Monday’s Muse

March 19, 2007 | Filed under: Stuff

Sometimes my life feels like a roller coaster. Most of the time I like it that way but once in awhile I need to stop the ride and get off and walk around at my own pace. I did this yesterday when I took the dog to the lake and sat on a dock and sketched in my drawing pad. All by myself. With no one saying “mom, mom, mom”. Water’s all snow melt so it was far too cold to dip my feet in though the dog didn’t have a problem swimming her heart out.

I’ve been on a reading spree. Just finished Natural Born Charmer (LOVED it), read the latest JD Robb, and am now in the middle of Shopaholic and Baby by Sophie Kinsella.

Are you on or off the roller coaster, and what are you reading?

Update: and yes, for those of you who’ve asked, I took this pic while sitting on a dock at Donner Lake, south shore, looking toward east shore.

  1. Anna Louise Lucia says:

I’m firmly on the rollercoaster, heading for the third loop, and now I think the safety bar’s broken.

Life seems to be composed of the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows at the moment. They balance out, I guess. But I’d like to step off once in a while.

  2. Judy F says:

RIght now I think I am coming off a step incline. Hopefully I will feel better soon.

    I just finished. Midnight Lover–Rosemary Laurey(Awesome)
Smart and Sexy by you know who (LOVED IT) and just started Chasing Stanly by Deidre Martin.

  3. Stacy ~ says:

Sometimes I think I’m still standing in line, waiting to get on the ride.

Finished “Dirty” by Megan Hart and now I’ve been re-reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Can’t get enough of it.

  4. Laura says:

I’m finally off the roller coaster. And I’m reading Chloe by Lyn Cote. (I love the shopaholic series, by the way!)

  5. Honey says:

Still roller-coasting away here. More melodrama than I can stand.

I listened to Natural Born Charmer last week and loved it too! Also recently read Seeing Red, which I also loved :bananadance: , and Match Me If You Can.

  6. Amy M says:

I just finished reading Shadow Dance by Julie Garwood, Count to Ten by Karen Rose, and Intimate Danger by Amy J. Fetzer. If you have never read anything by Amy J. Fetzer or Karen Rose, you should take a moment and read their books. They are really good. Right now I am reading Under the Wire by Cindy Gerard. This is the latest book in her Bodyguard series. I’m waiting patiently on Amazon.com to release Smart and Sexy and for my turn to come at the library for Natural Born Charmer (I’m number 12 as of yesterday. Used to be 250). Anyway, I saw some kids selling Girl Scout cookies on the sidewalk this weekend and immediately thought of you. If I lived close, I would have bought you a box!

  7. Carolyn A. says:

Great picture Jill – looks very peaceful!

I just finished “The Great Scot” by Donna Kauffman and I’m now in the middle of “Shiver” by Lisa Jackson. Sometimes her books scare me they are so realistic, but I’m loving this one. The sequel is coming out later this month and I can’t wait.

  8. Laurie says:

I’m definitely on the roller coaster and the “run” button has been taped down! I’m swamped with pending reviews, but the books have been so great that I’m not complaining – have recently read Smart & Sexy (great fun!), The Perfect Stranger by Alison Kent, Skin by Karin Tabke. Up next are Lush by Sasha White and Gennita Low’s Virtually His. I have Natural Born Charmer from the library, but doubt I’m going to be able to read it before my due date arrives.

    Have a terrific week!

  9. Nicole says:

I’m reading an older Victoria Alexander historical and Nora Ephron’s I Feel Bad About My Neck. Just finished up a few books this weekend, though. Tempt Me, Taste Me, Touch Me by Bella Andre, Steelflower by Lilith Saintcrow, and The Chick and the Dead by Casey Daniels. I enjoyed all of them.

  10. Patty L. says:

I have been on the roller coaster so long I think I may have forgotten how to get off. I read Natural Born Charmer and loved it also. If may be one of my favorite by SEP. I am just starting Susan Mallery’s “The Marcelli Princess”. I read the other books in this collection and loved them.

