The One Where I Marvel . . .

Why do I write? Is it because I don’t want to fling hambers? Or ask if you’d rather have red or green sauce with that burrito? Is it because I am tired of doing accounting and am too lazy to find another job? Maybe. But the truth is, I just love love love making up stories. Always have. There’s just something incredibly wonderful and exciting about having a daydream, and then being able to put it to paper. I’ve had many jobs; scooping poop for a pet clinic, putting wires on teeth for an orthodontist, filing for an ambulance service . . . and many more odd things I did to put food on the table. But none have given me the satisfaction and fun and excitement that writing has. I get to wake up, slip into my bunny slippers and MAKE STUFF UP for a living. Can’t think of anything better than that, I really can’t.
This morning when I got the Rita finalist call, it was so early, and I was rushing around like mad as we do every morning, catching kids, making lunches, breakfasts, finding a sock for the track meet, locating missing keys, you know how it goes. When the phone rang, I was just plain annoyed. I told my husband DON’T MAKE ME GET THAT. So he answered, prepared to yield the call and then he hands me the phone. I gave him the evil eye and he looked at me really funny and said YOU’RE GOING TO WANT THIS ONE, I PROMISE. LOL. I really hate it when he’s right.
Then I hear the words that I was nominated for best single title for 2004 with Blue Flame. Ironic really, as this was the first book I’ve ever written that when I finished, I couldn’t let go. I just couldn’t get the characters out of my head. It took weeks. It was like I had to kill them off and mourn them, LOL. So now to be nominated with that book feels amazing. And then to find out who I’m nominated with, people I’ve read and loved and adored for years… Talk about a surreal experience.
No doubt, I have the best job in the entire world.

Hey Jill,
Posted on March 25th, 2005 at 7:30 pmIt’s great to be paid for doing something you enjoy. Also, to bring joy to others…
I thought the same thing about you being nominated.
It would be awesome to win, but what an honor (rightfully so) to even be nominated.
Congratulations

Jill, I think it’s great that you’ve tried all these different jobs and now have what you feel is the greatest job. I cannot imagine working and not liking what I do. So much time is spent working that it’s just plain depressing if you’re not happy. And I must say, you do such a tremendous job making up stories! Did you ever imagine that you would someday get paid to make things up?!?!? I’m happy for you that you love your job. I’m also happy for me that you love your job
:hehe:

Fabulous post! We’re so happy you love your job and that you keep doing it (extremely well, I might add). Congrats, again, on the RITA nomination. I can certainly see why Blue Flame was nonimated…it has all the elements of an unforgettable book.

Congratulations, Jill! Really pleased for you. And so you should be nominated – since I first discovered your books about 18 months ago, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them. Good pace, FABULOUS dialogue, warm characters – and they put a smile on my face. (You’re in the same bracket for me as Liz Fielding, for the same reasons!)
