High School Reunion

March 15, 2007 | Filed under: Stuff

Last night was Back to School night for the High School. It’s set up so that parents can experience the day as their child does. My daughter handed me my schedule. AP Calculus, AP Science, Weight Training, Leadership, and AP English. I looked at the schedule and felt the nerves jump in the pit of my stomach. “I already survived high school, I shouldn’t have to survive it again.”

“Avoid the upstairs hallway, that’s where the mean kids hang out.”

“But you have two classes up there.”

“And don’t wear those sweats. People will make fun of you.”

“But I over ate this week and my jeans are too tight.”

“And don’t tell my English teach you write romance. She snubs her nose at all things not literary.”

I stared at the schedule, feeling more sick to my stomach than I had since . . . since having to go to high school the first time!!! “I don’t want to do this.”

“Welcome to my world, mom.”

Update:
I survived, and stopped to buy Girl Scout cookies on the way home, so all was not lost …

I hope you did tell that teacher what you do for a living; you are a published author – that’s something to be proud of! I woulda never made it through that calculus class, btw.

Anyway, I’m glad you survived and that Girl Scout cookies saved the day.

  2. Elizabeth K says:

We have something similar to this during open house in the fall. I think it’s stupid. You run around from class to class while thinking, “I gave up my TV/reading/writing time for this?”

My bet is that her English teacher wants students to have a strong classical foundation–but has a stack of romances and other “non-literary” stuff a mile high on her bedside.

  3. Bailey Stewart says:

I hated high school, and just thinking about it makes me have a panic attack. Good girl – you survived. So, did you buy thin mints?

  4. Devon Ellington says:

Can I tell you how hard it is to buy Girl Scout cookies around here? Lucky you. But I’m sorry you had to actually go through it all. Ick. Once is all for me.

  5. Fannie says:

Poor Jill :guitar: That sounds like a breeze to me. While I was visiting my daughter and grandsons these past 3 weeks, I had the pleasure of having lunch with my 6 & 7 year olds. Have you ever tried to get your arthritic knees to bend enough to sit in those little chairs? Little means an awful lot of your overweight butt is hanging over each side and you wonder why you had that donut with your coffee this morning. You vow that before next year there will be a lot less overhang. Now just try to follow thru with that when said daughter has homemade Pina Coloda muffins made when you get home. :fryingpan: I have missed reading all your great posts and all the comments the wonderful readers leave. I am glad to be home. Hugs to all.

  6. Carolyn A. says:

Good for you Jill. That’s awful to have to survive high school twice – it should be outlawed. Once is tough enough.
    Way to go!

  7. Ellen says:

Kids should be able to skip HS and go directly onto college — your daughter probably could, as she must be very bright with all those AP classes. Glad you survived and that you got a few cookies out of the deal.

P.S. Some of my Lit professors, who seemed quite snobbish, were writing romance on the sly.

  8. Alice Audrey says:

So were the kids in the upper hall mean?

    Alice

  9. RobynL says:

Was it an enjoyable day after all? To obtain those cookies made the day seem good I’m sure.

  10. Marcy says:

You should have just flashed your daughter your HS diploma and said, “Been there, done that!” :rotfl:

  11. Cryna says:

I think you deserved the cookies after having to survive high school again……….I got through it once and would not have to do it again……….just thought gives me a tight feeling in my stomach.

  12. Dru says:

What a perfect end to the day…Girl Scout Cookies

  13. Donna M says:

I thought High School was fun–doesn’t mean I want to do it again!! Thank heavens I don’t have to face that. My oldest daughter took all the advanced math classes & is a real brain, I couldn’t pass any of her classes! She has a degree in chemistry & this fall is going for a degree as a CPA, like I said she is a brain. My other daughter is a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) & I couldn’t do what she does either! She loves working with the patients & treats them well. Just call me Proud Mama!!
Glad that the evening ended with cookies. The English teacher should be proud to have a published author in her community.

  14. Lis says:

I’m with Bailey, went once, got the t-shirt. Couldn’t pay me enough to step inside a hs again  At least you got cookies :bananadance:

  15. Karen says:

Ah, high school. Yikes. Don’t really want to relive that experience! Glad you got some girl scout cookies to ease your pain. :bananadance:

  16. Brandy says:

Ack! High School. Hated it, I wouldn’t go back for anything. My literature teacher hated to let you have an oigianl thought on anything we read. If you disagreed with her, you pretty much could kiss an A goodbye. So, no, I hated HS!

  17. Patty L. says:

:rotfl: So cute. I would hate to go back to high school. Had fun the first time, but would not like to repeat it.

  18. Judy F says:

Thank god for Girl Scout cookies. You poor thing, I remember my sister having to do this for her girls. She said the same thing once was enough. LOL

You couldn’t pay me to go back to high school. I remember when my niece Meg started at the local all girl high school. SHe hated it. Said it was cliquish (sp). SHocking. All girls being in a clique. LOL

(judy f who survived an all girl highschool)

  19. catslady says:

My daughters’ school did something like that too – I liked finding out what type of teachers they had (so when they came home and blamed it on them I had some insight as to it being true or not lol) and it helped me put a face to a name. When people talk about people who I’ve never met I can never keep them straight.

  20. ButterflyLane says:

And I thought “Meet the Teachers Night” at my kids’ elementary was bad. Now y’all have me terrified and my oldest is only a third grader.

  21. dianaschnuth says:

LOL Jill. Sounds like your daughter’s got one heck of a tough schedule! Great idea though. I wonder if our parents would do it.