  11. Jill says:

Judy and Honey, so glad you’ve enjoyed my books! Means a lot to hear it.

Amy, thanks for thinking of me when it comes to cookies!!

  12. Susan says:

I’m on the roller coaster and will be for the next two months. As for reading I finished Jinxed!, which I absolutely loved. Now I’m reading Smart and Sexy and all I can say is WOW! This book is going to be front and center on my keeper shelf.

Amy, I love the way Karen Rose writes, too.

  13. Jill says:

Susan, glad you loved Smart And Sexy!

  14. Angie T says:

From last Friday until yesterday (Sunday) I have had a reading marathon week.
I read Natural Born Charmer, two J D Robbs; Innocent In Death and Memory In Death, Lora Leigh’s Dangerous Games (whew! I’m still sweating! :relieved: ), Vivi Anna’s Blood Secrets, Evanovich’s Plum Lovin’, White Lies by JAK and Sophie Kinsella’s Undomestic Goddess. Right now I am reading Jan Kenny’s One Real Cowboy.

I am listening to Harlen Coben’s Deal Breaker in the car to and from work…(I have a 30 mile commute, one way~ 5 days a week.) Oh. My.God. I am loving it!
Why didn’t anyone tell me how good he was????

  15. Jill says:

Angie, I love Harlen’s writing too! Haven’t read Deal Breaker yet, it’s in my pile …

  16. Cryna says:

I have been on the Merry-G0-Round and personally think, I just might prefer the Roller Coaster for a bit. But the silly Merry-Go-Round is not even slowing down for to let me get off…….

As for reading I finished Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind by Karen Kelley which is a terrific read. Have been reading an older series that I have had for awhile. Am anxious to get my copy of Smart and Sexy…………..Loved the picture that you took.

  17. Angie T says:

I don’t know if all of Harlen’s novels are written in this same voice, but I am absolutely in love with Myron Bolitar. He is exactly the kind of sarcastic smart-a** that I adore reading. Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole is like that…(love him , too!) Deal Breaker is the first Myron novel.
Dammit…now I have, like seven more to track down and read!

  18. Fancy says:

Sorry, I didn’t even bother to read your post today because your picture of the lake is so beautiful that it’s enough to warrant a response from me :rotfl: It would be heavenly to have such a place nearby to escape to~ *Ok now, time to read the post*

  19. Christa says:

I am off the roller coaster contemplating bribing the conducter guy with girl scout cookies to stop the ride so that some people can get off.

Reading wise I finished Pamela Britton’s NASCAR themed On the Edge and am now on her 4th book in this series To the Limit.

  20. Ellen says:

Lovely picture. :) Getting off the roller coaster for a breather is a good idea – I should do that too.

I listened to Natural Born Charmer and loved it as well. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve read Pamela Britton’s newest Nascar, plus Victoria Alexander’s and Shana Galen’s newest historicals, and am currently reading Barbara Bretton’s Just Like Heaven.

  21. Tempest Knight says:

My life is such a rollercoaster ride I’m about to puke. As for what I’m reading, gosh, I’m reading the anthology “Hot Spell.” I’ve found Star Wars “Tempest” and “Exile” which are now for reading after I finish the anthology. My TBR pile has like 9 books.

  22. kim h says:

new christina dodd and watching march madness jill, hope you and your husband is enjoying bb ball :bananadance:

  23. Heather Harper says:

    Roller Coaster, definitely.

And I’m reading The Little Black Book Of Tarot. For research.

  24. Heather L says:

Life always seems to be a fast and furious rollercoaster, with little chance to catch my breath – and I HATE coasters. Thankfully, a neck injury now gives me a legitimate and permanent out.

My current read is a slightly older Rebecca York pulled out of the TBR pile, BEYOND CONTROL. Waiting in the wings is Lisa Scottoline’s DIRTY BLONDE. I’ve been waiting one long year for that to come out in PB!

