (he is in college isn’t he?) and why they have to make coffee (especially the little girl).

  49. megan says:

hi mom this is my favorite commercial!!! it is the one with the k9 advantix and the puppy.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=wlMNpvHm3OI

love your favorite daughter (aka megan)

  50. Jill says:

I am LOVING all these commercials, lol. And hi favorite daughter … go to bed.

  51. Kelsey Shalvis says:

Hi mom, here’s my favorite… its the dr. pepper commerical where the guy does “anything for love…” lol

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5yLZdlF7xE

love your more favorite daughter….. (aka, KELSEY THE GREAT AND AMAZINGEST PERSON EVER!!!!)

  52. Jill says:

Hi Kelsey The Great. Loved your commercial. And psst, if you bring me a box of Girl Scout cookies, you too can be my favorite.

  53. megan says:

 mommy!!! i have another commercial that is purtty funny too! it is the jack in the box commercial and there is a stoned guy talking to “jack” the little bobble head… so check it out…

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=CWVnPlUCrf8

    enjoy!!! hehe :wigglebrow:

  54. Sarah says:

Absolute funniest commercial — Three guys in suits looking out an office window complaining about the construction workers in the street.
They note in disgust how one guy is doing all the work while 3 are standing around.

Then… the woman in the office working at a laptop says “Done!”… and the 3 guys in suits who were standing around doing nothing come over “Yay, Team!”

LOL From the mouth of a full-time working mom, it’s just so damn true!! ;)

    PS – I think it’s a commercial for chips.

  55. Brandi says:

    Hello Jill,

I love the one where the guy says to his friend you dont put another man’s girl in your five. And Secret Lovers plays LOVE IT!!

    Thanks Brandi :bananadance:

  56. Celise says:

The old Gap commercials. The ones where they were swing dancing. And the old Gap Kids commercials where they had the kids playing in a band? I miss those. Looking forward to the new website. Emily from Swank is re-vamping my author site, so I’ll be doing an unveiling soon, too.

  57. Karen L. says:

I love the pizza commercial – I think it is Dominos where the features are exaggerated – big eyes – it looks good, big lips – it tastes good and big nose – it smells good – you get the picture. Kudos to whoever made this one.

  58. Diana says:

Jill, your daughters are taking over your blog. :P

I don’t remember what this commercial advertised, but I really liked the one where elderly people were listening to rap music and speaking in slang. A rapper was in the commercial, too. Sorry for being vague, but my memory’s not always the best.

  59. Rose G. says:

The Pepto Bismol commercial – where the people are lined up dancing – and singing – upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, etc.

  60. gena says:

Hey Jill you told me Courtney was your favorite. Hi Megan and Kelsey. Miss you guys:-)

  61. Lady M says:

Favorite current commercial – A girl is looking through the fridge, turns to her dad and says, “this is so old. We should get a new one at Home Depot.” Dad looks like he might take the suggestion seriously. Girl walks through living room, smoothly picking up a $ bill that her mom holds behind her back. Nicely done.

  62. Minna says:

When I was in the States few years ago I saw this Geico commercial where a tiny gekko wanted to change his name into comodo dragon. It was hillarious!

  63. Cheryl S. says:

I’m loving the AT&T Mobile commercials where the cell phone calls are dropped at the most inopportune times . . . where the lady jokingly remarks, “maybe you should promote me to manager” and then hears nothing but dead air in response.

  64. Patty L. says:

I love all of the “Priceless” commercials. That normally crack me up.

  65. Crystal B. says:

I love the Budweiser commercial where there is one beer left and the guys agree to play rock, paper, scissors for it and one of the guys throws a real rock at the other guy to get the beer.

  66. Alice Audrey says:

Hey, I cry over comercials too, and I’m no wimp. Here, I’ll help your with your dh :fryingpan:

    Alice

  67. Helen L. says:

I like the cereal commercial where it is so crunchy that the young man eating it cant hear his boss firing him.

  68. ernestine says:

Thanks to Laura and Lady M for explaining the ‘we need a new fridge’ commercial. I totally didn’t get it!
3 hanky: Dogpound dogs listing their accomplishments ane wondering why they’re in pound.
1 1/2 hanky: baby clydesdale ‘pulling’ Bud wagon.
Hippest: A Lincoln & Blackberry obsessed beaver.

  69. Donna M says:

My favorite commercials!! :?: :?: In this area we have Toyota commercials done by former 49′er quarterback Steve Young, I love them!! Especially the one where he is singing & he has a terrible voice! Since I am/was a Steve Young & a 49′er fan those commercials usually crack me up! There is also one where he is laying on the couch repeating word for word children’s programs, also funny! Many years ago (more many than I want to say!!) Alka Seltzer used to do some really good commercials, they were before High Tech came into our lives!

  70. Kris says:

One that got me the other day and it annoyed me because i teared up when I was a Walmart. They were showing a commercial or something o nthe tv in the store and there was a little girl cutting her dolls hair. And then another dolls hair. I was thinking “oookay” and then in the next scene she was running up and hugging her mother(?) who was bald from chemo treatments, and i teared up i nthe middle of Walmart.

I love the Publix (grocery store) Christmas commercials. It is the family gathered around the dinner table and the knicknacks and salt and pepper shakers and other things in the room turn off the lights. When they come back on, all the knicknacks and shakers and such are fat and the food is all gone. I just think they are cute.

  71. Teresa W. says:

One commercial I saw that cracked me up was the Meijer’s ad that has the little girl sitting at a table and someone asks her to taste a name brand of spinach. She takes a bite and says yuck! Then they ask her to try the Meijer brand and she takes a bite and says yuck! This cracks me up since I remember when I was a kid and couldn’t stand spinach. I have to admit I love it now. The commercial is supposed to show that there is no difference between Meijer brands and name brands.

  72. Alicia says:

I’m in Australia, so we generally get different ads here, but my favourites are the Carlton Draught ads (you can get them on YouTube, and they’re all hilarious, especially the ones for Carlton Mid Strength beer, from the Male Intelligence Division).

Kris: i haven’t seen that ad, but the way you recounted the ad with the little girl cutting off her dolls hair – i was crying like a baby.

  73. Carolyn A. says:

I can’t think of a favorite commercial, but it’s nice to know that someone besides me gets a little teary-eyed over commercials. I keep a box of tissues next to the sofa in the tv room, you know just in case.

  74. Mira says:

This is too funny, I’m enjoying just reading about the commercials.

My favorite is really old and is for a lightbulb (although I don’t remember what brand — isn’t that funny?)

It’s an elderly couple eating soup for dinner.

The wife says in a rather quavering voice,
“The romance is gone. When the lights go out yoooou fall asleep!”
    Just then the lightbulb pops
you hear a plop sound and then the husband snoring in his soup.

Makes me laugh just to think about it.

  75. Jodi says:

My favorite commercials are the UPS commericals that run during the NASCAR races. Dale has got to race the big brown truck!

  76. Serena Polheber says:

Ok, am prob too late for the contest but I had to share this commercial. There are a lot of great crying ones, there are fabu God I wish that was me commercials (aka Walgreens living in perfect) and then there are the ones that will make you pee your pants laughing…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzWVV5zOACo

  77. Cathie says:

My favorite commerial would be those old Wendy’s of “Where’s The Beef with the old lady! I don’t know how you find the old commerials on the internet, but I shall learn cuz i’d love to see them again!

And Hi to your daughters visiting!
