The One Where I Screw Everything Up …

March 24, 2005 | Filed under: Uncategorized

I’m writing this from my neighbor’s computer. Why? I’ve managed to have one of those days. The book took a turn off my planned map and I have no idea where I’m going but I’m pretty sure I’ve left planet Earth. My box from SBC arrived, with a cute little poster announcing how easy DSL installation was. Uh huh. It also said all “easy” steps could be completed within sixty minutes. LIES, people. All lies. It’s been four hours and I’ve managed to screw up not one but TWO computers. I’ve never needed chocolate in a worse way. Helluva time to decide I’m fat and throw it all out.

My husband called, asked me how it was going. GREAT, I said, feeling a bit like I Love Lucy. (Don’t feel sorry for him, he’s used to it) It’s just that I don’t want to admit how badly I’ve messed up my computer (and his, thank you very much). Not yet anyway, as I’m sure I have lots of more screwing up to accomplish today. All I know is that the stupid ethernet and the stupid airport extreme and the stupid something-filter and the stupid cords are DRIVING ME INSANE and if things don’t straighten out, I’m chucking my computer out the window.

It’s a twenty foot drop.

Who told me this was easy??? Whoever that was owes me a drink. Make it TWO.

All right. Deep breath. I’m going back in, wish me luck …

  1. Nicole says:

Okay, did you put the filters on every phone jack but the one you need for the computer? Ermm…that’s all I remember. lol That’s what my husband is for.

  2. Lydia says:

I love my cable connection. *gggg* Load time? We don’t have no stinkin’ load time! Once you ge it working, you’ll love high speed, too.

  3. Jennifer says:

Hope your day gets better. I would offer to help but I’m a techno-moron.

  4. Jill says:

Well the filter is a problem on our main phone because it’s a two line phone and the filter is a one line filter. Or something equally Latin.

Lydia, at this point, LOL, as my computer is going OUT THE WINDOW, I will not be enjoying high speed internet connections.

Jennifer thanks for the well wishes but I’m afraid it’s too late for this day to get any better.

Gee, am I being the over dramatic writer much, LOL?

  5. Michelle says:

    Hang in there, Jill!

You can always call for help. :P

  6. Jill says:

Okay damn it, I’ve killed my husband’s computer. Instead of just admitting it, I’ve called a computer geek friend. He is coming over right now and will hopefully save my marriage. Yes, i should have called him first but I wanted to do this On My Own, LOL. That’ll teach me.

  7. Sue says:

Jill I hope everything turn out fine by now :D

  8. Beth K. says:

I feel your pain. I get po’d when the computer acts up cause if it’s more than restarting it, I can’t figure it out. My hubby’s pretty handy with computer stuff but when I get into a real jam I call in a favor from my computer whiz of a little bro.

  9. Judy says:

Jill may the force be with you… Hugs

  10. Nicole says:

    Good luck.

On another front, I blame you for my maiming today. :-) Those metal thingies on my White Heat envelope can make a mean cut. :-)
Okay, I really don’t blame you, but it still hurts. *g*

    oh…THANKS for the book!

  11. Loretta says:

    Hang in there Jill…
As soon as you get it going right you will be soooo loving it.

    it’s the best!

  12. Amy says:

Hope you’re still married and that someone rescued your computer! My sympathies…I do NOT do computers!

  13. Jill says:

Nicole, OUCH! But glad you got the book.

TEN hours later I think I’ve got the computer handled but not sure yet …

  14. Melissa says:

Every day I want to throw my computer out the window. Good luck Jill.

  15. Suzanne says:

Good luck! It’ll all be worth it in the end to be off dial-up!

  16. Sue says:

Jill did you get it going?
    hope so
    hugs to you

  17. Kate Hardy says:

Jill, hope you got the computer sorted. Am sure DH will forgive you (my tip there is to share your chocolate stash – that usually stops mine yelling). You were brave to go it alone, though – I think I would’ve called my tecchy pals right from the start!

  18. Margery says:

I can relate. Been there, done that. Hugs.

  19. Sela says:

*shudder* This whole conversation is making me cringe. I fried 2 CPUs last month. Dh finally just had to order a new one until he gets home to fix the others.

  20. Mary says:

Been there. Don’t want to go back. Good luck. You’ll love it after.

  21. Jill says:

Well I’m still married :P , so that’s something. Now I’m attempting to update outdated software. Shesh. I thought writing was hard. I’ve changed my mind. Computer shit is HARD.

  22. Donna M says:

Jill, I can turn the computer on!! My tech knowledge would fit in a small, very small, thimble!! My internet provider has been very helpful & I appreciate them!! Glad you are still married. Somehow I missed reading your blog yesterday. I already read the Friday one so maybe that makes up for terrible Thursday!! :O