  25. Bailey Stewart says:

Don’t even mention roller coasters, and Tempest? The word puke isn’t allowed either.

Smart and Sexy? Who wrote that?

I haven’t been reading … wet noodle time. 21 books on the TBR pile and a couple on the way.

I wanna see Donner Lake!!!! :hissyfit:

  26. Lis says:

Definitely on the roller coaster.

Reading ‘The Rest Falls Away’ by Colleen Gleason, a really good paranormal.

  27. gena says:

    Hey Jill,

I just finished McKettricks Luck and McKettricks Pride by Linda Lael Miller. I enjoyed both.

  28. Donna M says:

Love the picture. Very pretty & peaceful. Right now I am off the Roller Coaster & enjoying it way to much! There is something to be said for growing older!!
I recently read Sex, Lies & Cellulite by Renee Roszel, currently I am reading Anything You Can Do… & Having It All by Roz Denny Fox. The two books were released together under the title Coffee in the Morning. Also recently read A Scent of Seduction by Colleen Collins, HOT & sexy, & the three Hot books by Carly Phillips, all were good reading. Since I’ve already read Smart & Sexy I guess I won’t have a new Jill read until Shadow Hawk comes out.

  29. Dru says:

I’m off the roller coaster now.

I just finished Web of Evil by J.A. Jance, A Crazy Little Thing Called Death by Nancy Martin, The Vision by Heather Graham and I’m reading Never Fear by Scott Frost right now. The next book that just arrived from B&N is Smart and Sexy by hmmm…Jill Shalvis.

  30. catslady says:

I’m reading Vanished by Jodi Picoult – one of my new favorite authors. With a 20 yr. old and 23 yr. old just engaged, definitely on a roller coaster.

  31. Lyssan says:

    Hey :hyper:

Finished reading Last Chance Cafe by Linda Lael Miller, Undead and Unapreciated by Maryjanice Davidson (Besty Rocks!!) and The Stranger I Married by Sylvia Day, in the middle of Count to Ten By Karen Rose, Food and Wine Magazine for my college class and I want to read Smart and Sexy plus all of Lori Foster’s coming out soon.

  32. Brandy says:

In the past 24 hours I have read Love, Lust and Pixe Dust by LuAnn McLane, The Very Verile Viking by Sandra Hill and A Secret Life by Barbara Dunlop. (I had trouble sleeping.) Your photo makes me miss Northern California!

  33. Diana says:

I’m not sure if I’m on or off the roller coaster. I had trouble sleeping again last night (two Sundays in a row), so I hope and wish a good night’s rest is in my near future (like tonight).

I’m currently reading Kristin Hardy’s Cutting Loose. I’ve never read any books by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, but have heard good things about her, so last night I ordered the six books in her Chicago Stars/Bonner Brothers series. I can’t wait to check them out.

  34. Jill says:

Some great books listed! Diana, you’re going to love SEP.

  35. raine says:

I’m on the rollercoaster, but it’s flatlined, and the mechanics don’t quite know what the problem is. :wall:

    Beautiful photo, Jill.

  36. Lishy says:

My roller coaster is set to stun right now, I think…

Currently re-reading Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett, and waiting for the shops to open later today so I can get For A Few Demons More by Kim Harrison…

  37. Celise says:

I’m still on it. And will continue to be so until I finally get The Call. I’m in the midst of an agent search and it seems like my life has narrowed down to looking thru the mail (for the SASE…and the inevitable rejection) or checking emails (for yet another rejection). I’m trying to shop my YA series and I know I should continue writing Book Two, but I need to get an opinion of a critique group because now I don’t where to go. It’s like I painted myself into a corner too quickly or something.

And I’m reading Wendy Etherington’s “A Breath Away.” It’s a Harlequin Blaze. Did I mention that I should be writing?…
